I Will Always Be There For You, chapter 6
They did calm down eventually but they started bragging to people. I begged them not to tell so they went around going, "Oh, Ramona Wright, have we showed you the way to the bathrooms? Ramona Wright, do you need a pencil? That's right, we're friends with Ramona Wright." No one either knew or cared and didn't seem to pay any attention. Apparently those two acted like that all the time so no one found anything odd.
Joey, however, found it quite amusing when I passed him in the hallway as we were going to fourth period and they were dragging me over to my locker, "Do you know what books you need for math, Ramona Wright?"
He walked over as they were fighting over who got to carry my books, "How is Ramona Wright's first day going?" he laughed.
I gave him a I'll-kill-you-if-you-mention-this-at-home look and said, "Ramona Wright's day is going quite well. How's yours Joseph Armstrong?"
"Quite sufficient. I believe you have met the biggest fans of our fathers' band."
"Yeah...I noticed. Oh well. They seem nice."
"Don't be too sure."
"Uh-oh. I better go break those two up," Ash said as they were pulling each other's hair and a small crowd had gathered.
"So have you met the new kid?" Joey asked me.
"I thought I was the new kid."
"No there's another guy. He seemed pretty cool."
The bell rang, "Oh okay cool. What's his name?"
"Devon something...."
"Oh okay. Well, see ya!" I waved as I was pulled to math class.
"Devon Taylor?" Mrs. Ryan said.
"Here." I looked up. Some guy with brown hair....
"I believe you and Miss Ramona Wright are new this year?" Mrs. Ryan asked.
"Yes." we both said at once. He turned around to look at me. Wow. Those were some killer gray eyes. Killer? Oh well...he's pretty cute.
"Well, since you're obviously here we can start class. Today we're just going to be-" And blah, blah, blah. We did something with folders and books or something.
The bell rang far too early if you ask me and like a herd, we went down the stairs to lunch. A few teachers downstairs closed their doors at the noise. "Yeah. The older kids are always complaining about how loud we are when we go to lunch." Gwen said.
"You're sitting with us, right?" Jane said excitedly.
"Of course. You guys are my friends, right?"
"Of course," Ash said.
We stood in line for lunch for a while, it was hamburgers today. Yum. I followed Gwen, Jane and Ash to their usual table. Rather nicer than Joey's seat on the bus. We talked for a bit and I mentioned Devon, "So have you guys seen the other new guy?"
"Oh Devon? Yeah," Ash said.
"Oh well...I thought he was pretty cute." I laughed.
"You kidding me?" Gwen shrieked.
"He is the new resident HAWT-TEE!" Gwen and Jane sang.
He walked by and we all waved and said, "Hi, Devon." In the weirdest voices ever. He was creeped out and sped up. Then we cackled like hyenas. Was a good day.
"Do you have the time? To listen to me whine? About nothing and everything all at once?" Gwen and Jane hopped along ahead of Joey, Ash and me singing obnoxiously as we went to the buses. Ash smiled at Joey and me, and the two in front suddenly turned around.
"Hey! Why aren't you guys singing? It's not like you don't know the words your dads wr-", Jane started loudly because she had an earphone over one of her ears while hopping backwards.
"Jane, shush!" Ash hissed and covered her mouth. People around us stared.
"Oh. Sorry," she whispered.
"Do those two always act high?" I asked.
"Hey, look, Ramona! It's Devon! Go talk to him!" Gwen said pointing and pushing me in his direction before I could realize what they said I bumped right into him, spilling his Gatorade all over both of us as they went on to the buses.
"Oh! I'm so sorry. Those idiots pushed me into you," I muttered.
"Yeah. I saw. Why would they think you wanted to talk to me? Did you?"
"Oh...well...uh...."
"Well I wanted to talk to you. You're Ramona, right?"
"Um...yes. As in correct. As in my name is Ramona Wright. But really my dad's name is...well I don't know if you know but-"
"Whoa. Okay! Okay! Cool. My name's Devon Taylor." he laughed and held out his hand. I grabbed it. He smiled.
"Do you mean cool as in cool that's awesome or cool as in-"
He shook his head, "As in I saw you and wanted to get to know you better." He looked down at our hands that were still just grasping one another. He took his other hand and lifted them up and down in a hand shaking motion, "I think this is what one does with this."
We laughed for a few awkward seconds. He smiled and brushed off more Gatorade from his shirt. "Do you live far? I can walk you home. Give me your books." His friends were walking off shaking their heads. Wow. This was turning out to be a pretty good first day.
"Oh...okay. Thanks!" I handed him my books and he walked me to my street.
About halfway there he asked, "So where'd you move here from?"
"New York City."
"Oh, really? Cool. I just came from Nevada...near Carson City."
"Cool."
"Yeah. You getting along good I see. Got some new friends?"
"Well, yeah. They...well...see my dad is a...he's in a....and...I...well I knew Joey before moving here."
"Oh. How?"
"Well uh...see..."
"Ramona! What are you up to talking to that boy?" Keith hollered at me from his car. He must have been driving back home too. "Get in. I'll give you a lift."
"Oh...is that your dad?" Devon said a bit disappointed our walk was over.
"Future step...mom's marrying him." I whispered to Devon who nodded then I answered Keith, "Devon was sort of walking me home...," then remembering his lecture on it I called him, "dad."
"Oh. Sorry to halt young love, but it's about to rain and your mom wants you home."
"He was taking me home!"
"It's okay. My house is just a few blocks that way." Devon pointed off some way. I doubt it really was. He was just being polite.
"I'm sorry. Bye, Devon." Ugh. Was I gonna get Keith back.
"What did you do to your shirt?" mom asked while she was chopping vegetables in the kitchen.
"Gwen and Jane pushed me right into some guy with some Gatorade."
"Oh really? So you got some friends already?"
"Yeah. Gwen, Jane and Ash. They're fans of dad's band but they're cool."
"Oh. That's nice." she put some vegetables in a pot and went to the sink and filled it with water, "And who's this boy?"
"Oh. His name's Devon. He's new this year like me."
"Really? I'd like to meet these friends of yours. Did they want to come over this weekend?"
"I don't know...."
Mom raised her eyebrow, "Oh?"
"What?"
She had some look on her face, "Who exactly is this Devon?"
"Ramona's got a boyfriend!" Keith came in calling and grabbed mom's waist as a greeting.
He kissed her, "Really? Way to go!"
I shuddered at them, "He isn't my boyfriend.... It's only the first day of school for God's sake! What did you want me home early for anyways?"
Mom got a bit of a puzzled look on her face, "Wanted? I didn't say I wanted you home early."
We both looked at Keith. He shrugged, "Guess I misinterpreted."
Mom raised an eyebrow but kissed his cheek and went back to her cooking. I was rather upset he'd budge in on me and Devon. Possible boyfriend here! What's his problem?
