I woke up Saturday morning lying in my bed. I couldn't wait to see Annie today. I stared at the ceiling, spacing out from happiness with a smile across my face when I heard someone coming down the stairs (yes, I live in Billie's basement).
"Hey, lover boy, wake up!" he jumped on my bed.
"I already was, stupid."
"Oh."
I got out of bed and went to eat some breakfast with Billie. I started making some coffee and Billie just grabbed a glass of milk and a donut.
"You don't wanna eat too much," he said between mouthfuls of donut, "Don't wanna surf on a full stomach."
"We're going surfing? Awesome!" I said. I pulled out a mug.
"Yah, we're going to the beach right by here, so it'll be a ride!" he finished his donut.
"Right here? I don't think we should eat anything them!" Which was true, we would probably end up puking because the road to the beach 'right here' was more like a walking mountain trail up and down hill, swerved, unpaved and very bumpy, just big enough to fit a car.
"Yah, on second thought, I shouldn't." he placed the other half of the donut on the counter. "And get ready and then we got to pick Tre and Zil up at his place and then the Princess."
"Anniem," I corrected.
"Yah, whatever."
"She hates it when people call her Princess," I warned him.
"Yah, I know."
He left me alone in the kitchen to get ready. I drank my coffee and went down to my room, the basement. I changed into my bathing suit trunks and a Clash T-shirt. I was looking for my board just as Billie came down.
"Man, we haven't surfed in so long I can't even find my board!" I was still fishing through the clutter of stuff.
"Don't sweat it, my brother helped me load the boards in the car last night."
"Thanks for telling me." I grabbed my backpack off the sofa.
"I got the towels and the rest of the stuff, so don't worry," Billie said as we walked out of the basement and out the door. We got into Billie's car; he got for his 17th birthday, some how. He drove as I was in shotgun. First stop, Tre's house.
After 20 minutes of driving, we pulled up into Tre's driveway. I realized no car was here. Strange, I thought, isn't Tre's dad here? Billie and I got out and walked to Tre's front door. Billie knocked on it three times but still no one came. He peeked through the window.
"No one's in."
"Ah, you know Tre, come on," I said as I started walking to the back yard.
"Where you going?"
"You'll see."
I walked around the house to a door in the back yard fence, realizing it was locked I started to climb over. Billie just watched me with a blank expression on his face as I landed on the grass on the other side. Just seeing how tall the fence was, Billie knew I just made it look easy. He just stood there looking up at the fence.
"Billie, come on!" I said to the other side of the fence.
"Are you crazy?" I heard him yell at me.
"It's not that hard!"
"Well, my legs aren't as long as yours!" he complained.
"They're not as sexy either!" I laughed at him.
"Oh just go get Tre will you!"
I walked away from the fence and opened Tre's back door, which was, not surprisingly, unlocked. 'One of these days they're going to get robbed,' I thought. As I walked into the kitchen cautiously, I heard some pitiful crying and screaming from Tre's room. As I walked into the living room someone tackled me, catching me by surprised. Of course I screamed like a girl and screamed even louder when the side of my face hit a table corner. I fell hard and fast against the floor, my tackler on top of me.
"Give it up Bitchard!"
Oh how lovely... the witch bitch seems a bit upset.
"Zil... you're... crushing me... " I gasped.
"Yeah I know. I'm not that stupid." She got off of me and helped me up.
"What the fuck happened to your face?" she said as she stared uncomfortably at my cheek.
"You," I said quietly, with a childish and-it-hurts-a-lot-look.
"I can fix that. Don't you worry." She grabbed my hand and dragged me into the kitchen. She started rummaging through Tre's fridge. My face was throbbing. I touched my cheek and I saw blood all over my hand.
"Uh, Zil... don't you think I should go to the bathroom first?" I asked.
"Nonsense." She pulled some bottles out of the fridge and set them on the counter. She was dressed in black trunks with a long sleeve fishing net top over a black 2-piece bathing suit tied at the neck. She always wears black. But then I realized something astonishing. She wasn't wearing eyeliner. I had never really realized how beautiful her eyes were. I didn't realize I was staring and saw me.
"What?" she said rudely at me.
"Uh, nothing, just... eh... I... never really realized how beautiful your eyes are," I suddenly felt a hot flash of embarrassment come over me. She just briefly seemed to smile at me but she kept her eyes on the mixer she was making from the contents of the bottles. I just kept staring at her in a thoughtful way. She saw me again.
"God, one day I don't wear eyeliner and everyone goes bezerk!" she said trying to sound pissed off. I said nothing but looked down. She then placed a glass in front of me. It looked kinda slimy and green. I just stared at it.
"Drink it," Zil finally told me.
"I don't even know what's in it!" I argued and it looked disgusting.
"Do you want to know what's in?"
"No! No, that's ok."I said quickly. Considering that it came out of Tre's fridge, I really didn't want to know.
"Where's Tre anyway?"
"Don't change the subject Dirnt! Drink it!" she ordered me like she was my mother.
"Alright, alright." I picked up the glass and gulped it down. It was sour and pungent and I almost chocked when I swallowed it. Eventually I got it down and started to felt tipsy. Out of nowhere Zil came up and quickly kissed me. I just blinked twice and stared at her.
"And that will ease the pain," She whispered at me. And just like that she walked out of the kitchen. I was still a little shocked. I then realized my face was no longer throbbing. I touched my cheek and the blood was gone. I was a little freaked out. How does she do that? I thought. Though I knew that if I'd asked she'd just say, "What do mean 'how do I do that?' I am witch!"
I walked into the living room and I still heard those pitiful screams and crying down the hall from what seemed like Tre's room. I walked down the hall and saw Zil standing outside the bathroom with an annoyed look on her face. I walked up to her and looked inside the bathroom, which, I saw Tre on his knees hugging the toilet bowl and crying like a five year old.
"Mr. Pickles!" he wailed. Zil saw the questioning look on my face.
"It was a stupid hamster!" she yelled him.
"Was not!" Tre sobbed.
"Tre, get over it! We have to go!" she scolded him.
"Can't you bring him up from the surer or something?" Tre pleaded.
"Tre, I'm a witch, not a magician!"
"What exactly happened?" I asked uncertain.
"Well, Mr. Pickles... " Zil began to explain.
"ZILPHA ACCIDENLTY FLUSHED HIM DOWN THE TOILET!" Tre screamed.
"YOU WHAT!?"I turned to Zilpha in shock.
"Hey, I didn't know he was there until I pulled my pants up, I saw him, I screamed, he fell into the toilet and I flushed him! There!" she yelled angrily. I couldn't believe it. Tre's pet rebel hamster was finally flushed down the toilet.
"Come on, Tre. I promise when we get back we'll give Mr. Pickles a funeral." Zil tried to convince him.
"Oh yeah and we're going surfing," I added. All the sudden Tre stopped wailing and thought for second.
"Ok."
As the three of us walked out the front door, I saw Billie lying across the hood of his car.
"What took you so long?" he complained as he got up.
"Well, Zilpha tackled me and then we had to convince Tre to get over Mr. Pickles."
"Over?"
"Zil accidentally flushed him down the toilet!" Tre wailed like a little kid. Apparently he was taking every chance he could get to accuse Zil.
"She what?" Billie was amazed as well. Zil grumbled.
"Don't we have to pick up your lovely... whatserface?" she asked changing the subject.
"Oh yeah, we have to pick up Annie! I forgot," Billie said.
"Well, we better get moving then, shouldn't we?"
We started loading up Tre and Zil's Stuff and boards in the car and as we all got into Billie stuffed car, Tre sat in shotgun and I sat in the back next to Zil a bit crammed. Halfway to Annie's place Billie realized she wasn't wearing eyeliner. He got the same response as I did. As Tre put on the radio, I took the opportunity to ask Zil something that had been nagging me. I hesitated at first as she flipped the pages of a magazine.
"Yeah..." she said still flipping though the magazine. I felt like an idiot, she didn't even look up from the magazine.
"Um, you know... when you... kissed me... "
"Yeah, what about it? I told you it was to ease the pain." She was looking at a magazine article.
"Was that true?"
She looked up at me from the magazine with a provocative stare for a few seconds.
"Do really think I would do that out of pleasure?" she suddenly asked me. She spoke as if I was questioning her authority.
"I... I don't know... I was just... wondering... if... " I stumbled, I didn't know what to say. She stared at me with those harshly beautiful eyes of hers.
"Would you?" she suddenly asked.
"What?" I asked shocked.
"Would you-" she was cut off by Tre, who announced we were here. She ignored me as if nothing as Billie went to go get Annie. I suddenly felt this tension between us and I didn't like it. I kept thinking over and over in my head, I couldn't have feelings for Zilpha. Yet I felt a stirring in my gut. This couldn't be happening. Not now.
"Hey, lover boy, wake up!" he jumped on my bed.
"I already was, stupid."
"Oh."
