Ha ha, you're dead!, chapter 13
"What are we going to do, Billie? We got nowhere to go!" I said and suddenly felt really desperate.
"Calm down, Maria! We'll figure something out!" Billie answered and calmly stroked my shoulders.
"Don't you get it, Billie? The longer we're on the run, the punishment will only get worse and worse!"
"What? You want me to turn myself in?"
"Well, yeah! Maybe you'd just get to clean up garbage on the ground, and you'd still get to practice with the band, which is so important to you." I realized that it sounded a bit sarcastic. I didn't mean it like that. Or did I?
Billie thought about it for a second. He opened his mouth to say something, but he stopped. Red and blue lights crossed the alley. The cops. They'd found us.
"Fuck!" Billie said and thought for two more seconds and walked slowly over to the police car. "Hey, I'm done with running now!" he said and looked at me, but he didn't look happy or thankful. Not even mad. He just looked empty.
I came over to the police car too. The police man handcuffed Billie, told him to get into the car.
"You don't need to come along! You haven't done anything wrong, really!" the police man said and gave me a tissue to dry up the tears. God damnit! Why couldn't Billie at least be mad at me instead of looking like a zombie!
"No, I'll come too! I want to support my friend!" I said and reached out my hands.
"There's no need for handcuffs!" the police officer said and opened the door for me.
Billie didn't say a word. He just looked out the window. What was he thinking? Was he thinking at all? Billie would never do something like this!
"C'mon Billie say something!" I begged and took his cuffed hands. "Anything!"
"What do you want me to say?"
"Anything!"
"Like I love you?"
"What? No! Not if you don't mean it!"
"But you want me to mean it?"
I looked at him. Confused. Where did all this come from? This wasn't like Billie!
"I......I......" I let go of his hand and turned away and looked out the window.
"You like Adie!" I said and felt even more tears fall rapidly from my eyes.
"Aren't you happy for me?" Billie looked at me with big, teary, green eyes.
"I've gotten my heart broken three times in one week, Billie, I just need some time!"
"But why can't you accept that I'm in love with Adie?"
"I have accepted it!" I was yelling now. "It's not like I've called her a slut or a whore as many other would do! And I don't blame you for liking her! She's one of the sweetest persons I've ever met! I just need some time, Billie! Why can't you accept that?"
I looked at him. My face turned red with anger. Why couldn't he just understand?
Billie looked down. Was that a tear falling from his eye?
"I don't like Adie! I love her!" he murmured and turned away from me.
"Everything alright back there?" the officer asked and looked at me. I nodded and smiled at him and was silent the rest of the trip.
"Yeah! I beat him up!" Billie said and looked really uncomfortable. The officers looked at him. They were doing the good cop, bad cop thing.
"Why did you do it?" the one officer (who obviously was playing the good cop) said. Billie looked down and over at me. I was allowed to sit there. Mostly because I denied to go.
"Because he kissed Maria, and I got a bad temper!" he said and looked down.
"That's no good reason!" the other officer said.
"Probably not, but that's it!" Billie said and looked the officer straight in the eyes to show him that he wasn't scared of him.
"Well, young man! You'll be looking forward the trial I suppose?" the bad cop said and went out the door. The other cop came over to me.
"We have to go now!" he said and gave me a smile of sympathy.
"Can I have ten minutes with him?" I asked and looked at him with teary eyes. The officer looked uncomfortable. He was probably not allowed to leave us alone.
"Five minutes!" he said and went out the door.
"Billie! I can make Jim only want an apology! I promise! I won't let you down this time!" I said desperately and kneeled by Billie's said and felt more tears fall out of my eyes.
Billie just looked at me. He didn't say anything.
"C'mon, Billie! Please!" I leaned my head against his stomach and started to sob uncontrollably.
"Please, Billie!" I looked up at him again. This time he nodded, and gave me a little smile.
"If you tell Adie that I miss her, and....that...I love her!" Billie stuttered.
"I'll tell her that you miss her, but you have to tell her yourself that you love her!"
I went outside where the officer was standing, looking into the ceiling.
"He's a good friend of yours?"
"He's my best friend!" I answered and dried up some tears. The officer nodded as if he had made a point.
"I'll drive you home!"
"Calm down, Maria! We'll figure something out!" Billie answered and calmly stroked my shoulders.
