Nothing Lasts Forever, chapter 2
"Mitosis is the process of making an exact copy of a cell. Each cell produced by mitosis has the diploid number of chromosomes." Droned Mr. Macleod.
"Hey Charlie do you get any of this stuff?" Billie whispered leaning over.
"I have no idea. But the bell's about to go!" I said a little too loudly, as Mr. Macleod looked up from the textbook he was reading from.
"Excuse me, Miss Price?"
"I said the bell's about to go, sir."
He rolled his eyes and went back to reading. Just then, the bell sounded for the end of school. I packed up my stuff and walked out alongside Billie Joe.
"I hate science. Mr. Macleod is so boring! He just goes on and on." I complained.
"And on and on" continued Billie. We both laughed as we walked towards our lockers. When we got there Maddy was already waiting for it with her bag.
"Hey guys!" she smiled.
"What the hell? How did you get here to quick?"
"I had P.E and we had a hip-hop dancing class. So I skipped."
"Oh, you bitch! Billie and I had to sit through two periods of science while you did nothing? That is so unfair." I said opening my locker.
"Yeah well, suck to you then." Maddy stuck her tongue out at us.
"Damn" sighed Billie.
I closed my locker and put my bag on my shoulder, waiting for Billie.
"What are you guys doing tonight?" Maddy asked as we began walking through the corridor.
"I have band practice." Stated Billie
"I'm doing nothing. Just staying at home with my stupid sister. How fun." I said sarcastically. "Why?"
"I don't know. Just asking."
"Right." I sighed.
"Hey you guys can come to band practice if you want. It's at my place today."
"Awesome! I'll be there." I was glad I wouldn't have to stay home. Kate would probably start complaining about Billie again.
"Nah, I can't. My cousin is visiting tonight. Mom said I couldn't go out." Maddy groaned.
"Oh no! Not Gavin!" I exclaimed. Gavin's Maddy's thirteen-year-old cousin and he's a total sleaze. He always tries to hit on me, even though I'm three years older than him!
"Yup, Gavin." Maddy laughed. "Well, I got to go. See you tomorrow guys!"
"See ya."
"Bye Maddy."
Maddy walked off down her street while Billie and I kept walking as we both lived on the same street.
"So are you coming straight to my house or are you going home first?" Billie asked as we turned a corner, entering our street.
"Umm I guess I'll take my bag home first."
"Okay then I'll see you soon!" Billie called walking down his driveway.
"Yeah, bye." I kept walking until I got to my house. I noticed there was a car in the neighbour's driveway. No one was ever home, so I just assumed nobody lived there.
I winced as I entered through the front door.
"Mom, are you cooking again?" I yelled out, receiving no answer. I tried not to breathe too much as I entered the kitchen, in an attempt not to send my lunch all over the kitchen and make the stench stronger. Whatever she was making, it couldn't be very good for us.
"Ah gross." I mumbled quietly so she wouldn't hear me.
"Oh hi Carol! How was your day?"
"Pretty shit" I answered.
"Oh honey I've told you not to use words like that. How do you expect to get anywhere in life using swear words all the time?" she whined.
"Whatever. I'm going to Billie's."
"Again? Carol, is there something going on between you two? You've been spending a lot of time with him."
"No! We're friend's mom! Besides, it's not just going to be the two of us. Mike and Al will be there too." I explained.
"Well, I still don't trust you carol. If you go, you take Kate with you."
"Are you serious?" I couldn't believe she'd just said that. Kate would be so annoying!
"Yes I'm serious. You two really need to start getting along. If you don't take her you're staying home. And that's that."
"Bitch." I muttered under my breath.
"What was that?"
"Nothing. I'll take her then. Happy?"
"Thank you, dear."
"Whatever mom. Bye."
I stormed out of the kitchen and upstairs to put my bag away, then walked back to the lounge room to find Kate sprawled across the couch in front of the television.
"Get up." I demanded.
"What? Why?"
"Mom said I have to take you to Billie's place." As soon as I'd said that, she shot up, her eyes wide.
"Oh my god. Just wait, I need to like, go upstairs. I'll be back in like a minute." She said excitedly, and rushed upstairs.
'Probably to put on more make-up.' I thought. Minutes later she emerged with a fresh face of make-up, proving me right.
"Let's go!" she yelled.
"Okay, okay." I said and opened the front door.
"Hey Charlie!" Billie's mum exclaimed as when she opened the door.
"Hey Ollie. This is my little sister Kate. Mom made me bring her along."
"Oh okay. Billie's up in his room.
"Thank you!" I said and walked towards the stairs.
"Oh my god. I'm like in Billie Joe's house!" Kate squealed.
"Shut up!" I groaned rolling my eyes. "You go through there and into the garage. I'll go get Billie."
"Aww fine."
I made my way up the stairs and to Billie's bedroom. I knocked on his door.
"Who is it?" I heard Billie ask inside.
"It's Charlie." I replied through the door.
"Oh okay come in." I opened the door to find Billie Joe sitting on the edge of his bed with his guitar on his lap.
"What you doing?" I asked as I walked over to his bed and sat down next to him.
"Just writing some new stuff." He said putting his guitar down next to his bed.
"Cool. Now I have some good news, and some bad news. Which do you want to hear first?"
"Umm, bad news."
"Okay. Mum made me bring Kate over. She's in your garage." I said. Billie scrunched up his nose when he heard this.
"You're so cute when you do that." I laughed, making him blush.
"So, what's the good news?"
"I'm here!" I smiled, raising my arms above my head.
"Yeah, I guess you could say that's good news." Billie Joe laughed.
"Excuse me?" I gasped, playfully hitting him on the head, causing him to laugh even more.
"Okay I guess we should go downstairs before Kate goes crazy due to lack of seeing you." I said getting up and walking to the door.
"She already is crazy."
"You got that right." We walked downstairs, Billie dreading seeing Kate again.
"Oh yeah I left my guitar upstairs. I'll meet you in the garage Charlie." Billie said and walked off. I slowly made my way to the garage, not really looking forward to having my sister hanging around. I walked in and found her fixing her make-up once again, using a window as a mirror.
"Freak." I muttered as I sat down on the sofa. When she heard me she spun around quickly.
"Oh. It's only you. Where's Billie Joe?"
"Getting his guitar. Why?" even though I already knew the answer to that.
"Just wondering." Just then the door opened, and in walked Billie Joe.
"Hi Billie Joe!" Kate squealed as soon as she saw him.
"Hey Kate." Billie Joe murmured. He put down his guitar and came to sit next to me on the sofa.
"So when are Mike and Al coming?" I asked while trying not to laugh at Kate, who is glaring at me.
"Umm they should be here soon." Billie replied.
The three of us sat there waiting for the others to arrive, Billie and I talking, with Kate just glaring at me because I was sitting with Billie. Crazy girl.
"Hey Charlie do you get any of this stuff?" Billie whispered leaning over.
