The Forbidden Attic, chapter 2
*Out of Cassie's POV*
"Hello, class. I'm Miss Crowder. I'll be your homeroom teacher for this year. Now I want us to get to know each other better. How about we introduce and give a few facts about ourselves?" Miss Crowder smiled as she saw the usual 12th grade outfits of white t-shirts and argyle or plaid cotton vests. The girls had pleated skirts and long white socks with black Mary Janes. The guys wore knee-length shorts and Dock Martens. Although there was one student who stood out, and Miss Crowder frowned. The girl had shaggily layered black hair that fell just past her shoulders but was now up in a ponytail. she had bright green eyes bordered with heavy black eyeliner. She had on a black long-sleeved shirt and a layered hot pink tulle skirt. On her feet were black chunky boots with uncountable zippers, chains, and buckles.
*Cassie's POV*
Miss Crowder looked down at her role call. "Cassie Leighton, how about you start us off?" I shot her a death stare before pushing myself up.
"I"m Cassie Leighton, as you all just heard. A few facts? My parents died in a car crash and I just moved into the house on the corner of Pleasant Hill Drive." I looked Miss Crowder in the eye. "Good enough for ya?" Miss Crowder nodded, in shock of my response, and I sat down. I peered around and saw everyone staring at me. "What?"
"So you're the girl who lives in that house?" The guy sitting in the desk next to me asked.
"No wonder," I heard one of the popular girls snicker. "she looks just like it: manically depressed and in need of a makeover." I just rolled my eyes.
Miss Crowder smiled and looked around the room. "Alright. Who wants to go next?"
There was one other punk in the whole school. And it took me up until lunch to find him. He was sitting at a deserted table. I sat in the chair next to him and set down my lunch. He looked over at me with a shocked expression.
"Why are you so shocked? Don't see poeple like us often? Or people don't sit with you much?" I picked up my sloppy joe and took a bite.
"Both." He said simply after he swallowed. I nodded in agreement. He stuck out his hand and added,"I'm Jay Scholtens."
"Cassie Leighton." I said and shook his hand.
"You're the girl who lives with Miss Wilson!" I nodded. I looked around at all the other kids.
"Think we stand out?" Jay smirked and nodded. I looked at his plate and noticed Jay didn't have a sloppy joe. "You a vegetarian or somethin'?" I nodded at his plate.
"Uhh...yeah, I am." I was actually kind of surprised. Jay smiled and asked,
"Can I see your schedule?"
"Excuse me?" It was automatic. I didn't really mean to snap. I regretted it when he looked away shyly.
"Your class schedule. I just wondered if we had and classes together." I shrugged and handed him a folded piece of paper that was my schedule. Jay studied it for a moment and handed it back to me. "We have the rest of our classes together." I raised my eyebrows and whistled.
The ride home wasn't much fun. "Are you two dating? You hang out around each other too much." Sharon Buckley, the popular girl from earlier, asked. Jay seemed shocked she would ask such a question.
"Who are you to tell us when we can hang out? We're just friends. Although you don't know what one is, seeing as you have no real friends." I spat back. Sharon looked startled someone would challenge her. She just sat down and blinked stupidly.
