Adoption and childhood dreams, chapter 3
I wondered what I should do. Go over to her, talk to her? Wait and see if she comes to me?
"Billie? You ok?"
"Uh huh." Tré came over.
"Who you staring up?"
"Her."
"Wow. Get in there, dude." He pushed me in the direction of the bar. I walked over to where she was standing, and went to order a drink.
"Can I get a beer, please?" I smiled to her out of politeness. My knees were shaking like hell.
"Do you want anything?" I asked
"No thanks. Got mine." Her voice... it was angels laughing...
"Sure? Thanks." I sat down next to her.
"I'm Billie Joe. Billie... but you already knew that, didn't you... ?" I said, feeling stupid. She laughed
"I'm Adrienne Nesser. Do you want to go outside?"
"Sure." I looked round. Tré was making kissy mimes at me.
We reached the park across the road and found a bench not covered in bird shit to sit on.
"That was a great gig."
"You think? Thanks." There was a bit of an awkward silence.
"You wanna go for a walk?"
"Yeah, ok."
"Come on, and I'll show you something." I got up and followed her into the park. We walked for a while, and came out in a clearing with a lake in the middle. She walked over to the edge, where the sun was just rising.
"Beautiful, isn't it."
"Uh huh." I was in a dream, I was sure. My mind was wandering into a day dream. I didn't know what to do or say. There was a silence for a while
"Um... I'd love to meet up again, properly... can I have your number?" Ok, now I really didn't know what I was saying.
"Yeah... here." She got a piece of paper from her pants and looked for something to write it with. She found and eyeliner pencil, and wrote her name and number.
"I'll call you tomorrow."
"Ok. I'll look forward to it." I watched her as she walked away, then, before she was out of view, she turned round and waved. I fell down on the ground, like my legs had collapsed from under me. The grass was wet, but somehow I didn't care. I looked at the piece of paper.
"Adrienne... " I whispered under my breath
"Hey, Billie who are you talking to now? Your new, hot friend left, like fifteen minutes ago." Tré walked up "We've been looking for you for, like, two hours. Where the fuck did you get to?"
"Uh huh... here."
"You ok? She must have been one hell of a hottie then, you're actually lost for words for once."
"Shut up. You can't exactly talk, Frank."
"You shut up. And don't call me that, lover boy." I pushed him over a log, and he stopped talking. We reached the 'tour bus' and climbed in.
"Oh hi. I got pizza." Mike mumbled through a mouthful of cheese.
"Gimme!"
"No. not unless you apologize for spilling your drink over me so I had an 'accident' in front of those two chicks."
"Didn't I go find Billie for doing that?"
"Yeah but... grovel, you whore." Tré got down on his knees and started to lick Mike's converses, while apologizing.
"Hey, Tré, do you know where they've been? Cuz I wouldn't lick them."
"Billie. Shut up."
"Yeah, go drool over that girl. Can I have her if she hates you?"
"No." I took a piece of pizza and went off. I sat on my bunk, and when I thought of her, a tune came into my head. The one Mike and Tré had been playing, back in Oakland. I should really try to write something for it, I thought. But as it was 6:30am I turned over and went to sleep.
The next morning I woke up. I say morning. I mean 3:00 in the afternoon. I rolled over, and fell out of bed. I sat up, rubbing my head. There was something I had to do. No one else was awake, so I got a cup of coffee and went outside. It was freezing cold, and starting to rain. I heard a noise behind me and turned round.
"Hi."
"Hey." It was Mike.
"How long you been up?"
"Like, ten minutes."
"Not called that chick yet then?"
"Huh?"
"The girl from the gig! Please say you remember! Brown eyes, dreads, black hair. She gave you her number." I thought for a minute, then remembered. How could I have forgotten?
"Oh shit! Her!" I ran off back into the book mobile, and started to search for the number. I found it under Tré, and dialed the number. As I did, I whispered her name. Adrienne. Her phone started to ring, and she answered.
"Hi?" she sounded like she had just woken up.
"Er, hi, it's um, Billie Joe. From last night."
"Oh God, hi! How are you?"
"Tired. Did I just wake you up or something?"
"Kinda... "
"Sorry... I can ring back."
"No, that's fine... look, do you want to go out tonight?
"Um... I don't know anywhere we can go but... yeah... " she laughed.
"We can go outta town. There isn't really much to do here."
"Do you want to see a movie? If there's a cinema." i suggested.
"Yeah, there is... we can do that. I can get us tickets."
"No, let me... no... when do you want to meet?"
"Well, I can come to your tourbussy thing, seeing as you don't know where I live."
"Yeah, that's good... say, at 7:30?"
"Ok. See you then."
"Bye."
"Bye... Billie."
I hung up and my legs buckled back and I fell on the floor. I had a date with the hottest girl in the world!!!! I got up, drained my coffee and went to sit in shock of what had happened.
"Billie? You ok?"
"Uh huh." Tré came over.
