Alcoholic Giggles Just Come With The Scene, chapter 2
Kai smiled softly and carried on studying, whilst taking a mouthful from a half full bottle of beer.
"Would you like a little, sweetheart?" he offered kindly, holding the bottle out for Jocelyn to take. She paused for a few seconds, before reaching out and wrapping her fingers around the bottle gently.
"T-thank you..." She took a mouthful, before handing it back to Kai and closing her eyes sleepily, resting against the ageing brickwork. "I'm not really much of a drinker."
"Fair enough." There was a deathly silence for a few moments as Kai jotted notes from his textbook, and as Jocelyn breathed in and out softly. She slowly absorbed her surroundings; looking around the quiet, shaded confines of beneath the bridge, before eying a skateboard poking out from Kai's backpack.
"I'm sorry," she stammered desperately. "I get panic attacks and then I start hyperventilating and can't breathe... " He wriggled to sit in front of her, and placed his reassuring hands on her tense shoulders, before beginning to massage gently.
"Relax. It's okay. I really needed company anyway; I really don't mind giving- what's the saying- a helping hand." She relaxed her stiff shoulders and inhaled deeply, opening her eyes slowly as Kai wriggled back against the brick wall.
"I'm going to be eighteen in a few days," she stuttered quietly, pushing her flyaway hair from her eyes. He pushed his textbook and notepad to the side, leaning back and smiling quietly to himself.
"I don't remember a lot about my eighteenth. I turned eighteen about a month ago. My friends and I walked about getting plastered and taping ourselves doing loads of mad tricks." Jocelyn concentrated hard on his simple, broken English, and faint accent, listening intently to his stories and anecdotes. He giggled sharply, smiling widely as he recounted as much as he could remember of his birthday celebrations.
"Oh my God, you have the most infectious laugh!" she gasped. "That's so adorable! Awww..." Kai blushed deep scarlet and giggled shyly, looking away to the ground quietly. Jocelyn watched him screw up his face gently as he laughed gently, taking several more mouthfuls of beer. "Awww...Where are you from?"
"I'm Finnish," he replied softly, regaining his composure. "My family came from Finland when I was twelve. I'm sorry if I make mistakes with my English, but I am still learning... " They locked eyes with one another for a few moments, smiling hysterically and blushing uncontrollably. "Hey, sweetheart, I'm going to have to leave in a minute or two- I have band practice at half three." He glanced down at his watch.
"Y-you have a band? What do you play?"
"My voice. I love to sing. It's ten past three at the moment, so I really have to go now; it's at least fifteen minutes to Brandon's-"
"Urrm, Kai? It's twenty to four according to my watch." Kai took off his watch and threw it down in frustration, throwing his books into his backpack and downing the last of the beer in the bottle.
"Oh my God, I'm going to be so late; I'm so sorry, sweetheart, I'll see you around sometime!" He jumped up and ran across the grass onto the pavement, muttering incoherently in Finnish to himself under his breath. He put his board down on the ground and pushed himself away. Jocelyn grabbed her own bag and hooked her skateboard underneath her arm, running after him as fast as her shaking legs could carry her.
"Kai, I'll drive you there! It's okay, you don't have to be too late, and I'll give you a lift!" He stopped and turned around, smiling at her with a real sense of relief. She met his appreciative gaze as he sucked in his chest slightly, recovering slowly from his sudden outburst of energy.
"You can drive?"
"Well... yeah. I passed my test a few weeks ago, so I'm still being pretty careful on the roads, but I drove down here to do a little shopping and figured I might as well take the chance to some skating, so I brought my board with me. Would you like a lift?" Kai came towards her and wrapped his arms around her firmly, hugging her tightly and planting a kiss on her cheek.
"Yes! Sweetheart, you've saved my life! Will you be okay to drive, you're not still feeling unwell?"
His voice was crackling and wheezing like static as he spoke, and turned away to cough noisily into cupped hands.
"I'll be fine, honestly! I was just a bit shaken up, but honestly, I'm feeling much better now. Hey, you don't look too good; you look ever so pale and dizzy. Are you feeling okay?" She put her hand gently on his shoulder and squeezed softly. "I don't think it's me that needs looking after!"
"I just got a little stressed and worked up about being so late, that's all," he replied, putting his hand to his chest and inhaling deeply. "I'm alright now." Jocelyn raised an eyebrow and looked at with soft concern. "Thank you."
"Sure?"
"I'm a fighter. I'll hang in there," he nodded, with a tiny hint of a smile creeping onto his face. "Always a fighter."
