2,000 Light Years Away, chapter 7
Soft lips slowly pressed up against Billie Joe's cheek, as his eyes slowly cracked open. He blinked his tired eyes a few times, and stared up into those pale blue eyes that he was so fond of.
"Billie!" Roxy cried. Her eyes gleaming with tears. She hugged him gently.
Billie was confused, observing the unfamiliar room he was in. Pain began to bite at him. He had a really bad head ache, and his arms stung. After a few minutes a hospital room materialized before him.
The room was white, and very bright. He crancked his neck to look at Roxy.
He gave a weak and sleepy smile.
"Hi, Roxy," she smiled back, tears sparkling in her eyes.
"I came as soon as I heard."
Billie Joe suddenly felt more confused and panicked. And then the memory of Kyle on pouncing on him struck his brain.
"Why am I here?! What happened? Where's Adie?! Is she okay?!" he franticly asked. He shifted all his weight to his elbow, trying to sit up, but a horrible pain surged through his arm.
"Ow!" he shouted, making Roxy jump.
He laid back down and surveyed the stitches in his elbow.
"Oh Billie Joe! I'm sorry. I forgot to tell you. The doctors called your mom and your mom told me about the whole thing. Last night this big guy knocked you down a few concrete steps. You hit your head really hard and passed out and busted your elbow open. And the doctor says you have a pretty nasty bruise on your head. Nothing major. Thank god."
"Geeze, I'm such a pussy." Billie Joe sighed.
Roxy chuckled, then sat down on the edge on Billie Joe's bad side. She ran her fingers through his hair, affectionately. Her eyes glittered with threatening tears as she said, "I missed you."
Just then a nurse walked through the door. She smiled.
"Good morning."
"Morning, ma'am." Billie tried to smile back.
"Someone's here to see you."
Billie Joe sat up.
"Adie?!" he asked, anxiously, but just then, his mother walked through the door.
"Billie Joe!" she stumbled over to him in her high heels, and wrapped her arms around her son. "I'm so glad you're okay! You don't even know how alarmed I was when I got the phone call from the hospital!" she pulled her son into a hug, and then kissed him on the forehead.
"I was here all night. I just drove off for awhile to get you a sandwich."
She handed Billie Joe a Mc Donald's breakfast biscuit sandwich.
"Mom, don't worry. I'm alright. It was no big deal," Billie said, nervously eyeing the passing people in the halls.
"Where's Adie?!" he asked, impatiently trying to look over Roxy.
"Who's Adie?" Roxy asked in a jealous tone. She sounded like a bitchy girl friend.
Billie's mom stopped talking to the nurse she had been having a discussion with.
"Oh, Adie? Was that the girl with the glasses?"
"No." Billie sighed "That was her friend, Katie."
He paused for a minute to think.
"Excuse me, ma'am," he called to the nurse.
"Is Katie still in the hospital? The girl with the glasses?"
"Uh...I think so. Would you like me to call her up for you?"
"Yes! Thank you very much."
He was very impatient to talk to Katie and find out where Adie was. He missed her too much, and was afraid that she was still lost.
After a few minutes Katie walked into the room, along with Mike close by.
"Mike!" Billie Joe smiled.
Mike high fived him.
"How you doin'?" Mike grinned
"Well how the hell do you think I'm doing?" Billie Joe returned his grin.
Katie leaned over Billie Joe's bed side. Her eyes were weary with dark circles, and her hair was messed up a bit.
"Billie Joe, I've got some bad news kid."
At that moment, Billie Joe's heart stopped, and his throat tightened. His beautiful green eyes went wide.
"What happened to Adie?" he asked, by instinct.
Katie sighed and looked over at a wall, trying not to make eye contact with him.
"Look...Adie is...missing. We can't find her. I had a long talk with Kyle. He and I were good friends once upon a time. Turns out, Adie came over, said hello, then told him she was going to go home. We don't know what happened to her, but she didn't make it to the car in time."
Suddenly that sick feeling filled Billie's insides. The stinging pain of hopelessness stabbing into his guts. His stomach felt strange, his throat was dry, and his eyes stung.
He couldn't speak. He opened his dry mouth, but the words did not escape.
Katie held his hand between her two hands.
"I'm sorry. Billie Joe. Don't worry..."
She looked up at him. A tear dripped down her cheek.
"We'll find her," she whispered through clenched teeth.
Billie Joe didn't know what feeling to chose for there were so many burning away at his mind like acid.
He felt depressed, furious, and hopeless all at once.
After a few moments of silence he through off his bed sheets and stumbled up.
Everyone in the room turned their attention to him.
"That's it! I'm going to find Adie! Where the hell are my clothes?" he asked, surveying the hospital dress he was wearing.
His mom ran over to him.
"Honey, lie down. You need your rest! You must be delirious from the meds. It's ok sweetie."
"No!" Billie Joe protested, pulling away from his mother like a child not wanting to go home from the park.
He yanked off the skimpy cloth and stormed out of the hospital room, butt naked.
Mike laughed behind him, then whistled like you would to an attractive girl.
"Alright Billie! Whoo! Hey man! I'll come and help you find your girl!"
Billie ran as fast as he could. His mom, the nurse, and Roxy followed, and Mike and Katie were behind them.
"Wait! You're not in proper condition to leave the hospital yet!" the nurse fumed.
"Billie! Get my car started! Mike and I will hop in after you," Katie ordered.
Billie Joe turned around and Katie tossed her keys to him.
"And take your fuckin' clothes you psycho!" Mike shouted back at him.
A pair of jeans and a tee shirt landed on Billie's head.
"Billie Joe you better get your ass back here right now!" his mother screamed, furiously.
He looked back. Mike was in the lead with Katie behind him and mom at their heels. But wait...where did Roxy go?
Billie Joe turned a sharp corner and almost ran into a horrified nurse as he passed up people staring at him and his naked self.
Up ahead was an elevator. The door opened and he pushed a freaked out looking old lady out of the way and ran in just as the door closed behind him.
"Billie!" Roxy said, outraged.
"Oh shit," he mumbled, turning around.
Pretty smart of her to take the elevator, he thought to himself.
"What the hell are you doing Billie Joe?" she growled.
Billie Joe looked her straight in the eye.
"I'm going to go find the girl who actually gave me a chance."
"But...but...there's something I need to tell you."
"What's that ?" Billie said in a hurry.
"Billie Joe, I love you," the words desperately spewed from those lovely lips. The words Billie awaited for years.
Billie Joe looked her in the eyes. He came up close to her, and grabbed her hands.
Faces just centimeters away from each other. Billie Joe leaned over and whispered in her ear.
"Well too fuckin' bad sweet heart." he gave a cheeky grin.
The elevator door opened and Billie dashed out before Roxy could say another word.
-----------11 hours later----------
Billie Joe Mike, and Katie were in Katie's car, still searching for Adie. It was now 10 at night, and still no sign of her. They had already looked every place they could think of, and now happiness was draining from Billie Joe as rapidly as the color from his face.
Katie was in the passenger seat, and Mike was in the back with one elbow resting on Katie's chair, directing Billie Joe to places Katie told the two boys she'd think Adie would be. They stopped at a red light. Mike looked over at Billie Joe.
"Hey, are you alright?" Mike asked, concerned.
Billie's face was now visible from the red light. Billie Joe looked worried, and his face was no longer flushed with healthy color. Katie leaned over to examine poor Billie as well.
"Uh, Billie, I think you should let me drive now. Give that bruised up body of yours a rest and go sleep in the back. Mike can sit up here."
The light turned Green, and the car rapidly jolted forward and sped down the street.
"Billie Joe!" Katie said sternly.
"Slow down or get the hell off the wheel and let me drive!" she said impatiently
Billie Joe gave Katie a look. that said seemed to speak for himself before his mouth even opened.
"No, Katie. I need to fine Adie. I'm scared out of my mind for her right now, and I won't sleep until I fuckin' know she's safe."
Katie stared at Billie Joe's eyes which were focused determinably at the road.
"Billie Joe, please please take a rest. Please."
Billie Joe feverishly turned to Katie. She looked serious.
"Please," she said sternly.
They were at a red light. Billie Joe got out of the car, and opened the back door, then hopped in the back with Mike, and Katie drove off into the humid, summer night.
