When the Sun shines but you're left in the cold., chapter 1

It was a lovely sunny day. Every kid in the neighbour hood was either out on their bikes, kicking a ball around or playing some random made-up game as kids do.

The only kid that wasn't outside was little nine-year-old Lucy. She had to clean the house while her mum went out to get necessaries. She left the house at nine in the morning and it was now three in the afternoon.
Lucy was starting to get worried her mum was never late. She decided that once she'd finished dusting she would go out and look for her.

No need, her mum came home. She came home a mess. Her hair, which was usually neatly tied up in a ponytail, was loose and all over her face, her make-up was all smudged and running down her face and she had a distinct stink of fags and beer around her.
"Mummy what happened?" Lucy asked quietly.
"Run Lucy."
"Why should I run?" she queried.
"Just do as I say Hun," her mother replied.
"But Mummy I don't understand, why do I need to run? When do I come back?"
"You don't."
"Why not? Mummy tell me," Lucy pleaded.
Her mother sighed, "Your fathers coming."
Lucy eyes widened, when her father had been home he was an alcoholic and violent.
She kissed her mum, "I love you loads mummy."

Lucy ran out the door and over her garden fence and the neighbours. She kept running and climbing until she came to the junkyard fence. If she lost her footing she would slip and be killed either by the impact of the fall or by the vicious dogs on the other side.

She got up all right, now just do get down. She lowered her foot down but her foot slipped and she was flat on her face.
"Oh no," she whispered.
Her body was flooded with pain and tears were pouring down her face.

A small, dark haired boy named Jason had been following Lucy down the road and saw everything. He ran up to the fence to help her.
"Don't panic I'll get you out of there," he said.
Jason pushed against a section of the fence and it lifted up.
"You have to crawl across the ground to get out, ok?" Jason kindly said.
"Ok, I'll try." Lucy dragged herself along the ground cutting her knees on bits of stone.
"That's it just a few more metres Lucy."
She gathered up all the strength in her arms and dragged herself through the opening.
"Thanks," she whispered.
"It's alright Lucy," Jason replied.
"But how did you know my name?"
