You're My Angel, chapter 6
"... but I really think she is the one," Billie finished saying.
She was shocked when she realized what he had said but she didn't let her facial expression show that she was. She squeezed Tré's hand tightly.
"But you thought that about Jamie, too... " Tré said noticing her frustration.
"Congratulations," she said trying not to get choked up.
"So... " Tré started. "What are you going to do now? Ask her to marry you or something?"
Adriana could tell that he felt bad for asking that question, but she wanted to know what he was going to do next as well. Billie got up from the table and told them he would be right back.
"What the fuck, Tré?" Adriana turned and asked as soon as Billie was out of earshot. "And how long has he known this girl? Didn't he just meet her?"
"I know," he said looking back over his shoulder to see if Billie had returned yet. "You have gotta do something about this... I can't go through this again."
"Go through what?" she asked impatiently.
"Your... " he stopped. "Nothing, nevermind."
She looked up to see Billie coming back towards the table. He sat down and took a drink of his coke before putting a ring down on the table in front of Tré and Adriana.
"Whoa," Tré said. "That's nice."
"Yeah... it's gorgeous, Billie," she said as she took her hand out from under Tré's. She excused herself from the table and made her way to the bathroom.
"Is she ok?" Billie asked as she walked in the other direction.
"I don't know," Tré told him. "I'll go check on her."
She leaned against the sinks and put her face in her hands and cried. A few minutes later the bathroom door flew open and Tré walked right into the women's restrooms.
"What are you doing, Tré?" she said surprised that he had followed her in there.
"What the hell was that?" he asked impatiently. "I thought we were working to get you over him? I actually thought that we were making progress... maybe I don't know anything about girls after all."
"I don't know... " she said as he hugged her. "I'm just not sure about all of this... I thought I would be ok with it, but obviously I was wrong."
Although Tré and Adriana had been joking about getting wasted earlier in the evening, they decided that it was a very good idea after all. She was in a really bad mood and he knew that he could probably cheer her up simply by getting drunk and acting insanely stupid.
The two of them stayed out and drank until one the next morning before getting Mike to drop them off at home. Adriana knew she was going to have a terrible hangover, but going out helped her keep her mind off of Billie's little announcement.
They tried to go to sleep after they got home but it didn't happen. They just ended up staying awake talking and listening to music. They normally had these random conversations, but this one was especially interesting because of Tré's current state of drunkenness.
Unfortunately, the discussion eventually turned to Billie... something she had hoped that they could avoid for the rest of the... year. Luckily, Tré's ideas always seemed to make a lot of sense after a night of drinking.
"So... " Tré started. "Why are you so upset that Billie is with someone else if you are so set on moving on?"
"I don't know," she sighed. "But I do know that I really don't want to talk about this right now."
"Ok," he said. "I'll back off... for now," he laughed.
The next afternoon when Adriana woke up, Tré had already gotten out of bed. She walked into the kitchen and laid her head down on the bar. Tré set a bottle of Tylenol and a glass of water in front of her.
"Tré if you are cooking breakfast for us because you feel bad for me... " she paused to take some medicine for her throbbing head. "Don't."
"What? I'm not making breakfast because I feel bad for you," he said indifferently.
"Oh," she said sounding surprised.
"I'm cooking because you were still sleeping and I didn't want to wake you up because I felt bad for you," he smiled.
Adriana took a shower after breakfast and then put on some pajama pants and a t-shirt. She flopped down on the couch to watch TV while Tré went to take his shower. As soon as she was comfortable on the couch someone knocked on the door.
"Damn it," she said before getting up to open it.
"Hey," Billie said.
"Hey," she said as she stepped out of the way so he could come in.
They sat on the couch together in silence for a few minutes.
"You left kind of quick last night," he finally said. "What do you think about that?"
"I think you're making a huge mistake," she said without taking her eyes off of the television.
"What?" he asked with a surprised tone. "Why do you say that?"
"Because," she sighed.
"Because why?" he asked.
"Billie... " she said with irritation. "Because I... I... nevermind," she said as Tré walked out of her bedroom.
Later on that night Adriana was desperately trying to fall asleep, but all she could think about was Billie and how frustrated with him she was. She could hear Tré lightly breathing next to her. She wanted to wake him up but she felt bad because he looked so peaceful.
She turned over and tried to clear her mind so she could get some much needed rest. After tossing and turning for thirty more minutes, she decided to wake Tré up so she could talk to him.
"Tré," she whispered. He didn't budge. "Tré, wake up."
"What?" he asked suddenly as he sat up. "What's wrong?"
"Well," she sighed. "What if no one else makes me feel the way that he does?"
"What are you talking about?" he asked in confusion. "Are you even awake?"
"Billie... " she said.
"I'm Tré," he laughed.
"What if I can't find anyone else that makes me feel like I do for him?" she finally said in frustration.
"You'll find someone else... I promise," he assured her. "But you actually have to go look."
"Yeah," she sighed. "I hate doing that though."
"You'll be ok," he said halfway yawning.
"I don't even know where to start," she sighed. "You just set me up with weirdoes," she laughed.
"Start with me then," he said casually.
"What?" she asked feeling surprised at what he said.
"Kiss me... " he said. "And we'll go from there."
"Are you serious?" Adriana asked. "Or are you just screwing around?"
"Yes I'm serious," he said sitting up beside her. "Either you have to tell Billie everything or you have to start looking for someone else to keep you happy."
Just as her lips were about to meet Tré's, she heard a dreadful beeping noise in the room. She couldn't figure out what it was... it sounded so familiar though.
She sat up and realized that Tré was still sleeping beside her and it had been the alarm on her phone that was making the terrible sound. It had only been a dream and for some strange reason, she was a little disappointed.
It was already half-past two when she woke up and she had to be at work at four. She got up and went in the bathroom to take a shower. After her shower, she was standing in front of the mirror almost finished putting on her make-up when Tré came in.
"Hey," he said as he grabbed a towel out of the cabinet.
"Hey," she said.
"You almost done?" he asked as he turned on the shower.
"Yeah," she told him as she put on some perfume.
"Are you ok?" he asked as he rubbed his sleepy eyes. "You're acting weird."
"Yeah," she lied. "I had a dream about you last night."
"Really?" he asked sounding a little excited. "What did we do?"
"You tried to convince me to kiss you... " she paused.
"Did you?" he laughed. "Did you think I was a good kisser?"
"It wasn't real, you retard," she laughed. "And no... the damn alarm went off and woke me up."
"Wait... " he said. "No, you didn't kiss me or no, I wasn't a good kisser?"
"No, I didn't kiss you," she said as she walked out of the bathroom.
"But you wanted to," he laughed as he followed her into the bedroom and sat down on the bed. "I can tell from the disappointment in your voice."
"Yeah... whatever," she rolled her eyes. "But if I did want to, it's only because I'm mad at Billie."
By the time Adriana was ready to leave for work twenty-five minutes later, the only thing Tré had managed to do was brush his teeth. He decided to wait and take a shower later and was still bothering her about what hadn't even happened in her dream.
As she was walking out the door, Tré grabbed her hand and pulled her back into the living room and shut the door behind them. He puts his arms around her and kisses her for a few moments before pulling away.
"Feel anything?" he asked with a big smile on his face.
"Yeah," she laughed. "Your tongue."
"Hey Billie," Tré said as he approached the table that Billie and Adrienne were sitting at. "We need to talk, man."
"Can't it wait?" Billie asked impatiently. "I'm in the middle of a date."
"No... it's very important," he assured him. "Can we go outside for a minute?"
Billie excused himself from the table and walked outside the restaurant with Tré. He looked very irritated with Tré, but he knew what he was about to do had to be done. He handed Billie a folded piece of paper and told him not to open it under any circumstances until he got home that night and was with Adriana.
"Alright," he said sounding annoyed and confused. "Do you need anything else?"
"Yeah," Tré sighed. "Uh, that thing you were gonna ask Adrienne tonight... "
"What about it?" Billie asked as he opened the door to return to his table.
"Just don't do it tonight... wait a couple of days," he pleaded. "Trust me on this one, man."
With that said, Billie walked back into the restaurant and Tré headed to Mike's house. He felt really bad about what he had just done and wondered if he should go back and tell Billie to forget everything he had said. He decided against this and drove on.
Billie cut his date short with Adrienne and didn't stick with his plan on how the night was going to go. Instead he found himself outside of Adriana's door wondering what was written on the paper in his hand.
He was a little worried that she was already asleep and wouldn't come to the door... he didn't think he could resist the temptation of reading it if he had to wait until the next day. He knocked on the door and waited a few seconds before the door opened.
"Hey," she said. "I thought you were going out with Adrienne tonight?"
"Yeah... I dropped her off early," he said as he came into her apartment.
"How come?" she asked. She hoped they had a fight and broke up or something.
"Actually, I'm not really sure," he said as held up the folded piece of paper that Tré had given him earlier. "I was hoping you knew."
"What's tha... " she stopped when she realized that he was holding her letter that she had written a few days before his wedding.
She was shocked when she realized what he had said but she didn't let her facial expression show that she was. She squeezed Tré's hand tightly.
