Take It All Away (sequel to Numb the Pain), chapter 1
*2006, PRESENT DAY*
*NEW YORK*
*Andrea's POV*
I sighed as I picked up my 3 year old daughter Nickole. I call her Nicki. "Mommy! I'm hungry!" She said, very loudly, in my ear. I shook my head.
"I know Nikki. Let's go down town and meet Aunt Tyler there. Okay?" I said, pushing my black hair over my shoulder. Tyler Drake is my best friend. I met Tyler when I first moved here to New York after me and Mike broke up. Everyone thinks Tyler is a guy, but she's not. Her parents where told she was gonna be a boy, but she was girl, so they kept the name Tyler.
If you don't know me, my name is Andrea Gregory and I'm 32 years old. Back in 2002, I was dating a guy named Mike Pritchard, more famously known as Mike Dirnt. I had accidently kissed his best friend Frank Wright, more famously known as Tre Cool, and he broke up with me, so I moved to New York. On the plane ride here, I met my future husband, Sean Gregory. We started going out, we got married in 1999, and I found out I was pregnant in late 2000. I was about 7 and a half months along when Sean left me saying he couldn't deal with the pressures of being a father. Then I had Nicki a month and a half later. I decided not to change my last name back to Johnson, for my daughter's sake. After that happened, I moved on and became a single mother. About 2003, I met this guy named Tony Hartman. He doesn't know about my past, but he does know I have a daughter. Tyler was the only one I could really talk to and she's the only one who understands me. She's the only one here in New York who knows about my past, George, and Mike, which she still can't believe that I dated 'The Mike Dirnt'. After I had left and met Sean, I went to college and got a degree in English and business. I work for the New York Times magazine company and I'm the editor for it. I have made a pretty good life for me and Nicki and a pretty good living, if I do say so myself. My thoughts where broken when I heard a familiar voice come over the radio. 'I walk these empty streets, on the boulevard of broken dreams. Where the city sleeps, and it's home to me and I walk alone.' I turned off the radio fast. I've heard the song millions of times before, one time not hearing it ain't gonna hurt. I had never kept my promise and called Adie when I landed. We never kept in touch. I haven't seen or heard from any of them for 13 years. I have a house on Long Island, the expensive part. I mean, seriously, my house cost $300, 000.
I bundled up Nicki against the bitter New York weather. It was April and it's only 30 degrees out there.
I put on her small blue coat over the small Operation Ivy shirt I had made for her and she also had blue jeans and mini baby blue converse. I set her down on the couch while I pulled on my heavy leather jacket over my black work pants and black blazer and black work shirt. I put on my gloves and picked Nicki back up. "Alright. Let's go meet Tyler. "We went outside to my black BMW and pulled out of the drive way.
I shook my head, getting the thoughts out. I pulled into the already crowded parking lot of our favorite diner 'Long Island Diner'. Original, I know.
Anyway, I saw Tyler getting out of her Corvette (yes, she lives right near me) next to the door. "Hey Andie." She said, waving. She calls me Andie and is the only one on the face of the earth who can get away with it too.
"Hey Ty." I said, using the nickname only I can use. Nicki shimmied down from my arms and ran across to Tyler. "Hey! No running!" I said, following after my 3 year old. Tyler caught her and lifted her on her hip.
"Aunt Tywer!" Nicki lisped.
"Hi honey!" Tyler said, kissing her soundly on the head. Nicki giggled.
"I'm hungry." Nicki said again. I laughed.
"You are so persistent. Come on. Let's go." I said, pulling on Tyler. Nicki jumped down again and ran for the door. She couldn't get it open and turned around.
"Mommy." She said, pointing at the door. I shook my head, still laughing, and pulled the door open for Tyler and my daughter. I felt warm air on my face and neck as soon as I stepped into the diner. I sighed and pulled off my gloves and coat and threw them into the booth that Nicki had run too. I slid in and threw my long black hair behind my back again. I un-zipped Nicki's jacket and put it in the seat beside us. I grabbed for a menu and found none there. I told Tyler and Nicki I was gonna go get us some.
I got up and smoothed down my skirt. I really hated wearing these clothes. But I couldn't go to work in ripped jeans and a band tee, which is what I really wanted to wear. I walked up to the counter. "Hey Jeff. Do you have any more menus?" I asked the guy behind the counter. I noticed a guy on my left look at me when I started talking, but I ignored him.
"Um-" He said, looking around. "Let me go check in the back Andrea." He said, sliding behind the swinging door that led to the kitchen. I leaned against the counter and sighed. I ran my hand through my hair, pulling at it. It's always a habit that I could never really get over.
"Andie!" I turned around at Tyler's voice.
"What?"
"Menu's!" She said, pointing at her stomach. "I need to be fed."
"Hold on! Jeff's looking in the kitchen!" I said, turning back around, clicking my heels on the hard tiled floor.
"Andrea?" I heard a voice say from beside me. It took me a second to reconize the voice, the one I haven't heard since 1992.
I turned to my left to see a pair of astonished blue eyes looking back at me. "Mike?" I shook my head. "Wha-what are you doing here?" I said, unable to keep the stutter from my voice.
"Concert." Was all he said.
"Here Andrea. Last menus. Feel lucky." Jeff said, handing me the menus. I did a fake smile.
"Thanks Jeff." I muttered, looking at the ground and grabbing the menus. God, it's been a long time since I've done that. Looked at the ground when I talked to someone.
"No problemo. Happy to help." He said, turning to another customer. I turned back to see Mike still looking at me. God, he was still so hott. His brown hair now had the ends dipped in blonde, and his blue eyes where still the bright blue they where 13 years ago. And he still had that tall lanky body that he had when he was 20.
"So, uh." He stuttered too.
I was gonna say something, but Nicki yelled my name. "Mommy!" I turned to the sound of her voice.
"Yes dear?" I said, blinking at the suddenly bright light.
"I'm hungry!" She said, pointing to the menus. I sighed.
"I know. Hold on please Nicki." She pouted and slumped against the booth. I turned back to Mike. His eyes where wide. "What?"
"Mommy? You have a daughter?" He asked, not really believing that it was true. I nodded.
"Well, so do you. So don't give me that." I said, looking at my feet.
He cleared his throat, making me look up. "Fair enough. So, uh. Your married." He said with a weird look in his eye. I used to be able to tell what he was thinking. But the time we spent apart made me lose that ability.
"No. I was. He left when I was still pregnant with Nicki." I said, looking at my feet again at the pain from that memory.
"Oh. Sorry." He said, although he really didn't sound it, making me know he was way over me.
"Naw. It's okay. I still haven't changed my name back, for her sake." I said, nodding in Nicki's direction.
"It's not Johnson anymore?"
"No. It's Gregory." I said.
He was about to answer but Tyler yelled again.
"Come on Andie! We're all hungry! Quit flirting and give us the menus!" She yelled. I winced and glanced up at Mike, who blushed.
"Hold on." I muttered. I stalked over to the table. "God, you're embarrassing Tyler."
"Oh Andie. You know I live for it." She said, smiling taking the menu. I gave another one to Nicki. She grabbed it and pointed to the shrimp basket.
"I want that." She said. I laughed.
"Shrimp honey?" I said.
She wriggled her nose. "Ew no. I want grilled cheese with no crust." I nodded.
"I want the big breakfast. I'm starved." Tyler said, throwing the menu at me. I nodded.
"Okay. I'll go order." I said. I slowly walked back over next to Mike. I smiled softly as Jeff came over, saving me another minute.
"What'll be hun?" He asked, grabbing his pad and a pen.
"Nicki wants grilled cheese with no crust. One order please. She's only 3 and Tyler wants the big breakfast, not too much sugar. I have to work with her all day after all." I said, handing him the menu.
"And for you?"
I shook my head. "Not hungry." Well, at least not anymore.
"Sure. You gotta be a little hungry. You got no fat on ya, gotta be a little hungry." He said with a laugh. I laughed half heartily.
"But I'm not Jeff." I said.
"Fine. I'll just get Tony to make ya eat." I rolled my eyes.
"Fine fine fine. I'll have what Nicki's having." I said. Handing over $20.
"Thank you."
I sighed as he walked away to give the order to the chef, Peter.
"Who's Tony?" I heard Mike's voice say from behind me. I turned and he looked surprised that he said it.
"Tony's my boyfriend. We've been dating for 3 years." I said. His face fell and it was his turn to look at his shoes.
"Oh. I see. Well, I better go meet Tre and Billie. See ya around." He said, sliding off the stool. My mind churned and I didn't answer him. He pulled on a jacket and walked out the door. Before I knew what I was doing, I ran out the door after him into the bitter cold.
"Mike wait!" I yelled over the rushing winds of New York. I wrapped my arms around myself, trying to fend off the cold. He stopped and spun around.
"Go back inside. It's cold." He said, then turned around again and started towards his car again.
"No. Just wait." I said, running after him. I heard him sigh as he turned again.
"What Andrea? You left 13 years ago without a trace, never calling me again or any one ever again, then all of a sudden, I see you in New York, the place you told me you where going, and you want me to just forget everything that went on and forgive you and talk to you? No, I can't do that." He said, shivering.
I sighed. "All I wanna do is talk Mike. I never said you had to forgive me." He looked into my eyes and sighed.
"Fine. That's all. Nothing more." He said.
"I know."
"Okay. How about dinner here tomorrow?"
"Why not tonight?"
"I have a concert."
"Oh. Right. Yeah. I'll have Tyler watch Nicki."
He nodded. "Right. 7 okay?"
"Fine. I just live 10 minutes away."
"You live on Long Island?" He asked like he couldn't believe it. I nodded.
"Yeah." I said like it was obvious.
"Oh." He said, surprised. "Just meet me here tomorrow and we'll talk." I nodded.
"Yeah talk." He nodded and got in his car and drove off.
*Mike's POV*
I sighed and turned on the heat as I pulled onto the highway on my way to Manhattan. I couldn't believe that I saw her. Andrea. And she looked better than ever. Her long black hair was still shiny and bouncy. Her bluish green eyes could still penetrate into my soul and pick out all my thoughts and feelings. And the curvy, shapely body was even more curvy than it was in 1992. The only think that has changed is her attitude. She had a better outlook on life and a better handle on it now that she's here on her own and she has a daughter. God, that's kinda hard to believe. There was a time that I thought we'd be together forever and we'd be having kids together, not with different people and at different times. Her daughter, Nicki I think she said her name was, is so adorable. She looks exactly like Andrea with long wavy black hair and bright green eyes.
I turned off the exit and got on the stretch of road that led to Manhattan where our hotel was. I looked up at my visor and saw the bunch of pictures I pinned up there. The one of Stella and me when she was born and one of her now. Then, the one I keep hidden under the flap of the mirror. The picture of me and Andrea when we went to the beach one time when she was 19 and I was 20. I remember that day like it was yesterday.
*FLASHBACK*
"Ah! Tre! Don't splash me!" Andrea sputtered and then giggled. I laughed and ran after her as she ran away from Tre.
"You got me wet first. Get your ass back here girl!" He yelled. Adie and Billie where laughing at the scene before them. I stopped and got an evil look on my face. Billie was still watching Tre run after Andrea, but Adie stopped laughing.
"What are you gonna do?" She asked defensively. My smile widened.
"Get Billie." I mouthed. She smirked again and nodded.
I went over to the bucket Andrea used to dump on Tre and filled it with the salty ocean water. I sneaked behind a sand dune and came up behind Billie, who was still laughing. Then, I dumped it on him. He sputtered and blinked a couple of times. Adie fell backwards laughing and Tre stopped chasing Andrea and started laughing at Billie. I was laughing so hard I had to lean against the sand dune in order to stay up right. Billie turned to me.
"I'm gonna fucking kill you." He said, jumping up. My laughs quieted as I raced over the sand and onto the ocean to get away from him. I heard his feet pounding in the sand, getting closer and closer to me. I looked behind me to see where he was. He was gaining, so I ran faster. Just as I was about to turn back around, I felt me run into something and the wind get knocked out of me. I fell into the water face first with what ever I hit under me. I opened my eyes and saw Andrea.
"Oh shit! Andrea! I'm so sorry!" I said. All she did was laugh.
"It's okay. I'm fine." She said, stroking the side of my cheek.
"Good." I said, kissing her nose. She giggled and looked up at me. I kissed her tenderly and felt her arms go around my neck and pull me a little closer.
I broke away for a minute. "You love me right?" I said, wiping at her hair that lay across her forehead. She nodded and tightened her grip.
"I do love you. And we'll be together forever. I promise."
"Good. Cause that's how I want it to be." I muttered as her lips pressed into mine again.
*END FLASHBACK*
I sighed at the happy memory, wishing that her promise could have been a reality. But, we both broke it. And it couldn't be fixed.
I glanced at the final picture. Shit! I thought. I pulled the last picture down of me and Brittney, my girlfriend. I can't believe I had forgotten about her. I loved her. How could I forget? The same way I forgot about Andrea. But, did I really forget?
I pulled into the hotel that me and the guys where staying at and I sighed.
Tomorrow is gonna be a long day.
