Too Cool To Have A Name, chapter 3
Adelie
I walked right next to Ashlyn, in case someone was confused about who I was/wasn't with. Although, to tell you the truth, I was also a tad confused.
Anyway, we got to the school about five minutes from actually leaving Ashlyn's house. He looked down at me from his high perch; okay, so he was just really tall and squeezed my shoulder. Beginning of tenth grade. Oh, what fun. And lucky us, our lockers were only across the hall from each other. So, there was a plus side to this whole high school nonsense. I spun the lock open and deposited my books and backpack. I took my binder and found Ashlyn. He looked really white. Like... paper white. He looked at me and smiled. But he was still all googly-eyed. I glanced down the hall where he had been looking and saw Ashlyn's dream girl. There was Avery, in the flesh. She was wearing a tee shirt and jeans. Weird. She doesn't usually miss an opportunity to bare all. All right, I'm not being fair, but whatever.
I waved my hand in front of Ashlyn's hypnotized eyes. He blinked and looked at his watch.
"Nine. Class starts in five. Get to class."
I rolled my eyes and found the stairs. First period history. I wouldn't get to talk to Ashlyn until fourth period. Science. All right... science isn't bad.
I skidded into the classroom right when the bell rung. I found a seat in the back next to a new kid. At least, I had never seen him before.
"Close, Adelie. Watch the clock next time." Mr. Jungk was one of those teachers who though they were all hip and young, when really their the opposite. Those teachers cut you some slack though, so he was okay in my book. I had him last year for history. He teaches freshman and sophomores, don't you know it.
He started calling roll. I found out the kid next to me was, indeed, new. His name was Ian Fletcher.
For the first day's event, everyone had to pick a partner and find out three things about them, then present it to the class. And seeing as I didn't know anyone in that particular class, I was stuck with Ian Fletcher. Which, by the way, wasn't such a punishment...
"Hi. I'm Ian. And you're Adelie."
"Yep. So... what are three things about you.? I'm just dying to know." He smiled. At me. His green eyes lit up when he smiled.
"Um... I play drums. Although I'm now looking for a new band, considering I've left mine behind in Indiana."
"What was your band called?"
"Broken Taillights."
"Fascinating. Two more things."
"My favorite subject is science."
"Okay. And?"
"And... I dunno. Nothing else about me is interesting."
"I beg to differ. Just say something."
"Oh! My sister just got married."
"That's pretty exciting."
"Yeah... so what about you?"
Okay, okay. Say something smart.
"Well, my favorite class is art history."
That wasn't bad.
"Really? I wanted to take that, but it was full by the time I got my registration forms."
"That sucks."
D'oh!
"I guess. What else?
"I love Placebo. My favorite song is 'I Do'."
"I like them too! I like 'Pure Morning."
Smile, idiot.
"Good song. Okay... and... I want to be a photographer."
"Time's up!" Mr. Jungk called.
