Even the Sweetest Rose Has a Thorn., chapter 11

It was the end of the day and the big race was up. Sundance was the second leader to the bets, an ok sign.

"I'm so scared Dad," Paprika said while hugging Mike.

"It's ok Paprika, make us proud," Mike said while hugging her back. She nodded and took a deep breath and Jonsie gave her a leg up.

"Be careful for Black Knight, the owners don't like you," Jonsie said. I nodded and came up to the starting gate and Sundance reared. Jonsie tried to calm him down with the other jockeys.

"Stop, it only worsens it, stop!" Paprika yelled. Both the jockeys back away and Sundance calmed down. To Paprika's luck, Black Knight was right next to them in the number four box.

She groaned and got in her jockey position when something overcame her. She closed her eyes so she could concentrate fully on Sundance. The sounds of the gates closing, the silence almost busted her ear drums and then the loud pop. She opened her eyes as they shot out of there.

She was already in third place and Black Knight came roaring up beside her. She closed the gap where the horse was trying to get through. It was amazing how they were already halfway done, just one... more... corner. Then she heard a loud slapping sound. Her head was spinning when Sundance all of a sudden started go absolutely wild, he reared and bucked. Then she realized she was on the ground. The last thing that pasted through her mind was Frankito.

She heard people circling around her and she just whimpered while she woke up. She was still on the dirt track and she heard the sirens.

"Make the pain go away," she whimpered softly.

"It's ok dear, daddy's gonna take it all away," she heard the familiar voice of her father saying.

"It hurts so bad," she said and started crying. Her whole body was numb, couldn't feel anything, She felt like she was part of the dirt track, just.... numb.

Paprika felt myself being lifted onto something stiff and that's when she fell asleep.

Mike was in the ambulance, looking at his daughter who was hooked up to any kind of tube you could think of. He sighed and decided to do something that he hadn't done barely at all, he prayed. Paprika often tried to talk to him about faith and religion but he often either blocked her out or changed the subject. When he thought of this, a new wave of guilt washed over him.

"In today's recent news, Paprika Shorie-Dirnt is still in her coma. After about four weeks of being in a coma, the doctors are starting to lose hope."

Paprika opened her eyes just to be welcomed by a blinding light. She felt someone's hand in her own. She finally came to the decision to squeeze the hand. She gave the hand a very tight squeeze and her eyes seemed accustomed to the light better and opened them a little, while blinking once or five times.

"Praise God, she's alive!" she heard someone say.

"Omigosh Billie Joe, call the nurses, call Mike and Tré and Frankito," she heard Adie's voice say.

"Adie?" she asked while she looked at Adie fully.

"Paprika, I'm so glad you're alive! We were worried to death."

"Takes a lot more then a bucking stallion and a coma to get rid of me," she laughed.

"They're all on their way over," Billie Joe said. Paprika rubbed her eyes and looked around the room, it was filled with flowers of different sorts and stuffed animals, she liked them all but it was a bit much. Her butt was sore and her head felt like it was about to fall off.

"So, you wanna hear something funny?" Adie asked.

"That would be a welcome," Paprika replied.

"Sundance won without the rider, he stayed with everybody else, and they're giving you the money because the people who owned Black Knight came in second so they don't get anything since everyone saw what they did."

"Eh, worse has happened."

"Like what?"

"One time our horse almost got a broken leg and had to be put down, but he just had to be retired."

"Don't you ever think of anything else except for your horses?" Adie asked.

"Well not really, I'm obviously healthy enough, and my life was pretty much circled around horses for about five years and the only people that pretty much cared about me was Dragon and Vulcan, and they're too busy with gang banging, until you guys came along."

"Well it's ok, I can understand where you're coming from I guess."

Then the door burst open and she saw Frankito run in, followed by Tré, who bumped into Frankito and Mike running into Tré, resulting in all three to fall.

"Good to see you too," Paprika laughed.

"Um, hey babe," Frankito said while dusting himself off. He leaned in to kiss her but she moved her hand to cover her mouth.

"I haven't brushed my teeth in four weeks, I don't think you want to kiss me right now Kito," she laughed.

"Fair enough," he sighed while kissing her cheek.
