California Sun, chapter 4
I was in the car with my mum driving to my new school ready for my first day at Pinole Valley High still half asleep even after the chaos of getting ready for school in less than 15 minutes since I made the mistake of sleeping in. In a way I was nervous of starting school here even though I had Mike, Ash, Billie Joe, Tre, Cal and Maud for friends but I had no fucking idea what the other people and teachers were like at this school. I could feel my breakfast of pancakes moving with my lurching stomach and I was hoping I wouldn't be rushing out of the car at school just to puke in some bushes.
"So... first day of school, are you nervous?" My mum questioned.
"Uh yeah, a little bit," I admitted to my mum.
"Would you like me to come into class with you and hold your hand? " My mum teased or at least I think she was messing around.
"Mum! Please tell me you're joking if you did that I would lose the friends I have luckily gained and have a ruined reputation for the rest of my miserable school years," I whined.
"I think I'd be more embarrassed than you," I shoved my mum in the arm and rolled my eyes and looked out at the window and we drove through the suburban streets of Berkeley. A couple of minutes later we rolled in front of the hectic and busy high school and mum pulled into a park to drop me off.
"Well my little girls first day of school in America well good luck and don't get into too much trouble," Mum sighed handing me $10 for lunch.
"Thanks for the cash mother dearest and I promise I will be a good little girl," I said in a sarcastic baby voice.
My mum sighed and I got out of the car and watched her drive off. On my own to fend for myself now I sighed and walked down a path towards the front building which I assumed was the office. The school told my mum on the phone that I had to report to the office and see some lady called Mrs. De Laney first thing in the morning and I had to report there before anything else.
I walked into the office and saw a small fat lady greeting me with a smile. "You must be Miss Reid I'm Mrs. De Laney and I'll be helping you find your class and etcetera," Mrs. De Laney said while studying what I looked like looking abit disappointed I didn't look like a stereotypical new kid; the ones who try and look perfect and innocent on their first day.
"I sure am nice to meet you Mrs. De Laney," I said in a sarcastically bright voice shaking her hand. She started rambling on about how the college is proud to have an Australian student at their college and then running through history of the college and where everything was. I blankly stared outside the office window watching students walk past either gossiping or rushing off to class. I saw Maud and Ash walking together and they spotted me in the office then started franticly waving at me and jumping up and down I smiled and waved back and I rolled my eyes towards Mrs. De Laney's direction. They knew I was stuck with her ramblings and pointed and laughed at me.
I started listening to Mrs. De Laney just before she finished and then followed her as she took me on a tour of the school as soon as the bell rang for first period. She showed me the main downstairs hall where al the lockers and some class rooms were then upstairs where more classrooms where and a library and computer lab. She took me onto the school football grounds which looked nothing like an Australian football oval and then showed me the gym and outside basketball courts.
She could tell I was getting really bored and fidgety and decided to escort me to my first class. I breathed deeply since I was nervous since I didn't like walking into a crowed room with strangers gawping at me while excitedly whispering. She took me to my classroom which at the moment was history. I followed her in as the noisy class was instructed to be quiet.
"Class, we have a new student all the way from Australia called Tamara so I'd like you to make her feel welcome," Mrs. De Laney announced.
Great the whole fucking class was gawping at me I scanned the room to see if I knew anyone. I spotted Tre and Mike waving their arms frantically at me I sighed of relief, I actually knew at least two people in my new class. "Mr. Wright and Mr. Pritchard can you please stop acting like a couple of clowns and terrorizing this young lady," the teacher said sternly.
"But Mrs. Jackson we know her, she knows that we're completely nuts and we're just trying to make her spot us, so she knows she actually knows someone in this shitty class," Mike protested.
"Mind you language Mr. Pritchard and don't address your classmates in that manner," Mrs. Jackson snapped.
"Yes ma'am," Mike mumbled bitterly as he received dirty looks from most of the class.
"Anyway moving on, I believe you're Tamara nice to meet you. My names Mrs. Jackson and I'll be your history teacher for this semester," the teacher said. Also like Mrs. De Laney, a disappointed look on her face that I didn't look like the stereotypical good mannered new kid and my friend choice was probably also another reason.
"Yep that's my name and don't wear it out!" I said with a sarcastic smile.
"Well...Okay I'll try not to if you stay in my good books," she said a little blown away. "Now take a seat near anyone of your choice but choose wisely and we'll carry on with the lesson," she said with a changing the subject kind of voice.
Mrs. De Laney left the classroom after wishing me good luck even though she didn't really mean it and I went and sat next to an empty desk luckily next to Tre.
"Hey dude nice first impression and wise seat choice," Tre whispered across from his desk and hi-fived me.
I took a bow as he laughed.
"How dare you not sit next to someone as superior as me and instead sit next to someone like him," hissed Mike.
"Uh- I hope you're not talking about the one and the only Tre Cool," Tre said proudly.
"Geez give me a break I'll sit next to you next time... Happy?" I snapped towards Mike.
"Yes ma'am," Mike said saluting me. I laughed I was happy I was in a class with these guys even though I knew I was going to be in for one hell of a ride. As Mrs. Jackson yabbered on about Romans I happily chatted to Tre and Mike.
"So what do we have next period?" I asked Mike.
"Pfft! How the fuck am I sposed to know what you and Tre have?" huffed Mike
"Well I wonder... you're in our class?" I said in a sarcastic retard voice.
"Well maybe we have different classes for each period little Miss I-know-everything-on-my-first-day-of-school," Mike said he mimicked my retard voice.
"Oh Fuck...why can't you god damn Americans be as simple as us Australians," I groaned.
"Maybe because we think being complicated is smart," Tre said brightly.
"Hmm probably I never thought about that," Mike said.
"Well maybe cause you never really bother to think," Tre said grinning.
"Look at yourself dumbass you only come to school to drum and try and score some chicks and to make sure all teachers will be basket cases before you leave," Mike laughed.
"All 101% true," Tre said brightly.
I looked around the classroom looking at all the other people in it. Damn you could label more people here than in a soup can factory. At the front were the geeks, The Jocks were in the middle talking about their last football game and the plastics were up the back putting on makeup then there were the nobodies, rebels and us behind the plastics which was good for me I have a target for my rubber piffing.
"Fucking hell those skanks in front of us are giving me the shits and I've only been in here for half and hour," I said bitterly.
"We've been stuck with them for a whole 2 months trust me don't get on their bad side or else you're fucked," Mike warned.
"Pfft! Do you think I could care less?" I said laughing.
"Meh... you're loss," Tre said calmly.
I pinched the eraser out of Tre's pencil case as he protested but I ignored him and broke it up then got a bit and flicked it at one of them. Bang right at the back of her head. She huffed shocked and turned around then saw us then shrugged thinking something must've fallen from the roof. Mike and Tre couldn't help snickering as I kept on flicking bits of eraser at each of them as they were oblivious that I was flicking it at them. I was unfortunately oblivious to the fact that the teacher had stopped teaching and was staring at me with her arms crossed.
"Miss Reid I'm curious... back in Australia is it a cultural tradition for a new kid to throw erasers at fellow class mates?" she asked coolly.
"No just because you may think that we Australian's are retarded hillbilly morons with no brains doesn't mean that we have childish as that," I said proud that I could've shut her up.
"That just comes to show that you're representing your country with childish behavior," she said calmly.
"And that just comes to show that you're representing Americans as stupid naive twits," I said realizing that I may have taken it too far since I had the whole grade staring at me. "Even though with most of the people I've met haven't made me think that," I finished off.
"MISS REID YOU'VE ONLY BEEN HERE FOR 45 MINUTES AND YOU THINK YOU CAN SHOW SUCH CHEEK TO YOUR ELDERS I THINK A LITTLE TIME IN AFTER SCHOOL DETENTION WILL PUT OYU IN YOUR PLACE," Mrs. Jackson yelled incredibly pissed off.
She went back to teaching as I answered back with "Yes ma'am," quite calmly surprisingly for me after being screeched at.
"Whoa man that was awesome as!" Mike said surprised that I had it in me.
"Yeah good work you amused me, Mike and the rest of the class in one of the most shittest subjects Pinole Valley High has to offer," Tre said patting me on the back.
"It's going to be an interesting semester with you an us together," Mike said happily.
"Yeah tell me bout it were gonna have some great fun," I said like an excited 4 year old in a toy store.
"You said it sister!" Tre said like a black gospel woman. The bell rang as a scoped up my bag and headed out to recess with Mike and Tre.
"So... first day of school, are you nervous?" My mum questioned.
"Uh yeah, a little bit," I admitted to my mum.
"Would you like me to come into class with you and hold your hand? " My mum teased or at least I think she was messing around.
