Mistakes Worth Making, chapter 4
I shudder when I feel his mouth on my neck placing soft, wet kisses on the skin there. I wonder if I am dreaming or not because it feels very real.
"What are you doing?" I finally ask when I realize that I am not asleep.
"Kissing you," he whispers. "Do you want me to stop?" he asks as I turn to face him again.
"Well no..." He takes this as a notion to continue and does so by slipping his tongue passed my lips.
"Billie, you're married," I remind him as I point to the gold wedding band on his left ring finger.
"She'll never know," he assures me with a sinful smirk on his face. He slips the ring off of his finger and places it on the nightstand beside my bed.
"That doesn't make you any less married," I laugh. "You know that, right?"
"Yes I know that," he smiles. "Just don't let me forget to put it back on later."
God, why does he have to be so damn good looking? The streetlight that is shining through the window that I so harshly cursed so many times before is now illuminating his face making him almost irresistible. He raises himself up so that he is resting on his elbows and kisses me again, but I pull away.
After several minutes of mentally arguing with myself about the current situation, I decide that a little bit of kissing won't hurt anyone too much. I tell him to keep going with full intention of not taking things any further than this.
His kisses are deep, passionate, and aren't the slightest bit rushed...something that I had never before experienced with Pete or anyone else for that matter. He positions himself so that he is halfway laying on top of me. He slides his right hand up the black tank-top I am wearing and caresses the skin beneath as he kisses my neck and shoulders.
He breaks our kiss long enough to slip the shirt over my head before discarding it on the floor. Before I realize it, all of my clothes have been removed and we have gone much further than I had intended to go. He starts to get up off of the bed, but I pull him back towards me.
"Where do you think you're going?" I ask. "You've already gone incredibly too far...it's a little late to be having doubts now."
"You think?" he laughs. "I'll be right back."
He doesn't go too far...he doesn't even leave the bed. He just grabs the pants from the end of the bed that he had taken off when he had come into the room. I hear him fumbling around before returning with a condom.
"I'm glad you remembered that...it was the last thing on my mind," I laugh.
"Well, I wasn't gonna stop to get it..." he says. "But I'm guessing your boyfriend might notice if you are pregnant."
"Yeah, he would really be mad...especially since he is 'too busy' to have sex," I say.
--
"Billie?" I whisper into the darkness so I don't wake him up if he is asleep. "Are you awake?"
"Hmm? Yeah, I'm awake," I hear him mumble.
"Do you do this a lot?" I ask as I run my finger over Adrienne's name on his arm. "You know, cheat on your wife."
"That was the first time," he says as he pulls me closer to him. "Why?"
"Just wondering..." I say as I rest my head on his shoulder. "Okay...so you obviously planned this or wanted something to happen between us because condoms don't just magically appear in your pocket when you need them..."
"Yeah," he laughs. "That would be awesome, though."
"I'm really sorry...I shouldn't have..." I pause. "I should have made you stop...or I just should have slept on the couch and let you sleep in here."
"Wait, what?" he asks as he sits up. "You should feel bad for sleeping with me, well unless you do for cheating on your boyfriend...but it was my choice, so I should have been the one to stop...but I didn't want to and I don't regret anything that we did."
"Are you sure?" I ask.
"Yes...I wasn't at first, but when I met you at Starbucks I was," he says. "And the reason I was late earlier was because I packed up all of my stuff and I was going to the airport, but I changed my mind at the last minute. I just couldn't leave and not meet up with you like we had planned."
"Well I'm really glad you changed your mind," I tell him. "I hate sleeping alone anyway...even when I'm not alone it seems like I am," I sigh.
"I'm happy I did, too..." he whispers. "I'd be trying to go to sleep on a plane if I had left...and that's no way to sleep," he laughs. "Do you not like your boyfriend or something?"
"No...I really don't," I sigh. "I'm not really sure why we are still dating..."
"Then why don't you leave him? You're too pretty to be unhappy," he says as he kisses me on the forehead.
"Thanks...I guess," I laugh. "But I don't know...I don't really like change at all and I guess I just got comfortable...not with the lifestyle, but with the security..."
"Oh," he says. "Where did you two meet?"
"I was his 'personal assistant' while I was going to school because he was really busy...he was working as an intern and at his dad's law firm," I tell him. "So we were together a lot while he was at work and then afterwards...and then we started sleeping together."
"Nice...sleeping with the boss," he laughs. "Did that get you a promotion?"
"Actually no...I finished college and started working a real job...but he lets me live in this nice apartment with him which is a real treat," I say sarcastically.
"I can't believe that I don't already fucking know this...but what is it that you do?" he asks.
"I'm in real estate," I tell him. "So if you ever need to sell your house, you know where to find me."
Sometime during the early morning hours we finally fall asleep. We wake up at eleven and Billie has missed his flight since it was supposed to be taking off at ten.
"When did you tell Adrienne you would be back at home?" I ask as we get out of bed.
"I told her that I didn't know what time my flight would be but I would be there sometime today," he says. "I think there is another flight at one or something so don't worry about it."
After our shower together, Billie gets ready to go get his bags from his hotel that he didn't spend much time at before heading to the airport. We stand at the door as he slips his shoes on his feet and I find myself wondering once again if this will be the last time I will see him. He already got what he wanted so there is no way of knowing whether or not he will have a reason to come back.
"So was this a one-time thing or will you be coming back soon?" I finally ask as he opens the door to leave.
"I'll be back," he says. "I don't know when it will be, but I definitely will."
"Good," I say before I hug and kiss him goodbye.
--
"Taryn...I think I did something really bad," I say as we both sit down at the kitchen table.
"What? Did you cheat on Pete or something?" she carelessly asks as she sips her coffee.
"Yes, actually I did," I admit. "But that's not the bad part."
"Well, duh...I knew that wasn't the bad part because Pete is not for you, honey..." she laughs. "So, what is the bad part?"
"Uh...well...I slept with someone who is married...happily married," I say as I put my head down on the table.
"Oh," she says now sounding very engrossed in the conversation. "Interesting..."
"Oh..." I say as I raise my head off the tabletop. "Did I mention that he is the father of her two children?"
"You home-wrecking whore," she laughs. "I'm only kidding...obviously if he was with you, then he wasn't happy about something with her."
I think she is only trying to make me feel better about what I did...but then again, this is her game and she does this kind of thing all the time. I can tell that she is desperately trying to refrain from asking questions about what we did, who he is, and blah, blah, blah. I knew that she wouldn't be able to hold off on it for long and I was right.
"So who is this guy? Is he hot?" she finally asks.
"Yes he is hot...and you wouldn't believe me if I told you who it was," I laugh. "Is there anything else you would like to know?"
"Oh come on..." she pleads. "I'll believe you...did you meet him on your trip to California?"
"Yes I did," I tell her. "It was...I really can't tell you right now."
I open my mouth to say something else as I hear a knock on the door. I assume that it is Billie because he had just left about ten minutes before. I am shocked to see that it is Pete returning home early from Chicago.
I feel sick at my stomach when I realize how close I had come to being caught red-handed. I look over at Taryn and she has a stunned look plastered on her face.
"I thought you weren't coming back until Tuesday..." I say as he gets comfortable on the couch.
"Well I came home early," he says rudely. "Is that ok?"
"Yeah, I was just asking..." I say. "I'm going to take a shower...Taryn come with me."
"You look like you just had a shower," Pete says as Taryn and I walk towards the bedroom.
She gets up and follows me into the bathroom. Once we are a safe distance from Pete's ears, I turn on the water and sit on the side of the bathtub. Taryn sits down on the tiled floor and encourages me to tell her more about my little mess.
"So when did this guy leave?" she asks as she grabs a bottle of acetone and starts removing the polish from her toes. "And you can go ahead and get in the shower...I've seen it all before," she laughs.
"Twenty minutes ago," I say ignoring her last comment. "Oh my god...you have no idea how fast my heart is beating right now."
"You almost got so busted," she laughs. "What do you think he would have done if he came home to find you and whoever the hell it was together?"
"I don't even know...but I do know that I won't be doing that anymore," I sigh. "That was just way too close for comfort."
"Liar..." she smirks. "It's not over and you fucking know it," she laughs.
"Yeah, yeah..." I say as I turn off the faucet and go back into the living room with Pete.
--
I am sitting at the computer trying to get some work done when my cell phone starts vibrating on the desk. I pick it up to see that it is Billie calling and since Pete is taking a nap I decided to answer it.
"Hey," I say as I shut my laptop. "Did you make it home yet?"
"Yeah...a few hours ago," he says. "I miss you already."
"I miss you, too..." I say as I wonder when I will see him again.
"Guess what you let me forget..." he says.
"Oh fuck..." I mutter when I remember that his wedding ring is on the nightstand by the bed that Pete is sleeping in. "Sorry...I meant to remind you, but you left in such a rush this morning."
"Well I completely forgot about it...Adrienne pointed it out that I didn't have it on earlier," he says.
"Oh my god," I gasp. "What?"
"What are you doing?" I finally ask when I realize that I am not asleep.
"Kissing you," he whispers. "Do you want me to stop?" he asks as I turn to face him again.
