Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, chapter 1
*In the bus with Ty and the design team*
"Ok. Last year Carly White died of cancer. When her husband and two kids found out they were devastated. They were forced to move into a small trailer on land that belongs to a family friend. So basically the White family are living in a old rundown mobile home. They barely can afford rent and to make matters worse, the eldest was diagnosed with knee cancer. The father is in a difficult position. He needs to remodel the house and work extra hours to pay off the medical bills. Lets take a look at the tape," Tye said turning on the T.V.
"Hi ABC! We are the White family and we want you to give us a new home!" The White family said from the T.V.
A man, around 30, was standing behind two young girls. The one on the right had dark brown hair that came down to her shoulders. She was supported up by crutches, her right leg was in a purple cast. She was wearing a My Chemical Romance shirt and black shorts, she also had round glasses.
The girl standing next to her had long brown hair, the same brown eyes and she was wearing a plain pink shirt and dark blue jeans. Like her sister, she had round glasses.
The man was wearing a blue shirt and a black hat. He also had round glasses, his right hand was on the girl in the pink shirt's shoulder.
"Hi, I'm Kali and I'm fourteen," said the girl with the broken leg.
"Hi, I'm Mel and I'm twelve," said the girl next to her.
"Hi, I'm Fred and I'm their dad."
"Last year my wife died of cancer. Because we had spent so much money to make her better we had to move here," he waved his hand behind him. "It wasn't bad at first but a storm came a few weeks ago and wiped out the right side of the house. Then we found out that Kali had knee cancer. After that she had to be taken to the hospital several times a week. It has been hard on us to be able to live here and have pay off the money for all of Kali's operations."
"So, please, ABC. give us a new home to come to." they all said in unison.
Ty turned off the T.V. and looked around at the design team.
"As you can tell they are having a difficult time. So what do you say?"
"1,2,3, LET"S DO IIIIIITTTTT!" they yelled in unison.
*Kali's P.O.V.*
"Goooooood Morning, Jacksonville!" the radio said."Helena Freedo, here with the morning spin. It's 6:30. So wake up and smell the coffee. It's 50 degrees out, clear skies, and the perfect day to go to the beach. First song on the morning spin is 'Grilz' by Nelly."
'I hate this song!' I thought. 'It is so stupid. Well I'd better get ready to go to school. I don't want to be late because I can't walk again. That was so embarrassing.'
I sat up in my bed and looked around my room. It was painted white and posters were hung everywhere. Well, except on my sister's half of the room. Her side was plain and boring. I really hated sharing a room with her. She can be very bossy sometimes. Like yesterday she wouldn't stop yelling at me to clean my half of the room.
Flashback
"You need to clean your part of the room. I can't stand it being messy," Mel yelled at me.
"In case you haven't noticed, I am a little impaired right now. If I didn't have this dumb cast on then I would be glad to clean. But for now deal with it," I said calmly.
"This is all your fault! I bet you anything that you gave mom cancer! It's your fault that she is dead!"
"1. It is not my fault! 2. Cancer is not contagious. 3. Mom gave me cancer. I didn't give it to her." I said.
"Yeah right. I thought you said that you can't catch it."
"I did. I didn't catch it from her. I inherited it. Your too young you wouldn't understand," I said.
"Whatever. But when you get that cast off you are cleaning your room. No help," she said.
End flashback.
I swung my legs off the bed and grabbed my crutches and walked out of the room. I walked down the hall and into the kitchen. My dad and sister was there.
"Mel told me about the fight you two had yesterday," my dad started.
'Oh no. not a long lecture again.' I thought as I got an apple from the counter.
"I talked with her and I told her how it is not your fault that you have to wear that cast because of your cancer."
"Good. Does that mean she will stop telling me that I killed mom?" I replied knowing that this would get her into trouble.
"Yes."
"Sorry," Mel said.
"Whatever," I said and walked back into our room.
I closed the door with my crutch and I walked over to the closet to find something to wear. As I was doing this, I sang along to St. Jimmy that was playing on the radio.
I found my favorite black shorts and Guns N' Roses shirt. I changed, witch took awhile and walked back into the living room and turned the T.V. on to watch the news.
At seven I heard a car outside but didn't think anything of it. Probably just the neighbors.
"Gooooooooooood Mooooorning White family." someone yelled from outside.
"What the heck?" I said and grabbed my crutches to check it out.
When I opened the door I was surprised to see Ty Pennington standing in my front yard with a mega-phone. I walked out and stared at them in disbelief.
"Oh my god! It's Ty!" Mel yelled from the porch and ran past me a gave him a hug.
Page came over and hugged me. Well, I could only use one arm because my other one was holing me up.
I looked around at the rest of the team. Ed, Paul, Page, Ty, and Edwardo were there. I was so thankful that they came.
"Thank you so much," my dad said.
"No prob. Nom, let's take a look around," Ty said.
"So, basically, a huge storm came a feww weeks ago and took out the right side of the house?" Page asked.
"Yup, so now I share a room with Mel," I said shrugging. "Luckily, I was able to save most of my things."
Page walked with me to the room I shared with my sister. Her expression when she walked in was priceless.
"What bed is your's?" she asked.
"That one," I said pointing to the bed with black sheets.
"So you like Green Day, M.C.R., Eminem and Harry Potter?" she asked looking at the posters.
"Yeah, my favorite is Green Day. As you can tell, I have many posters of them," I said.
"And C.D.'s," she added.
"Yeah, I have everyone 'cept American Idiot and International Superhits," I replied.
"What do you want to be when you grow up?" asked Page.
"Be an author. I love to read. Well, I never used to, but I am now limited to things so..."
"What's your favorite book?"
"The Harry Potter series. I have them memorized."
"Cool, so if you could have a theme to your room what would it be?"
"I don't know. I guess it would be cool to have a red room with black stares here and there."
We walked back into the living room and met the rest of the team. They told us to pack our bags because we were spending a week at Disney Land.
I was packed in a few minutes. I took all of my C.D.'s and my walk-man.
I got into the Limo and sat on the black leather seats.
"Hey, you should stretch out. You won't be moving awhile on the plane," my dad advised.
As I stretched out, I felt the Limo lurch forward.
*At the Airport*
"Hurry up!" Mel yelled sprinting towards Gate 34.
"I'm trying! You try running with a cast on your leg and crutches!" I yelled back to her.
We got the the gate just in time. They were about to close it off, but let us through because technically we made it on time.
I felt like a handicapped person because I could not make it up the stairs to get in the plane. So, security had to carry me up. I was so embarrassed, yet glad they were nice enough to help me. Once on the plane, we searched for our seats. After about ten minutes of searching we found them. We were in the back row.
My dad said I could have the isle seat because I was deathly scared of heights. I had to close my eyes when I was carried up the stairs because I thought I was going to fall.
I put my crutches on the ground next to my seat. I made sure that no one would trip over them. Then, I pulled out my favorite book: Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. I opened it to my the page marked with my special edition Harry Potter book mark, page 59. I was not that far in it because I had just started it last night at midnight.
"Your reading that again?" Mel asked stressing the word 'again'.
"No, I am just staring at the words not taking anything in," I replied sarcastically.
"What is it now, like the tenth time you have read that book?"
"For your information, Miss. I-Know-Everything, It is the twentieth time."
"Hey, enough," my dad said because Mel was about to reply.
Throughout the whole plane ride it was silent between us. I was absorbed in reading my book, Mel was watching a DVD, and my dad was reading a magazine. The only time we talked was when we were about to land and my dad was asking us if we were excited or not. Of course, we were. I mean, who wouldn't be? We were going to Disney land. I had always wanted to go there.
