Falling for the Dying Girl, chapter 4
The next day I knew I had to go back. I had to see her again. I just knew deep down something was going to happen. Something very special.
"Mike, where are you off to? We have practice today" Billie asked, looking up from the T. V.
"I'm just off to have a coffee and meet up with someone." I lied, grabbing my jacket and car keys.
"Fine, whatever. You never want to do practice. We're never going to get very far if you keep this up," he says grumpily.
"Leave him alone Billie. He's most probably off to see a girl and seeing a girl has to come before practice. In my books anyway." Tre buts in. I just nod and quickly rush out the door before any more comments can be made.
I drive slowly down to the hospital wondering what I am going to say and do. I park the car in a space and take my ticket from the machine. I then make my way up through to reception.
"Hi, I'm here to see a patient" I state, walking up to the front desk where the same woman from last night sits. In the same suit.
"OK, can you sign here again please?" she says handing me a pen. I take it and sign it, then make my way to the ward Skye was on yesterday. I can feel my breathing increasing as the scent of disinfectant lingers around my nose, making me go light headed also.
I finally make it to the terminally ill ward and push open the doors. A lot of pale faces stare at me as I enter. I smile sweetly make, looking around for Skye. Then I see one bed in the corner. There's a bundle of sheets and a hunch in the middle of the bed, some hair sticking out on the pillow.
I cough slightly to signal my presence. I see her twitch and turn around to look at me. She looks at me with confusion at first, then her eyes light up and a smile spreads across her face.
"Hi." I say.
"Hey you."
"I just wanted to come and see how the patients were" I say, not wanting to make out that I only came to see her.
"Oh, OK," she says quietly. I notice her face is paler than yesterday and she looks slightly under weight.
"So, erm, how are you?" I ask, sitting down on one of the chairs.
"How do you think I am? Stuffed in a place like this." she moans.
"I'm sorry." I grumble. She sighs and closes her eyes. I sit and watch her for a while, her chest going up and down with her soft breathing.
"Quit looking at me." she suddenly says, opening her eyes.
"I'm sorry, I didn't notice you were looking at me." I feel my face go red.
"I like to watch people. And you're interesting to watch. You're kind of funny"
"Thanks. I think" I say, laughing.
We talk for what seems like forever after that, swapping jokes and getting to know each other. Sometimes we would just gaze at each other and smile.
"Well, I'll be off." I say, getting my coat and feeling in my pocket for the keys.
"OK, thanks for the company Mike."
"It's OK. I'll come and see you soon. I'll phone you." I say before leaving.
