The Promise You Kept (sequel to Angels Do Exist), chapter 2
Green Day lead me to their tour bus and as Mike sat in the driver's seat, he nodded at the passanger's seat.
"Sit there, you need to tell me how to get there you know," he replied seriously. I nodded as Billie Joe and Tré glanced over at me and gave me a resurring smile, making everything ok.
"So Seth, how is she?" Tré asked me. I didn't need to ask who she was, it was my mother.
"She's good, you can tell she's like lonely and um... all I can say is she's never had a boyfriend ever since my dad died," I replied sadly.
"St. Jimmy died?" Billie Joe asked. I nodded and added, "blew his brains out into the bay."
"Wow, that's strange," Billie Joe said.
"How?" I asked.
"Turn right here," I instructed Mike, he did so. Mike had a turn in speaking to me about my past.
"When we all met him, he was the happiest person alive, he loved your aunt and would do anything for her. He always would treat us to all kinds of stuff. When we all had choir concerts, he watched you. Although he absolutely loved your mother, whom he named 'Whatsername.' I still can't understand why he would do that," Mike said.
I went silent for a moment. Did he kill himself... because of me? Was I the sole purpose of him committing suicide? I thought about it more and more while I instructed Mike to 'Coyote Ugly.'
"Whoo! Donut sprinkles!" Tré yelled while snorting donut sprinkles. I looked at him strangly then looked at Billie in the same way. He just shrugged his shoulders.
"Whoo, that's sweet," Tré said while blinking a couple of times.
"Well of course it is... duh!" I replied.
"Is this it?" Mike said while pointing to the bar.
"Yeah it is," I breathed, I wonder how my mother is going to react. Luckily, 'Lil' took a shine to me and allowed me to come to the bar whenever as long as I didn't bother anyone. It was always funny watching people get drunk and try to dance, but end up falling.
"Mike, are going to be ok?" Billie Joe said while putting a hand on Mike's shoulder. I looked at him worriedly, hoping for him not to have one of his infamous panic attacks. But surprisenly, he looked totally calm.
"I'll be fine, I just wanna see her again."
"As do we all," Tré said.
"Wanna lead?" Mike asked me. I nodded and walked inside the bar, it was not crowded but not deserted, the perfect amount. They were playing one of their famous songs, Def Leppard's 'Pour Some Sugar On Me.' The girls were on the bar and dancing, sure, it was awkward but I was used to it. Some of the women were pouring water on my mom, ok, now that was awkward.
The song ended and Mike, Tré, Billie Joe and I walked up to the bar.
"Mom!" I yelled. My mother looked at me, then at Green Day. She took one look at Mike and her eyes widened like her smile. She hopped easily over the bar into Mike's arms. They were kissing frantically, they laid short kisses all over each other's faces. Finally they just held onto each other.
"I love you, I love you, I love you," Mike was repeating it over and over. Mom had tears swimming down her face, I have never seen my mom cry, it was weird.
Mom looked at Mike and just smiled, then she looked at Billie Joe. She smiled, as did Billie Joe, he had a charming grin that could pick up any girl he wanted, kinda how he got his wife I guess. Mom hugged Billie Joe and he looked kind of freaked out, but finally put his arms around her and they kinda swayed as they were squeezing the life out of each other.
Then she looked at Tré who had a sly smile on his face, I know his reputation, I gave him a warning glance. Mom hugged him shyly and he put his hands to my mom's waist, she smacked them away. Whoa, she did know them pretty well.
"Look, I'm off work in about half an hour, do you guys want a drink or something?" she asked. They all nodded and she fixed them up a vodka tonic each, she was famous for it.
"Hey! There's my boyfriend!" I heard a voice say. I turned around and smiled, it was 'Lil, the founder of the place. It was a joke between us, I was her boyfriend and I just get embarrassed. She hugged me and ruffled my hair.
"Hey 'Lil!" Mom yelled, this caught 'Lil's attention.
"Is 'Devil' coming on anytime soon?" she yelled across the bar.
"Yeah, it's supposed to be next."
"Awesome! After 'Devil', I'm going home, and so is your boyfriend!"
"Aww, poor me, break my heart why don't you!" she teased. She gave me a playful swat and went in the back.
The song, "The Devil Went to Georgia" came on, everyone cheered as the women hopped on the bar. Green Day watched intentively as my mom danced with an intensity that could kill a person.
"You're lucky to have her as a mother Seth, you have no idea."
"Yes I do."
