You Got Me On My Knees, chapter 14

"Layla. I'm so glad you called. Just let me go check on Estelle for a second and I'll be right back."

"Won't Estelle come with us?"

"I uh, I told my mother to come baby-sit and everything so there's no need."

"Oh." I was clearly disappointed. "Okay then. Can I see her before we go?"

"Of course. Go ahead."

Estelle was playing with a bunch of toys Mike had bought for her and seemed really happy in her own little world. "Ellie!" she shouted once I appeared on her door.

"Stella!" I shouted back and picked her up to give her a generous kiss.

"Are you going to take me for a walk?" the young girl asked.

"I was actually going to go out with your mom but I'll take you out tomorrow."
"Witch's honor?" she put her nose between her index and middle finger. I had recently gotten her hooked up to 'Bewitched'. The TV show, you know?

"Witch's honor." I told her.
"Great! Will we go to the fair? And on that roller coaster?"
"Stella, how old are you?"
"Two and a half."
"Well I am twenty one and a half and I'm still afraid to death of roller coasters."

"Okay." I talked to her for a little more and then Anastasia came to give the well known 'you be a good girl while I'm gone' speech which I ashamedly took advantage of by going to The Place of Worship. My records were still there, and the place I used to sleep in was still referred as 'Layla's room'.

I wanted Mike then.

My life was inside those records and every record was Mike.
See, records have helped me fall in love, no question.

"Layla? Ready to go?" Anastasia asked.
"Aaaah... sure."

What was I supposed to discuss with her? That I wanted her to divorce Mike? That I felt extremely jealous of her for just being able to see him every day? Wake up and go to sleep with him like I was dying to do?

See, the thing is that Mike was taken away from me violently. One minute I was kissing his bare back, telling him to get up from bed and next minute I was gone and he had a child on the way. We had even agreed that we were going to visit my parents as a couple and instead I was forced to go to their house alone and live there. We had split up before we even had a chance to do anything more than sex and that was what killed me; I felt unfulfilled.

"The weather is improving." I said and drunk another sip of my coffee.

"Yeah. We should go shopping one of these days."

"Sounds good. There's actually this friend of mine who is getting married next month and she says she wants to go shopping too so maybe all three of us could." At least I was being nice even though my heart wasn't on it.
"Sure I would love that! Have you heard from Mike today?"
"Didn't he call you?"

"No. Did he call you?"

"No." That came out as a fainting noise. Sort of a 'nnn' type of thing. To my great surprise I didn't want to hurt her.

"Oh. Well maybe he is too busy."

"I'm sure that's it."

Mike, Billie and Tre called me every day, Billie twice a day. Except for my birthday when they all called countless of times. Mike was the first one. He wished me happy birthday and told me to see if his present had arrived.

"You sent the Beatles record?"

"No of course not. Wouldn't trust the post office."
"So, what, I get another present?"
"Yes."

"Mike! Stop being Santa Claus, you put me in a difficult position."

If I had him near me once I saw the gift I would undress him and make love to him without even thinking about his marriage, his family or anything else. But thankfully he was miles away and I couldn't let out any kind of sound let alone words.

"Mike what did you... "
"You're welcome."
"This is not possible... "
"Oh come on El don't cry."
"Easier said than done Mr. Dirnt."
"Listen I got to go; enjoy your birthday. I'll call you later ok?"

You're wondering what the present was, aren't you? Two tickets to a cinema near my parents' house.

Yeah well I didn't expect anyone to share my surprise and feeling of eternal love for Mike Dirnt by this, since I haven't explained some stuff to you but until you find out try to understand the following: Mike could have bought me Europe and I wouldn't be as stunned as I was by these two tiny pieces of paper. Billie and Tre called an hour after, singing happy birthday and torturing me by saying "Oooh I've found the greatest gift but I'm not telling you what it is!" or telling me that I was getting old.

But I didn't care.

Mike had just showed me how much I meant to him. And it was more than I could ever imagine.
