Serendipity Girl, chapter 9

"What's up with Jay?" I ask the next afternoon as I sit spooned in Joey's arms on my back porch.
"What do you mean?"
"Yesterday when he asked your dad if he could stay over his tone changed dramatically."
"Jay has some issues at home."
"What kind of issues?"
"Fuck, I shouldn't be telling you this." Joey mutters.
"I won't tell anyone."
"A few years back his mother died from cancer and well his father basically broke down and well started drinking and stuff."
"Oh."
"And we'd been friends since the fourth grade so our parents knew each other and stuff. His father has his highs and lows, when he's low Jay comes to live with us, for his own well being."
"His father doesn't get pissed?"
"His father doesn't notice until he's sobered up and he doesn't get mad, he actually thanks my parents."
"So right now he's on a low?"
"Not yet, but he's spiraling there, so I give it a week before Jay moves in with us again."
"Must be pretty hard on him."
"Don't say that, he absolutely hates people feeling sorry for him." Joey warns. "He copes, usually by playing bass."

"What about Mark and Luke, what's their deal?" I ask trying to change the subject.
"Mark is infamous for saying shit too quickly then regretting it, but he's always been like that." Joey says shrugging, "And Luke's mother looks younger than she is so he's always being bugged about the whole hot mom thing, and I guess he just snapped."
"Yeah, I guess so." I mumble, "Was she a groupie?" Joey smirks evilly.
"According to Tre, she was."
"You mean they knew each other?"
"His mom is Tre's sister."
"Ohhh, that's harsh!"
"I'm not sure if Tre was joking or not." Joey is still smirking at this point.

"Do you want to do something today?" I mumble.
"Nah, I'm too lazy." He says kissing my cheek playfully.
"Oh okay then." I say as I give a long kiss on the lips, "Whoops, I forgot you're lazy." I get up and walk down the back steps.
"Hey." Joey whines as he hurries after me and we end up falling into the pool.
"Now I'm wet." I say pretending to be upset.
"You look good wet."
"Shoosh you." I say as he swims up to me as locks lips with mine. I push him away. "My parents are home."
"Oh right." He backs away, "Tell them to leave." I burst out laughing.
"Yeah sure. Whatever you say." I climb out of the pool, sopping wet.

"If you wanted me in the pool you should've said so." I say removing my shirt and shorts so that I'm in my bathing suit. Joey tosses his shirt out of the pool.
"Come back." I lay my clothes flat so they'll dry and I jump back in the pool.
"Hey look, it's Buttercup!" I say as I see the familiar figure walk across the Armstrong porch. Joey swishes around.
"He's with a girly!"
"Hey, what did I say about the term girly?"
"Look!" I see his with one of the girls from the skate park.
"Ohhh, so he did ask her out!" I squeal.
"You knew about this?"
"Umm, he made me promise not to tell anyone." I say meekly.
"So much for that." Joey snickers.
"Hey don't tell him or else he's going to break my pinky!"
"Okay since you're precious to me I won't tell."

"Joe!" Jakob calls from the fence, "Mom says supper's ready!"
"Argh." Joey says hoisting himself out of the pool. "See you tomorrow."
"See ya." I say as he grabs his shirt off the ground and leaves my backyard.
