Rachina, Green Day And I, chapter 22
***AT WORK***
Oh my god. What a long day!!! This was my first job since I was 15, and it sucked. Picky customers, children throwing tantrums, and mushy couples playing tonsil tennis completely neglecting their food were probably the worst parts of this job. I heard that in a week, this place would be attempting the world record for biggest steak. Luckily, I would be working that day. I really wanted to see how big the steak would be! I also heard there would be lots of reporters around. I was sweeping the floor, checked my watch, and saw my shift ended in 1 minute. 60 seconds didn’t matter much to me, so I just left.
When I got home, Rachel and Corinne were in MY room, laughing about something. I ran down the hall, and slammed open the door to find them both reading my secret diary from 7th grade.
“Oh my god you guys!! I said, snatching it back.
“Jeez, you were a Green Day nut back then too! Corinne said, laughing.
“Yea, and you were in love with…SAMUEL!!!! oh shit. They read that part.
“Seriously? I didn’t get to that part! Corinne said. Samuel was the guy in our grade with dyed black hair, a pierced ear, and he loved punk rock like me, except he never noticed me. He only went for girls in the popular group at school, which I was so not a part of. I didn’t fit their criteria. I walked over to my desk, and placed my diary back where it came from.
“Come on you guys! What do you want to do besides invade my privacy? I asked.
“I dunno. It’s not my house you guys! Corinne said, reasoning why she was too lazy to think of anything entertaining.
“Ok, how about we do nothing? Rachel said, falling back onto the ground.
“Loud music anyone? I said, walking towards the CD player, and switching it on. My International Superhits album was playing, just at normal volume; not loud enough. I turned it up really loud, and maxed out the bass. Good, good. I joined Corinne and Rachel on the floor and rested my head on a pillow. The doorbell went. You could still hear it over the music! I turned it down a little, while Corinne and Rachel went to answer the door. I followed. It was Dave. Corinne went to hug him, while Rachel stood aside, and I just glared at him, fists clenched and gritting my teeth in hatred. I hated Dave! The song ‘Haha you’re dead’ sprung into my head. Yes, I would play it at his funeral. A sick, twisted, evil grin came onto my face just picturing him dangling off a cliff begging for my help, then falling, falling far to his death. I snapped back to reality.
“Hey sexy! he said to Corinne, hugging her. “I missed you! yea, like he meant it. He walked over to Rachel, and hugged her.
“Hey sweetie. He said. He then walked over to me. Stood about a metre away, and said
“Hi. That was all, nothing more. I could tell he hated me too, which was fine by me. Rachel and Corinne went into the kitchen, but I didn’t follow. I went back to my room and turned up my music again, trying to space out and escape the real world. I don’t know how long I was staring into space, all I know was that I harshly brought back to reality by Rachel lightly slapping my face.
“Hey, can you turn it down? Dave is complaining. Rachel said.
“Well DUH!! That’s the whole point. If he has to be in MY house, he should put up with MY ways. If he won’t tell him to piss off to whatever hell hole he crawled out of. I said, making it even more obvious about how much I hated that loser Dave.
“Kym, I know he’s difficult, and I know you hate him. I really don’t like him either, but please act like a kind human being until he leaves ok? I’m sure it would mean a lot to Corinne.
“Grrrr, fine. But only cuz you guys are my besties. I said, rolling my eyes. I couldn’t believe it, I just agreed to be nice to one of my many mortal enemies, AND be refrained from expressing my opinions until he left!!! I couldn’t believe it! Well, they ARE my best friends and always will be, so I guess I had to. I followed Rachel into the living room, although walking slowly. I silently entered the room, and noticed how Dave acted like he didn’t see I was there. He was such a dickhead.
“Hey Rachel, can you please help me find something in my bag? Corinne said, and they both left the room leaving me alone with one of the world’s biggest dickheads.
“Hi. I said, breaking the awkward silence.
“Hi. Still single and unhappy? he said.
“No. I’m going out with someone now. I said, trying to say as little as possible.
“Is he imaginary? he said, smirking like a fucking prep kid.
“No actually, he’s Billie Joe from Green Day. I said, facing him, my arms crossed.
“I doubt that Billie Joe would want someone like you. You’re not attractive, you’re not easy, and you’re Asian. He said, piercing me with his glare.
“FUCK YOU. I said, leaping onto him. I couldn’t take it anymore!!! So much hatred!!! I knocked him off the couch and onto the floor, and I landed on his chest. I had him pinned down, so I took advantage of it by repeatedly punching his face.
“How dare you come into my home, and insult me you motherfucking dipshit!!! I screamed at him. He flipped me over and stood up. He jumped onto me landing on my stomach with his elbow, like a wrestler, winding me. He stood back up, and kicked me. I’d been in this situation too many times. I rolled away from him and his foot, stood up, and kneed him in the balls. I pushed him over and slapped him. Like I had hoped, he now had my signature hand print on his cheek. I smiled to myself, and pushed him over, making him fall down onto the ground.
“I HATE YOU, I HATE YOU, I HATE YOU!!! I screamed, continuing punching him. Rachel and Corinne came back into the room.
“KYM!! STOP IT!! Rachel screamed, dragging me away from Dave.
“Are you alright baby? Corinne said, hugging Dave.
“Him? What about me? I said.
“You were hurting him! Corinne said.
“So? He insulted me, and he kicked me a fair few times! Not that you care! You’re all too busy fretting over ‘poor little Dave’ I said, rolling my eyes, and walking away. “I’m going out ok? I don’t want to be anywhere near that dickhead. I said, grabbing my bag, my keys, and storming out the door. Neither Rachel or Corinne did anything to stop me, they just watched me leave. I checked my watch, it was 6:20. I decided to go to the park and sit on the swings. When I got there, the park was nearly deserted except for a couple of parents and their children, neither of which were big enough for the swings. I sat down and rested my head in my hands. Tears came into my eyes. Memories, painful memories came flooding back. Dave, insulting me…Dave, kissing another girl…Dave, beating me up. I was so angry. I had no other release. I drove to my old hangout, where I’d go when life was too much, where all the young drug dealers were. I looked around for my friend, who I hadn’t seen in years. I eventually found him.
“Hey Chris. I said.
Hey hey Kymmy! Long time, no see! he said.
“Give me the usual, I said. “If you remember. I joked. He passed me a joint, and I gave him my money.
“Kym! Old friend’s don’t pay! he said, pulling me into a bear hug.
“Join me for this one and we’ll call it even. I said, smiling. We snuck around the alley we used to go to get high. He lit up his joint, and passed me the lighter.
“Oh god, I’ve missed this. I said, taking in a deep breath.
“Yea, we’ve missed you around here. Chris said. After a few minutes, all my fears, and troubles were gone. I felt on top of the world, happy and giggly. I hopped into my car and somehow managed to get home, where I found Dave, Corinne, and Rachel all out of the house. I stumbled around the house, and then passed out on my bedroom floor.
* Rachel’s POV *
After Kym stormed out, I took Corinne and Dave out cuz I didn’t want Dave to be there when she back and was on my way home. I pulled into the driveway and saw Kym’s car on an odd slant. I rushed out of the car and into the house. There was no sign of Kym, but there were very loud snoring noises coming from her room. I walked down the hall, just to check it was her. Yep, it was. Sound asleep on her bedroom floor. I left the room and closed her door to quieten down the noise, and then went to watch TV.
In a few hours, Kym emerged from the hall scratching her head, and yawning. I smiled at her, and she gave me a small grin back. I went to the kitchen and put enough leftover spaghetti for the both of us in the microwave. When it finished reheating, I separated it into two bowls and grated cheese over them. I carried them into the other room, to find Kym watching ‘Simpsons’ on television. Well, not really watching, she was just staring blackly at the screen. I placed the spaghetti on the table in from of her.
“Thanks Rachina. She said, looking up at me.
“It’s ok. You looked like you needed some food anyway. I replied. I then sat down on the couch next to her, and joined in watching the show.
* Kym’s POV *
Rachel and I sat in silence, eating our meals and watching TV.
“Where did you go today? she asked me, looking up from her bowl.
“Oh, I just went to the park. I said. I didn’t tell her about going to the alley, or about Chris, cuz she would know what I was doing, and she was the one who made me promise I wouldn’t smoke again, but I guess I broke my first promise ever.
“Ok, she said. I looked at the TV and the Simpsons had finished. It was now the news. Rachel and I sat in silence, which was weird, staring at the TV, but I wasn’t paying attention, until the reporter said
“And finally, Billie Joe has been sighted with someone new. I instantly started really listening and watching.
“He was seen at the premier of ‘Boogeyman’ with a new girl. Is she a one night stand, or here to stay? We’ll just have to wait and see. After the movie, we followed the happy couple to a restaurant where they dinned together. Then took a late night walk on the beach where they were found making out like there was no tomorrow. I stared at the TV. There was footage of me and Billie Joe on the beach. It was horrible to watch! I looked like a skank whore, kissing Billie Joe like that on public television!!! How was I supposed to know there were camera men and paparazzi hiding somewhere in the bushes???? IT WASN’T MY FAULT! I was just staring at the screen with my mouth hanging open.
“Well, Billie Joe’s new love interest is obviously feeling quiet frisky! the lady joked looking at the mini version of what everyone across the state just saw. I switched it off, not wanting to see anymore of myself. Rachel walked out of the room, and returned holding a magazine.
“Kym, look at this. She said, handing it to me open on a certain page. I looked at it. There was a massive heading, and pictures of me and Billie Joe. Damn it! I hated publicity!!! I almost never let people take photos of me, and really hated it. I tore out the two pages, and ripped them up into little confetti sized pieces, and sprinkled them down onto the floor, like snow. I decided to go to bed, 9:33, a little earlier than usual, but I didn’t have anything better to do. Rachel was on the phone to Tre, and I had no idea what they were talking about, I just hoped the news report and magazine article wouldn’t come up.
