Until Death Do Us Part, chapter 2

Alex woke up to the sound of soft sobbing. Where was she? And uuurrrgggghh what was that pain? Her arms felt like dead weights. She tried to open her eyes but they felt so heavy it was nearly impossible. She could feel someone gently rubbing the back of her hand. Who was that? She tried to speak but her throat was too dry, then someone spoke to her. It was Billie. Her best friend Billie. She would recognise that voice anywhere.

"Alex, I thought you would never wake up... I... I thought I would never be able to see you again" Billie said with the sound of both happiness and confusion in his voice.
He poured Alex a cup of water from the jug, which was placed on the stand next to the bed. With the help of Billie, Alex slowly sipped water through the straw. Almost immediately, she felt her throat moisten. There were a few nervous minutes of silence after that, neither having any idea what to say to each other, and both not daring to look into one another's eyes. Then both Billie and Alex started to say something at the same time.
"oh erm sorry Billie, you first" Alex finally let out, still not quite looking into the beautiful green eyes of Billie, as she knew that she wouldn't be able to look away.
"Oh, well I was just going to ask why?" questioned Billie.
"Why what?" Alex said in return. Billie just looked at her then down to her wrists, which were wrapped in bandages. Alex saw these glances and just sighed. Billie hung his head but still held onto Alex's hand as he thought not only she needed comforting at a time like this; he also felt he needed the support.

At that very moment, a doctor entered the room to check on Alex's progress. "Aahh we've come around have we?" the doctor asked whilst checking the monitor to the side of the bed. Alex's gave a weak smile and sighed once more.
Billie could tell he wasn't wanted and gently let go of Alex's hand. "I'll be off then Alex, I'll come in tomorrow... I promise" Billie said to Alex, but with the no expression in his voice. "Oh ok" Alex replied whilst closing her eyes. With that, she heard the door click shut and the room fell silent. A sad tear spilled out of her eyes and seeped down her cheek. She was alone again, would this get any better? she thought to herself.

Doctors were hurriedly rushing in and out of Alex's room, checking on things and asking her questions throughout the week. Alex didn't answer as she felt disappointed and hurt that Billie didn't return. Her eyes would well up as images of him flashed through her mind like a film on a big screen. However, Alex's health started to improve, and her parents had visited a couple of times, both with a look of fear across their faces. But Alex didn't care; they hadn't cared about her all her life, so why would they care now? All she wanted to do was to get away from the overpowering smell of disinfectant, and the hustle and bustle of people in the room.

Friday was the day she would be let out. Alex would just stare at the clock and watch as time seemed to go so slowly. She would wait for the day to come when she could be free to go. She had her plans; she would get on a plane and fly over to England where she would start her life. She was going to leave her old life behind and start fresh. A clean slate and she wasn't going to bump into any of this again.

All of this was true until the year 2026 came along.
