Serendipity Girl, chapter 2
A few weeks later the moving van comes and goes from our house. I still haven't seen where we're moving. All I know is that we're staying in the Oakland area so I can continue to go to the same high school. My mom also said that the house has a pool, so that's pretty awesome; I won't always have to go to the city pool where kids pee in the water. I check all the rooms once more to make sure we got everything.
"That's everything!" I call across the house.
"Okay let's go." My mom says as she locks up the front door. My dad is taking the final boxes to the house in the U-Haul truck so Mom and I take the car.
"Where are we?" I ask quizzically as my mom slows down in a neighborhood with fairly large houses.
"This is our new neighborhood."
"The houses are sort of big." I say looking out the window. "How much money did she leave you?"
"Well I'm guessing a house in this price range is what she had in mind of a nice house." My mom says as she pulls into a driveway. I step out of the car to get a good look at my new home.
"This house is fucking huge."
"Language." Mom says in a warning tone. "Yes, I guess it's huge, but if you look around, it's the smallest one on the street."
"True." I say glancing around.
I help my dad move the final boxes into the house.
"Okay kid, that's everything." He says as he closes up the back of the U-Haul truck. "We'll return the truck and grab a pizza or something." My mom says as she gets into her car. I decide it could be pretty fun to ride around in a truck so I go with my dad. We get to the U-Haul place and my dad returns the truck. My mom comes to pick us up and she'd already picked up the pizza so her car smelt like melted cheese and pepperoni.
Later that week I decide to take a swim, having our own pool is so great. I pull on my blue tank-ini and head toward the patio door.
"You'll have to go around; I just washed the floor there." My mom says warningly. I head back towards the front door.
As I go to the gate I get sprayed with a blast of water from the guys next door who were apparently washing the car.
"Sorry!" the older one says as he quickly shuts off the hose.
"It's okay." I say pushing my hair of my face. "Luckily I'm in a bathing suit."
"Smooth move Joe." The younger guy says as he receives a blast of water in the face from his older brother.
"See ya around." I say as I head into my backyard.
"See ya!" the younger one says obnoxiously.
I spend a good half hour swimming before my mom calls to me from the window.
"Anna, get out of the pool. I'm going out and I don't like the idea of you swimming alone."
"You're paranoid!" I yell back as I get out of the pool anyway. I wrap my towel around my waist and head back to the front door.
"You look familiar you know." The older brother from before says to me.
"Yeah, I'm the girl you sprayed with water."
"No, from before that." He says as he comes over to my yard.
"Well my name's Anna. Does it ring a bell?"
"Not really, what school do you go to?"
"Aubrey High." I say casually.
"Ahh that's why, I there too. My name's Joseph." He says casually, "What grade are you in?"
"I'm going to start grade eleven. You?"
"I just finished grade eleven."
"That's cool." I say as I'm about to head into the house.
"Wait, umm would you like to go to The Guitar Temple with me, I was just about to go to buy some new strings."
"Sure," I say casually, "Just let me get changed."
"Okay." He says as he walks back to his house.
"Okay, I'm leaving now." My mother says gathering her purse as she heads out the door.
"Bye." I say as the phone starts to ring.
"Get that please." She calls to me as she shuts the door. I pick up the phone.
"Hellooo." I trail off.
"Anna!"
"Hey Lil."
"How's the new neighborhood."
"REALLY HOT NEIGHBOR!" I say happily.
"Oh snap, you're lucky." She says laughing, "Does he have an older brother you can give me?"
"No, but he has a younger one."
"How much younger?"
"Oh jeez I've got to go now." I say quickly.
"Why?"
"We're going to The Guitar Temple now."
"You mean you and hot neighbor?"
"Yeah."
"Oh lucky you. See ya." She says as she hangs up. I hurry up to the stairs to my room and throw on a black tank top and army green skater shorts. I slip on my black converse and head out the door. I lock up before heading to Joseph's house. I ring the doorbell and a woman with tattooed shoulders answers the door.
"Hi . . .uhh is Joseph here?" I ask awkwardly.
"Yeah, hold on." She says as she heads into the house.
"Oh it's you." the younger brother says as he slinks toward the door.
"As opposed to 'you' try calling me Anna."
"Okay Anna I'm Jakob Danger."
"Sure you are." I say rolling my eyes, did this guy have an ego or what.
"It's true, but you can call me Jake or J.D. if you're feeling daring."
"Hey Anna." Joseph says as he comes up to the door.
"Oh so you've chosen the ugly brother." Jake says crossing his arms and walking away.
"Don't mind him." Joseph says as he shuts the door behind us. We head up to what must be his car because it looks like he bought it from a used car dealership.
"The woman who answered the door, was that your mom?"
"Yeah." He says as we get into the car.
"She has tattoos."
"Yup. Gotta a problem?"
"Nope, just interesting."
"Your parents are straight cut people aren't they."
"I guess so." I say as he starts the car, "My dad has one tattoo on his upper arm of a black star, he got it when he was a teenager. He says he regrets getting it. "
"Just one?" Joseph says smirking, "My dad's a band guy too and his arms are covered in tattoos. Plus he's got some on his hips."
"Wow." I say in slight disbelief. "Where your parents work, they don't they make them cover up their tattoos."
"Well no, they're the owners."
"Owners of what exactly, Oakland drug lording?" I say jokingly.
"No, they own a record company, Adeline Records."
"Never really heard of it, but then again I pay more attention to the band that their record label."
Joseph parks his car across the street from The Guitar Temple. We head inside and we casually stroll along the row of guitars and basses. He stops at the shelf of different strings. Meanwhile, I got my eye on a gorgeous electric acoustic Ibanez. I pick it off the stand and strum it a couple of times.
"Do you play?"
"Umm well sort of, my uncle gave me his old guitar and I learnt a bit but then I accidentally broke it so I stopped playing."
"That sucks."
"What about you?" I ask as we head up to the cash register, "Are you in a band?"
"Yeah, we're called Rebel Tuesdays."
"That's an awesome name, so I guess your chances of success are pretty good considering your parents own a record company."
"You'd think so, but no." he says as he pays for his strings, "My dad said he wouldn't sign us, we'd have to get signed on our own."
"That's cool I guess."
"Besides if we get successful I want it to be because we're actually good."
"That's everything!" I call across the house.
"Okay let's go." My mom says as she locks up the front door. My dad is taking the final boxes to the house in the U-Haul truck so Mom and I take the car.
