A Day On The Green, chapter 4
‘Tre you look good just relax’, Billie said trying to get his friend to stay calm behind his drum kit.
‘Billie Joe I can’t, she’ll walk in, hear me behind this, think I suck and not wanna even know me’, Tre said worryingly that his playing might affect his chances.
‘Dude, its Steph we’re talking about. Come on man relax’, Billie Joe told him picking up blue.
‘Okay, okay’, Tre said, wiping his sweat of his forehead. He started to play a relaxed beat as the others joined in. They were disrupted by Steph coming in but Tre seemed not to notice and play on.
‘Nice playing’, she complimented him, ‘Just hold you sticks a little more freely’, she told him. Tre seemed to stop and pay attention to what she said. He let his grip loosen a little, before he started off playing again, smiling to himself. Billie Joe put down his guitar and followed Steph outside to where she was heading.
‘So, do we have a yes out of you?’, he asked her. Steph flicked her eyes up at him, and took the joint she was smoking out of her mouth.
‘Nope. Not yet’, she said, looking as if she was paying more attention to the smoke rising around her other than the boy talking to her.
‘But you just came in and like kinda complemented him’, Billie Joe pushed forward.
‘Just cos I complemented him doesn’t mean I’m gonna help him. I just said his playing sounded alright’, she said, dropping the joint to the ground before she stepped on it to put it out.
‘Why are you so for this thing working out anyways?’, she asked curiously, ‘What’s in it for you?’.
‘Nothing, why would I want anything to be in it for me?’, he asked her wondering where this was coming from. He watched Steph take her eyes off him and look around him to find an answer.
‘No reason, you’re just like really eager for this to all happen’, she said, getting up from where she sat.
‘Come on, you guys are gonna play for me. I’m bored out of my wits and well, I don’t have band practise today’, she said, making Billie Joe follow her back inside.
-An Hour Later-
‘Oh that was good’, Steph told them, taking a last sip of beer from the stubby she had been holding for no longer than about 5 minutes. The room and all of them, smelt like the stench of alcohol and pot mixed together. She dropped the bottle to the floor and sat upright on the couch she was stretched out on.
‘Are you guys playing in the battle of the bands?’, she asked enquiringly but half not there.
‘Yeah we are. You playing?’, Mike asked, dropping a half rolled joint to the ground.
‘Not this time, maybe in another’, she said, helping herself up.
‘Awe why not. You know you look good behind your kit’, Billie Joe said adding, ‘Sound even better’.
‘Nah. I can’t be bothered playing infront of a group of wanna bee cheerleader/groupie girls screaming that they want boys to come and play for them’, she told them all in a non sarcastic tone.
‘Well are you gonna come?’, Mike asked her, wondering where his joint had gotten to.
‘I don’t know, probably not’, she said. Tre looked at Billie Joe, letting him know that he needed her to be there as they defiantly knew the cheerleaders would be there. Meaning Laura would be as well.
‘Ahh, no you have to’, Billie Joe told her, standing up, ‘Please?’, he asked offering her another drink.
She flicked her eyes from him over to Tre and back.
‘She’s gonna be there isn’t she?’, Steph asked, taking the bottle.
‘She might be’, Tre said awkwardly, putting the drink to his mouth. Steph let her eyes wander the room, and then settle back down again.
‘Alright, I’ll show up, but the minute she see’s me, I’m leaving’, she quoted out aloud. Tre smiled. Maybe finally things were gonna turn out just like they should have.
‘Hey where’s Jason?’, Steph asked, wondering where her brother was so that she could have his keys to the house. The four of the looked around the garage to notice Jason, totally out of it, lying down against Tre’s drum bass.
‘I guess, I could get them later’, Steph said yawning sitting down back on the couch beside Tre. She let her eyes gradually close and slowly leaning heavily to the left, fell asleep against the drummer.
‘See Tre, she’s totally give in’, Billie Joe said, smiling to himself. He watched Tre try and make himself more comfortable for the sleeping girl. He shifted himself causing her to fall straight into his lap.
‘Yeah but what if I’ve totally given in?’, he replied, letting his eyes gloss over as he kept an eye on her.
‘What do you mean buddy?’, Billie Joe asked, trying hard not to fall asleep himself as, Steph, Mike and Jason had already done.
‘Don’t worry mate, don’t worry’, Tre let out slowly and despairingly before he too drifted off into a slumber...
