Serendipity Girl, chapter 1

I bike home after spending my day with my friend Lily at the city swimming pool. I enter the house and toss my wet towel into the washroom.
"Anyone home?" I call through the house as I head to the kitchen to get a popsicle.
"I'm in here." I hear my mom say from the living room. I pluck a purple popsicle out of the freezer and head into the living room where my mom is crying.
"What's wrong mom?"
"My grandmother died in hospital last night." She says as she wipes her eyes.
"The one in Washington?" she nods. Her grandmother practically raised her as a kid, so they were very close.
"I just got off the phone with my uncle and he said the funeral is in two days." I completely forgot about the popsicle in my hand. "It was her time I guess, she was ninety-three years old."

The next day Mom, Dad and I find ourselves driving up to Washington state. I only met this woman five or six times, I guess the distance was too great to see her more often. She never really seemed all that interesting but she raised my mom so I guess that's enough for me to come along apposed to staying behind in Oakland with my cousin.

This was the first funeral I've ever been to. I'm glad it's closed casket because I think I'd freak out if I saw the corpse lying there, no matter how much it looked like she's sleeping. My mother didn't cry all that much except when they lowered the coffin into the ground. I guess she'd been expecting it to happen, my great-grandmother had been in the hospital for a good six months.

Mom and Dad are currently talking to her lawyer about the will, so I get to stay in the hotel room and watch TV. Mom comes into the room a little teary eyed.
"She left us money for a new house."
"So are we going to move?" I ask cautiously.
"It's in her final wishes, she said she wanted us to move into a nice new house." My mom says smiling a little. "It's so like her, she said in the will she wanted us to enjoy what she's left." I stand up and go to hug my mother as tears trickle down her face.
"Where's dad?" I mumble.
"He went to get something for supper, probably burgers or something." My mom says as she let's go of me.
