Dawn To Dusk, chapter 8
The ambulance rushed up the drive-way in a hurry. The doors to the vehicle swung open with a burst. The paramedics dressed in their blue short-sleeve button up shirt and dark blue pants ran up the steps to the front door. They knocked loudly against the door panes.
"Hello?! We got a call that someone needed our help."One of the paramedics exclaimed.
"Ya, Jara. She needs to be taken in right away!"Gerard replied, jumping up from his seat with Jara in his arms.
"Well then hurry up!"The other paramedic said. "Take her to the truck! Hurry!"
Gerard rushed out the door with the bloody girl in his hands. He clutched her close as the men tried to take her from him, but soon after, let them strap her into the stretcher. He watched the moving vehicle drive away and fade to nothing along the road. He waved his fingers in the air, preying to God that the life of his love was not taken. He would never feel the same if that burden was laid upon him and she were to pass. All the sadness and sorrow he'd feel if she'd leave him. He wouldn't be able to even to live life.
Just then, Gerard remembered that he was in the sun and ran inside. He impatiently waited for sunset before he could go to the hospital. As soon as the night sky hit ground, he was out the door, on his way to the hospital to see if Jara had yet recovered.
When he got to the medical center, he waited a longer time in the waiting room, hood over his face and leaned over facing the floor. There were exactally 642 tiles in the room, Gerard counted. Blue and white, white and blue, in a checkered pattern across the entire spread of the floor. There was a rather odd looking man sitting across the room. He had 5 o'clock shadow and had a sneaky, lying look to him, someone you should never trust. For some reason, Gerard couldn't help but look up to see this man's tired face. The man's shirt had on it stitched "Gilman" in the corner, obviously a name. Perhaps a last name, maybe a first name. As Gerard looked up to see Gilman's face, he had a funny feeling about something. He looked up and saw his deceitful eyes, filled with lies and emense hate. Gilman had a evil grimace across his face and whispered a few words that Gerard will never forget. The words burned into Gerard's brain, stamped with an ink so permanent, so permanent, it left a dark dark stain for all eternity.
"Everyone gets a surprise which is not anticipated."
Finally, the doctor called Gerard in to notify him of any news about Jara. He took one final look at the man who had whispered those few words that he heard loud and clear in his ear.
"Hello,"Dr. Walker said, flipping the pages of his clipboard.
"Uh, hi,"Gerard said, on the edge of his seat, waiting for anything to be given about Jara.
"Yes, let's see. Right this way,"Dr. Walker showed Gerard to a tiny plain white room with nothing but a small examining table and a short stool. He took a seat, trying to keep patient. The doctor sat across on the low to the ground stool.
"Yes, you're with. . . . . ."
"Jara,"Gerard finished, filled with anticipation.
"Oh, yes. The cutter." Gerard looked down, ashamed. He blamed himself for the harm she did to herself. "Let's see. . . .Hmm. . . . Okay. Well, that cut was pretty deep, and she lost a lot of blood."
"Yes," Gerard thought to himself. "Just spill it already!"
"Hmm. . .Well, she'll be fine."Dr Walker finally gave out."We just need to keep her overnight for a few final tests."
Gerard let out a sigh of relief.
"Hmm.. . ."the doctor began again.
"Oh-oh,"Gerard thought,"more?"
"Hmm. . . .Also, it says here she had an overdose of Trazadone."
"Sleeping pills?"
"And anti-depressant." All these thoughts went through Gerard's head. He thought of the first day he met Jara, their first date, their first kiss, their first. . . . . uhh, all leading up until now. "But don't be worried about a thing. She's safe here."
"Right, safe. A vampire safe in a hospital. That's the safest thing in the world," Gerard thought.
The two made their way out of the room. Gerard shook Dr. Walker's hand with a firm, tough grip.
"Thank you doctor. I was wondering if it was okay if I could visit Jara and make sure she's alright for myself."
"Umm, sure. But first, I'm sorry I have to tell you this. But. . . ."Dr. Walker began, stopping midsentence."But, it's my unfortunate displeasure to tell you that. . . .well, Jara lost the baby."
