Wide open Spaces, chapter 1

Who doesn't know what I'm talking about?
Who's never left home, who's never struck out?

Sydney stepped out of the bedraggled van and carefully examined her surroundings, a smile played on the edge of her lips as she realised where she was.

It takes the shape of a place out west,
But what it holds for her, she hasn't yet guessed.

Her short auburn hair was pulled back into two messy ponytails, and a cowboy hat occupied most of her head. Sydney's legs were hardly visable under large leather chaps, where of which two cowboy boots stuck out, both appearing to have large heals. A huge grin took hold of her as she slowly walked to unload her horse from the van.

Meanwhile...

Billie Joe walked the streets in search of a place to stay for the night, he had been kicked out of the backseat of a car he had been staying in for a few weeks. His faded black hair glowed gold around the edges in the Californian sun. As he approached the top of a large hill over looking alot of grassland and moorland, he stood and looked out into the distance.

Sydney mounted her pinto mustang; Billy. He was a rather large, hardy wild horse of the North American plains. She had caught and tamed him herself. She gave one last wave to her parents, and rode off into the distant grassland.

She traveled this road as a child
Wide-eyed and grinning, she never tired
But now she won't be coming back with the rest
If these are life's lessons, she'll take this test

Sydney had dreamed of this moment for so long, now it was here, she wasnt sure what she was going to do. She was now homeless. She had to find her own path. She stopped for a moment; to gather her thoughts, then shook them off and carried on with her journey.

She needs wide open spaces
Room to make her big mistakes

As she rode, Sydney recalled all the memories she'd had with her, now past, family and friends, memories that would perhaps haunt her for the rest of her life. What If's kept going through her head, but she managed to convince herself this was for the best. She needed to make new friends, new realationships, to be a woman. Sydney was now '19 years young', as she described it.

She needs new faces
She knows the highest stakes

Billie Joe fell to his knees and questioned every thought he had in his head, how did I end up like this? was the big one. There was no one in the entire world that could answer this question, not one single soul. Lyrics ran through his head, lyrics to Wonderwall, he had heard it on a window cleaner's radio a week before. Today was gonna be the day, but they'll never throw it back to you. By now you should've somehow realized what you're not to do.
He shed a single tear, followed by another. He was fucked, and he knew it. Backbeat, the word is on the street that the fire in your heart is out. I'm sure you've heard it all before, but you never really had a doubt. His eyes were pained and tearstained, they once were electric green, but had now faded to gray.

Sydney stampeded up a moorland hill attempting to race an eagle, with not much luck, she let out a loud, heartily laugh.

Billie Joe quickly jumped up to look at the sudden disturbance. Squinting into the sunlight, he was quick to notice the silhouette of a horse and rider, charging toward him.

Sydney noticed the shabby man in the distance, and slowed down as she got nearer. Billie Joe was surprised at how pretty the girl looking down at him was, he suddenly realized he was staring and looked away with a dazed expression.

"Howdy," the girl exlaimed with a smile, she threw herself to the ground and held her hand out to Billie Joe. He looked unsure, but shook it anyway. A few moments of silence passed, in which they stole glances of each other, and then, "I'm Sydney." Billie nodded a little and looked confused, as if wondering why anyone would actually talk to him. She waited a few seconds, expecting an answer. When none came, she asked "Whats your name?"

"Billie." the short, black haired man mumbled. He hated people. All they were to him was bad news. He wanted Sydney to go, but it didnt look like she was planning to go anywhere.
