Taking the High Road, chapter 1
"Welcome to the school camp! Hope you lil' chipmunks have fun!" Ms. Reese said. I laughed, and being 10 and very young, my innocent mind rested on the thought that this camp was gonna be really fun, with 'cool' activites and 'awesome' games. But of course, the camp was lame. What made it so special and worth remembering was that particular boy, the cute boy who was always so funny and looking at me with those beautiful eyes.
"So, Mark, you having fun here?" I asked him at the last dinner, smiling. I had no means of flirting then. I mean, how young could I get? "Yeah, this camp rocks!" he replied, flashing a smile that I thought was A-D-O-R-A-B-L-E.
-Mark's POV-
Ok, whoa. Did she just talk to me? Her, the girl I have been crushing on since the beginning of this camp? Oh my god. She is so pretty..."Mark! Yo dude, Mandie's checking you out!" I turned around to face Ken, my partner. I fell for his trick, and stared at the school's prettiest girl(until now) girl, but she was chatting with Jesselyn, her sworn best friend. When she caught me practically staring at her, she rolled her eyes and smiled. Great...my ex-crush just caught me crushing on her... Ken was laughing his head off, and to my dismay, so was Lyz. Oh well, I guess she doesn't like me...
*2 years later*
"Oh my god, they're really coming? Here, to Singapore? THIS IS FRICKING AWESOME CRYSTAL!!" I screamed as me and my best friend Crystal gave each other bear hugs, upon hearing Green Day, our favourite band, was coming to our country for a 2-hour well-planned show.
"Sup', dolls?" Mark came along. Crystal nudged me, seeing that she had been teasing me about liking him. The thing was, I did. But of course, only me and my net friend Valeria knew. "Uh, nothing," she replied for us.
"Then why are you 2 nut cases screaming your brains out?" he asked again, Justin, his best friend, appearing by his side.
"Because GREEN DAY IS COMING TO TOWN!!" we screamed in unison.
"Whatever..." they mumbled and went off.
"Losers, just plain losers. I bet they'll be screaming like us when The Click Five comes anyway. Man, they're gay!" I commented angrily, my heart secretly emitting love juice from the encounter.
"Yeah, yeah, but not too gay for you! Haha, just kidding don't get mad. Hey remember that camp 2 years ago? How was it? I had to miss it, my grandma died, what a bummer, yeah? Anyway, my friends kept talking about it in the forum today. Was it like, pretty awesome?" Crystal asked me. And that was when it hit me point-blank. Mark was from my camp group 2 years ago. I had totally forgotten that, and I was very shocked and my feelings for him seeped deeper in ink on my heart at those particular seconds.
"Oh, yeah that camp was great, absolutely great," I sighed, thinking of those times. "Hey, I gotta go potty for a while, meet me at the assembly area, kay'?" Crystal said, and then she disappeared into the girls' room. I turned around the corner, and spotted Mark and Justin chatting secretly in the corner. I went closer to them and made a good choice of action : eavesdropped.
"So, you like...Lyz?"
"Yeah, well...I know you liked her last year, but I just found out that she was from my camp group 2 years ago and I really liked her then, and I still do, I still do. Will you please let me crush on her, without any guilt of a bad best friend?"
"Of course, man. Dude, you're my best friend. I mean, hey, I like your ex-crush Mandie..."
"Mandie? Cheap shot dude, she's the school bitch! Anyway, no hard feelings?"
"No...never. We're best friends. And we will be, forever."
And they both walked towards the assembly area. I blushed, beet red. They both liked me before? Yeah, sure I was pshyced, but at the same time, SHOCKED.
I picked up my slumped bag, and rushed forward, steeling in front of the both of them. I could swear I heard one of them calling me, but I pretended I didn't hear them and I pretended nothing had happened until the 31st of March, the day of the concert.
*31st March*
"Oh my god, Crystal!! WOOHOO!! The bunny's out!! The bunny's fricking out, damn it! LOOK!!" I screamed. Crystal looked, and the night flew by. I had not forgotten what I had heard a week ago, but I did during the concert. We were only 12, and probably the youngest Singaporeans in the full-house concert.
When I got home after the fantastic concert, I checked my cell phone to see if I missed any calls or left any messages unread during the concert.
Beep, beep! A message came into sight.
Hey, Lyz this is Mark. Message me back ASAP pls.
I replied, and he replied, and we had an interesting 'conversation', until he said something that hit me like an easter egg on a Christmas sunday.
Lyz, I like you. So much...will you give me a chance?
I dropped my cell phone on the floor. Was this true? Or...was this fake?
