"Hi, I'm Your Neighbour.", chapter 17

What the hell did she do? Did she get drunk? Was she caught with drugs? DID SHE MURDER SOMEONE?!

Thoughts ran through my head as the tone droned on, the other end of the line being picked up soon enough.

"Berkeley Police Department, how may I help you?"

"Yes, I received a call and there have been problems with my mother, Carolyn Calhoun?"

"Oh! Yes, she was found in Venice, as we told you, with an alcohol level of more than 3 times the state limit and was requesting that you post bail."

"Uh, is it OK that I don't pay the bail? I think she deserves to stay for a while, not to be cruel or anything, but I don't really feel comfortable letting her go."

"No problem, she'll stay in a cell for seven days. Is that alright?"

"Yes, sir. Thank you."

"No problem."

*Three days later*

"Hon, let's go bowling." Ethan.

"Ugh, you read my mind! When I was younger, I used to be in leagues. Every Wednesday, I'd go to the alley so I could play. I was in a few tournaments, too. I have three medals." I said.

"Wow. Then I guess you're going to whoop my behind."

"Most likely."

"OK, well, I'll take the boys now so we can get shoes and crap. You said you had to pick something up...?"

"Yeah, so I'll do that, and then get to the alley."

"Alrighty then."

"OK. Advice."

"Yes?"

"You should get the boys so you can go."

"Oh yeah." He then laughed.

Ethan left with the boys and went to the bowling alley. I had to pick something up on my way, so I just walked since it wasn't far. I went and got my pick up and was walking down the sidewalk. It was pitch black sky, with beautiful twinkling stars all around me. I heard a deep voice behind me, of course a person walking on the sidewalk.

"Hey." it said. I stopped dead in my tracks, then slowly turned on my heel. Some guy and his 5 pals were standing there. And they didn't sound happy. The one who'd 'greeted' me stepped right up to my face. I didn't recognize him. He pulled me up by the collar of my jacket and stared into my eyes. Then he let me drop to concrete sidewalk and he signaled his friends to come up. I tried frantically to crawl backwards on my elbows, so I could maybe get up and run, but they enclosed and me started beating me everywhere they could.

I fought back all I could, but it wasn't much. After a few minutes of fists and blood, I heard sirens and a cop pulled up to the scene. Each of the guys ran away, down the next alley, so as not to be caught. The officer that pulled up immediately called an ambulance, and it was there in a few minutes. I didn't need a stretcher; I could walk well enough, all I needed was my cuts to be cleaned. I sat on the back of the ambulance, the doors were wide open. I had stopped crying for a while, simply calming down. Then I saw Billie Joe was walking on the sidewalk on the other side of the street. He looked to his left and saw me, but I wasn't looking at him any more, I was looking down at the ground.

That was one of my habits. While walking, instead of looking straight ahead, I looked down.

His eyes widened as he saw me. He looked both ways before tearing frantically across the road, running up to me. The officer was on her guard, and tried blocking him.

"Whoa whoa whoa!"
"It's okay, I'm a friend."

He looked into my eyes and saw pain, hurt, and fear. He hugged me tightly and I began crying hysterically once again, as I gripped him harder and harder, the tightest I had ever hugged. I cried into him and he hugged me back, knowing I would kill for a hug when something happened.

The officer said I could go to the hospital if I wanted to, to be checked out. I didn't. After she left, Billie hugged me and we stood there for a few minutes. He stopped, pulled his head from my shoulder, and looked at me. Then he kissed me. I knew it was wrong, and we both had spouses, but I let him go anyway. The kiss got more and more passionate every second.

It was a kiss I knew we both wanted for years and years, ever since I'd left.
