Serendipity Girl, chapter 10

"You have to come with me!" Lil practically yells through the phone.

"Why? He's your boyfriend."

"But I don't want to sit in the stands alone."

"Oh jeez, fine, what time?"

"Two."

"Okay, I'll meet you at the bus station," I mumble as I hang up the phone.

I head out the front door to see Joey loading his soccer bag into his car.
"Hey you." he says as I go up to him, "where you headed?"

"Lil is dragging me to Matt's skateboarding competition."

"I'd go with you, but I have practice," he says shrugging, "I'll give you a lift though."

"Thanks," I say as we get into the car.

It's not long before we get to the bus station.

"Thanks for the lift," I say as I lean forward to kiss Joey.

"No problem, umm what time does the competition end?"

"Around four thirty, then Lil said something about some sort of victory party."

"Okay, my practice might finish early today."

"Great." I kiss him once more before getting out of the car.

"Ana! Ana!" Lil yells waving to me. I hurry over to her to see our bus is already there. "What took you so long?" we take our seats on the bus.

"Joey drove me."

"Then shouldn't you have been here faster?"

"We sat in the car chatting a while."

"Just chatting?" Lil asks amused as the bus starts up.

"You don't trust me to play nice with the boys?"

"No, and I don't think Billie Joe and Adie should either." I laugh. "Not to mention your parents; so naïve."

"You're being a real fruitcake, do you know that?"

"Yes, yes I do."

We sit in silence for a while because after being called a fruitcake there's nothing you can really say.

"Oh! Oh! Ding the dinger!" Lil says pointing at the red button to signal the bus to stop. I press it as I roll my eyes at her terminology. We get off the bus and walk about a block to get to the park where the competition is being held.

"So where's lover boy?" I ask as we make our way through the crowd.

"There!" she exclaims pointing to one of the ramps where people are practicing. He sees us, well Lil anyway and comes to us.

"Hey, you made it," he says happily as he embraces Lil. "I have to go warm up, kay?"

"Yeah, good luck babe," she says kissing him quickly before he goes off.

"Babe? You're calling him babe now?" I tease as we head to the spectator stands.

"Shut-up."

"No, you've gone from calling him Matthew, to Matt and now babe."

"What about you and Joey, you call him babe and shit like that."

"Well, I don't get all embarrassed when my friend bugs me about it!" I exclaim as we take out seats on the bench.

"Yeah whatever, where is Joey anyway?"

"Soccer practice, he'll be here later."

"He better, don't like this whole third wheel thing," she mumbles as the competitors step off the ramps because the competition is beginning.

"Then why the hell did you bring me along."

"I just want you here to watch with me, but then."

"Yeah, yeah I get it," I say rolling my eyes.

We sit in more less silence for most of the competition until Matt takes his place at one end of the ramp. That's what Lil stands up and starts cheering.

"You fruit loop sit down!" I hiss, realizing she's looking like an idiot.

"Oh fine," she mumbles. She watches his entire routine at the edge of her seat. Then suddenly someone chucks something at the ramp and Matt falls head first.

"Oh my god!" she practically screams, "Is he alright?" I stand up to see, but he isn't moving.

"He's not moving," I say as she pushes past me to the competing area. I stay where I am, and see Lil's lover-boy sit up and take off his cracked helmet, just as Lil fights her way past the authority. The two of them make their way to the first aid tent.

"Hey, what's going on?" a familiar voice asks from behind me.

"Some moron chucked something onto the ramp when Matt was competing and well he hit his head."

"Is he alright?" Joey asks taking the seat next to me.

"I don't know, Lil went with him."

"I'm going to go check it out," he says as I follow behind him to the first aid tent.

We find Lil standing at the entry trying to look in.

"What's going on?" Joey asks seriously.

"They won't let me in."

"Excuse me," Joey says stopping one of the first aid specialists.

"Yes."

"Matthew Nesser got injured during his competition, is he alright?"

"Umm, brown hair?"

"Yeah."

"Well he has a concussion, we called an ambulance."

"An ambulance?!"

"I'm sorry but unless you're family."

"I'm his cousin."

"Immediate family," she says as she shoos us away. "Don't worry we already called his parents.

Just then an ambulance pulls up to the tent and we see Matt being pulled out on a stretcher.

"Are we going to the hospital?" I ask glancing from Lil to Joey.

"Uh, uh yeah," Joey stutters.

"You!" Lil calls out to one of the paramedics, "What hospital are you talking him too?!"

"Saint Gabriel's."

"Let's go," I say motioning towards the parking lot. We start of speed walking to Joey's car but end up sprinting.

We get into the car and we barely have time to buckle our seat belts before Joey has already started driving out of the parking lot.

"Where exactly is Saint Gabriel's?" he mutters.

"It's near the skating rink," Lil says, she should know, it's minutes away from her house.

"Not sure where that is either."

"Turn left here," I say realizing Lil's directions are getting us no where. "Okay, now turn right at the next corner." Joey follows my directions until we wind up on the right street.

"I see it now," he mumbles as we head up the street.

We walk across the parking lot and we run into Matt's parents on the way in.
"Do you know what happened?" his mother asks nearly frantic.

"Someone chucked something on the ramp and he tried to dodge it and ended up falling head first," Lil explains. She puts her hand over her mouth.

"Don't worry, he was still conscious," I add in quickly. Matt's father says something under his breath something along the lines of "some people can be such morons."

We get to Matt's room when a nurse stops us and tells us only two people can see him at a time. So we wait in the hallway while his parents went. We waited about fifteen minutes before Matt was released with only a sprained ankle and a mild concussion. Lil practically pounced him when he came out of the room. I was tempted to say easy there Lil, his parents are right there.

We left the hospital and Lil went with Matt back to his house.

"Close call." I say as Joey and I get into the car.

"Yeah, wouldn't be the first time."

"What?"

"This happened before, a couple of years ago. People have issues that his father was a pro skater."

"That's stupid, he has the talent it's not like celebrity kids who get a free ride." As I say this I realize who I'm talking to. No matter how hard his band wants to make it on their own, they'll always get a free ride because of Joey and Luke. Joey picks up that I'm feeling embarrassed.

"I don't want to pursue a career as a musician," he says chuckling.

"Oh okay."

"I saw you went a bit awkward there."
