Photographs And Still Frames In Your Mind, chapter 3

Lunch came as soon as the dragging day would allow it and Billie and Mike found themselves in the busy canteen. Once they'd got some food they turned around to find somewhere to sit and saw Kate sitting at a table all by herself. Billie looked around the crowded dinning hall and saw the Bitches were whispering excitedly to a large group of people close by. He had a suspicion that he knew what they were talking about and the quick glances towards the empty table and the giggles which followed confirmed it.

Mike had seen her too. "We should go sit with her," he said.

"Now who's going soft?" Joked Billie as they set of towards her table.

"Do you mind if we sit here?" Billie asked.

"Sure. That's if you can find room," joked Kate. They both sat down and started eating.

"So, how's your day going?" asked Mike.

"OK I guess. I'm missing my friends a bit, but I just keep telling myself 'I'll make new ones'," she said cheerily with a smile that you could see right through. She was feeling really lonely. Well who wouldn't? No one in the school would even go near her now.

"What are we then!" asked Billie pretending to be insulted.

"I don't know. What are you?" laughed Kate. Billie grinned.

"Mike told me this morning that you are in a band," she said, interested.

"Yeah, Sweet Children. You should come and see us, at the Gilman, sometime," he said.

"Yeah, that sounds like fun," she said with a genuine smile. He'd look forward to it. However this moment was not to last.

Out of the corner of his eye Billie saw Staci break away from her large group. What did she want now? She was the leader of the Bitches. She strolled up behind him, tucked a strand of her long blond hair behind her ear and placed one hand on each of his shoulders. Billie put his fork down and stared at his plate.

"What are you doing hanging around with these losers?" Staci said in a sickly sweet voice, glancing at Kate.

"Hiya, Staci. How are things?" said Billie in a false cheery voice.

Staci took her right had of off his shoulder and started playing with his hair, ignoring the sarcasm in his voice. "You know I don't know why you waste your time with them when you're always welcome to eat lunch with me." Billie saw that Mike wasn't paying attention to what was going on and was continuing to eat as though nothing was happening. Kate on the other hand had stopped eating and was watching with an amused look on her face.

"I like some conversation with my meals," Billie said as much to Kate as to Staci. Kate smiled, but Staci replaced her hand on his shoulder and squeezed, leaning down to whisper in his ear.

"They don't need you. You're better than them," she whispered. Finally he turned around to face her.

"But unfortunately you're not," he said loud enough for all of Staci's friends could hear. They started sniggering until Staci gave them a stern look. They fell silent immediately.

"One day you'll look around and you'll see," she said annoyed and went over to join her gang again. Billie picked up his fork and continued to eat his lunch in silence.

"What was all that about?" asked Kate.

"That's Staci." Said Mike with a grin. "She thinks she owns Billie."

"Aw. Poor you," said Kate.

Billie gave a faint smile and added "She'll get over it," between hurried, mouthfuls of his rapidly cooling food.

He remained quiet for the rest of lunch only adding to the conversation Mike and Kate where having when Mike prompted him or he was asked a question. He really had to put a stop to everything with Staci. The only thing was that he didn't have a clue how and Mike just seemed to find the whole thing hilarious.
