2028, chapter 14

Things in Green Day Land went amazingly good. They wrote songs, trashed songs, and fixed old mistakes on old songs. They toyed with the idea of going on tour, of getting a reality show (as a joke), of recording a new album, of going the seriously underground route. In the end, due to an offer by Jakob, who also liked to produce things, they decided to go the album way, on their ever wonderful label, Reprise Records (who the band that Jakob managed was on) and see what happened from there. For all of the boys, this was interesting since the recording went better than anything they had ever done. The songs were better than ever and it t seemed that everything was just coming together, getting better with age. The new album, so far untitled, was personal, gripping and better than anything else they had ever done. As they searched for names, they passed many by; Have Fear was discarded along with We Rock More Than You Do, Tre's Humps, and Happy Apocalypse. They sat in a studio one day, looking at the songs and thinking about a name for the CD as they were supposed to have one before lunch and Tre was hungry but Jakob had locked them in the room and they were stuck until they admitted to his demands.
"How 'bout calling it 'Decadence'?" Tre asked, "I mean it's one of the songs so... "
"Decadence is okay but it sounds like a crappy pop album," Billie complained, "Think guys, think!"
"How about we call it 'Our Drummer Tre Rocks More Than Yours Does'!"
"Or we could call it 'Our Drummer Tre is Full of Himself'," Billie shot back.
"You've been in me too," Tre grinned mischeviously.
Mike had been quiet through this whole thing but he finally spoke, "I think we should call it 'Eight Years'."
"I like that but can I add?" Billie asked.
"Sure," Mike said.
"How about '2028' instead? We released one called '2020' and we broke up in that year, if we release one called '2028', it was the year we got back together."
"I like it," Tre smiled as Mike nodded.

And that was the name.

On December 27, 2029, '2028' was released, nearly a year and a half after Katie had begun her quest to reunite the band. It's first single, 'Coming Around' (named for that single so, so long ago), had been released a month or so ago, and things were heating up faster than usual. It became a huge phenomenon and the boys were thrust into major stardom again, so much in fact they paid a call to Jason White, Jason Freese and Ronny Blake to see if they could get a good lineup in the band for their upcoming tour again. But the most surprising thing to Billie Joe, was when the Grammy nominations came out and he saw how much he had really done. They were nominated for Best Rock Album, Album of the Year, Record of the Year and many, many more. Oddly enough, they won all three of the above.
"Wow," Billie Joe said during an interview, "We never thought this would get much attention. We never actually decided to reunite, it was decided for us by some events that happened last year, mainly some medical drama-"
"Dun-dun-DUH!" Tre interrupted.
"-and my son and his family moving back. It was mainly my granddaughter, Katie who decided we should reunite, and so she went around trying to get it to work. She gets all the credit, she's the heroine of '2028', there's a song about her but you didn't hear me say that since she'll get as big of a head as her father."

For Katie, the heroine of this story as Billie Joe mentioned in the last chapter, the best part of the entire thing was going to Green Day shows every night for about a year. She was there when Billie Joe brought kids up to play Knowledge for the first time in years, there when Mike fell over himself onstage and ended up doing an impromptu stage dive and there when Tre burned his drums and threw the remaining cymbals and hardware into the crowd.
"I wanna bring out someone real special tonight. We wouldn't all be here if it wasn't for her and her perseverance, effort and well... all that shit. She's a beauty, a wonder and a relation and her name? Why it's KATIE ARMSTRONG!"

Backstage Katie's eyes got real big and she slowly, stiffly walked out to Billie and gave him a look telling him 'WHAT THE HELL?' basically.
"You look just like your father," he laughed and began to explain the entire story to all the people. As Katie stood on stage, her eyes big and insane-looking, she realized she had done it. As she watched the cheering girls in the crowd, she saw everything that she had worked almost two years ago had worked. She had worked hard and things had paid off, and as far as she was concerned, things were more amazing than ever and well, everything was amazing, almost to good to be true. But for the meantime, she would enjoy the show, enjoy life and hope it went smoothly from there. She had to admit it, she had done something no other fourteen-year-old had ever done; she had reached her goal, she, Katie Armstrong, had reunited Green Day.
"That's Katie for ya!" Billie yelled and Katie looked toward the crowd, her eyes lighting up, looking towards the future, towards the good times that lie ahead for her and for her family.
