An Ex-Girlfriend's Revenge, chapter 1
"Mommy!" I heard a voice echo throughout the hallway. I looked at the clock on the side table. 3:12 a. M. This wasn't happening... It was too early. I rolled over and looked at Billie who was sleeping peacefully next to me. I stood up, put on my robe, and walked down the dark hallway. I found Jamie sitting up in his bed. He had a tired, confused look on his face.
"Sweethart, what's wrong? Can't sleep?" I asked, half-asleep myself. He shook his head. I walked into his room and sat on his bed beside him. "Did you have a bad dream?" He shook his head.
"Why doesn't daddy live with us?" I was taken back. After all the shit I had been through these past few years, I never prepared for a question like this, especially from my 7 year old son. I hadn't thought about the past for quite a while, but I remembered it very well... Like it was yesterday.
I moved to Oakland about 7 years ago to try new things and meet new people. But I found my husband. His sister was my next door neighbor and he was visiting for a while. When I met him, I knew I had seen that messy black hair and piercing green eyes before. I had a dream about him the night before... And there he was, in the flesh. When he finally asked me out a few days later, I was thrilled. Meanwhile, his sister, Reeses, and I had become good friends, but she had a few problems of her own. She liked Mike, but after she threatened to tell Billie how I felt, I told Tre she liked him, which made him like her. When she broke his heart, he turned to me, but I had to stay away from him, since I was with Billie Joe. He had kissed me out of impulse once, and I promised to never let it happen again. But all of that disappeared when I thought Billie was cheating on me with his ex-girlfriend. I turned back to Tre, and after a few drinks, we got a little carried away.
When I found out he wasn't cheating, that it was her fault, I regretted what I had done. I told him that I had kissed him, but not the... Other part. After his anger had passed, he forgave me. Then, I found out I was pregnant. I knew the baby was Tre's, and I had to tell both of them. Tre was shocked, Billie was furious and broke up with me. But somehow, after much consideration. Mike ended up with my friend Cassie, Tre with Reeses and me with Billie. We got married and I had 3 more kids, all two years apart, by the time I was 28. Now, I was 29 and the story still confuses me... How could I explain it to my 7 year old?
"It's very complicated... You see, your father and I don't love each other the way he loves Reeses and I love Billie." He looked down.
"I know it's hard not having dad around and having three sisters, but maybe it would be a good chance to bond with Billie." He didn't look up. "I think you two can become really close. Jamie, he would never want to take the place of your dad, but I think he'd like to hang out with you every once and a while."
"Okay... I'll try." I pushed his chin up and he smiled. I smiled and tucked him in. I said good night and left the room. I went back to bed and awoke Billie as I climbed back in.
"What's wrong?" he asked sleepily.
"Nothing... Jamie couldn't sleep, but took care of it." He smiled, kissed me, and we both fell asleep for the night.
