Letters To The One I Love, chapter 2

"Well" Adrienne said, looking up from the letter she wrote about 17 years ago and folding her arms across her chest, "Things have changed a lot since then, huh?"
Billie looked at her questioningly. "What do you mean?"
"Oh, please, Billie Joe." she said (Billie realized she often used his full name now) and rolled her eyes. "It's been more than three months since we last said sweet things to each other, and if you didn't realize that it just shows that you - "
"Please, Adie, be quiet. The boys don't need to hear." Billie interrupted.
Adrienne sighed. "Yeah, you're right, Billie. I'm sorry."
Billie tried something that was supposed to be a sweet and comforting smile. "I really meant what I wrote, you know."
"Why are you using past tense? Is that supposed to mean that you don't mean it anymore?"
"No, I-" He tried to think of words to comfort her but failed and grabbed another letter instead. This time it included two sheets of paper, what caused Billie Joe to wonder, he didn't use to write more than what fits on one sheet back then. He looked at his wife who was looking out of the window, hurt and obviously suffering from the uncomfortable tension between them too. When did it go wrong? Why did it have to turn out like this? What did he do wrong? Did he do something wrong? Tears made him unable to read the letter, so he just ran over it and gasped when he read the second page. His eyes widened.
"I don't remember sending it to you... " He mumbled.
"Sending what?"
Billie Joe handed her the letter without a word. She looked into his eyes before concentrating on the letter in her hands.

... what? I wrote a song for you. The other day. When we kissed. The words just flew through my head... and I really hope you like it.

Adrienne's eyes widened when she read the first few words. She looked up at Billie Joe who just stared back at her. Turning to read the letter again, she started to smile as she read the words she heard so often.

[i]I sit alone in my bedroom
Staring at the walls
I've been up all damn nightlong
My pulse is speeding
My love is yearning
I hold my breath and close my eyes and dream about her
Cause she's 2000 light years away
She holds my malachite so tight so ...
Never let go
Cause she's 2000 light years away
I sit outside and watch the sunrise
Look out as far as I can
I can't see her but in the distance
I hear some laughter
We laugh together</n>

While she was reading, Billie Joe stepped behind his wife, laid his arms around her waist and rested his head on her shoulder.
"I'm sorry." he told her now, after she finished reading. "I'm so sorry for everything I said or did that hurt you. I never meant to-... I'm really sorry, please believe me. Adrienne. Adie. I love you. I really do."
"I'm sorry, too." she whispered, "I shouldn't have - I really overreacted sometimes."
"What do you think about starting over new?" Billie asked, rocking her from side to side softly.
"I think that's a pretty good idea." Adrienne said and turned to face her husband who smiled warmly.
And after weeks of just shouting at each other, their lips finally met to share a loving kiss. But their sons who stood outside the door, watched everything through the keyhole and giggled hysterically interrupted them. Billie rolled his eyes and stepped out of the room; just to see the backs of the Armstrong brothers disappear down the stairs.
"Joey! Jake! What did I tell you about spying through keyholes?!" he hollered and ran after his sons, leaving Adrienne to chuckle happily for the first time since about three months ago.
