Too Cool To Have A Name, chapter 2

Avery

I was scanning the back of a cereal box when the doorbell rang. Derek stood there holding flowers. This is typical. Every time we have a fight, he makes up for it with some cheap grocery store flowers. I let him in anyway. It's not his fault, really. He just... has a temper, you know? He looked at my outfit and demanded I change. I reminded myself that I love him. Well... whatever.

I couldn't change in the bathroom. There was a mirror in there. So I settled for dressing in my room.

I have a nice view of the tennis court from my room. And a nice view of the pool.

Needless to say... we're kind of rich. Well, extremely rich. I have everything I could possibly ever want. I hate it.

I snapped out of my little world to hear Derek coming up. I shoved a tee-shirt and pants on. Then I met Derek in the hall.

"It's about time."

"Yeah... sorry, hun."

He grabbed my wrist. I yelped quietly. We walked out together and we passed my mom in the kitchen, making breakfast for my brother, as usual.

"Hi, hunny," she said. It was rather shocking. "You look like you've gained some weight. Lay off the chips, okay?"

Well, that was more normal. I looked down.

Okay, so I'll tell you a little about me.

My name is Avery. I'm sixteen. I have long brown hair and blue eyes. I get told I look like Alexis Bledel. You know, the chick from Gilmore Girls. I have nearly no body fat, but my mom tends to see the worse. I have a younger brother named Nate. He's annoying, but nicer than my mom. My dad is quiet. He doesn't talk to me much. I don't get good grades. I'm kind of popular. I don't want to be. I have a boyfriend. His name is Derek.

That's my life. Summed up into a tiny paragraph. Sad, huh?

Anyway, Derek pushed me into his car and we were off. He looked at me again.

"You look really stupid. I think your mom was right; you are gaining weight. Gross."

I turned toward the window. This was the perfect morning. I swear.

"You know, if I disgust you so much, why are you still with me?"

He looked at me with those brown eyes.

"Because."

And that's when I knew: he didn't even know why he was still with me.
