The Basket Case Mind Of A Deranged Woman, chapter 2
Bathing In Guilt
That day, I walked around the courtyard and observed the wackos that were staring at me. I was smarter than to talk to any of them, except I wasn’t smarter than to talk to Billie Joe. And he was worse, I had to share a room with him. He could come and rape, murder, or something, me while I was asleep. Fucking hell! I needed to get out of this place!
That night, I didn’t devise my “get away plan like I intended on. Instead, I thought about Derek. Heck, he was the only thing that I thought about at night.
I had been dating him since I was 10 years old. He was everything to me, we were truely in love!
The day of the accident (*shivers*) I was having him over so that we could go to the movies together. His parents would drive him to my house, and then we’d walk to the theater.
I’d better stop there. I didn’t want one more tear to shed, especially while I was in here.
I closed my eyes, but felt some moment going around at the edge of my bed. I sat up only to find that Billie Joe was laying down next to me.
“Um...excuse me but what are you doing? I asked.
“Shh...I’m trying to sleep. I have to admit that I let him stay there for the rest of the night. I felt bad that he had been mental and also had to stay here as well and trapped and isolated as I.
Now, the funny thing was: I would never do this for anyone else. Any other psycho would of gotten kicked out. But I was prone to this Billie Joe character after spending only one day with him.
That night, when I finally went to sleep, I dreamed the same dream that I had every night since the crash. I dreamed of myself standing in the middle of the street. People around me were screaming “get out of the road. There’s a car coming!! but I didn’t listen to them. Then a red car comes up from the bottom of the hill. It swerved around me, but hit another car and blew up. Then I dreamed of myself running to the car and calling for help, but no-one was there. Then I would pull out Derek’s dead body from the car and wake up!
I felt guitly about Derek’s death, even though I’ve been told (and knew) that it wasnt my fault.
In the morning, Billie Joe woke me up. He said that breakfast would be served soon. Then the tall guard came in and dragged us down to the cafeteria. We ate with Mike and Tre, but I didn’t talk. I was much too frantic to say anything.
Then we were taken to this bathroom with two bathtubs in it. I didn’t know what this was all about, but had a hunch that I would be getting bathed.
The nurse pulled the curtain to separate the two tubs and I got undressed.
About fifteen minutes later, the nurse had left to get more shampoo, and I was sitting in the tub, bubbles covering every inch of my body. I heard a loud noise coming from behind the curtain and Billie Joe appeared in front of me.
“Billie Joe, what are you doing. Get back in there. he had a towel wrapped around him of course.
“You’re covered in bubbles. I can’t see anything. he said, kneeling down next to the tub. He put his arms over the edge of the tub. “Can you tell me a story? I asked the nurse and she wouldn’t. he asked.
“Well, what kind of story do you want? I was trying to be nice, because I didn’t like the fact that he was there anyways but, what could I do?
“Um...something from your life. he answered.
“Okay, lets see.. I decided on telling him about Derek. “When I was ten years old, I met this boy in school. He had black hair, blue eyes and most beautiful face that I had ever seen. His name was Derek. He stared at me in class and blushed when he talked to me. But one day, he came up to me right before Math Class and he asked if I wanted to go out with him...
“What did you say?
“...I said yes. We’ve been dating for four years. I love him! But, about three months ago, I we planned on going to the movies down the street.
“What movie were you going to see? Billie Joe asked obnoxiously.
“Only You! I still hadn’t seen it to this day. Well, his parents were going to drop him off at my house and we would walk to the theater. But things didn’t go as planned. That morning, I put on my black dress with the white flower pattern embroidered on it. I took the dog for a walk in the meadow behind the house. I played a game up catch. Then I chased the dog around a little...
“What was the dog’s name?
“...Ruth. Then, I heard my sister calling me so I went over to her. Two cops were standing next to her...
“Billie Joe!!! Get back into YOUR tub right now!!! the nurse called.
“But Piper was telling me a story and it was just getting good. he said. The nurse led him onto his side of the room and closed the curtain. She held up a towel for me to climb into and I accepted. I noticed, out of the corner of my eye, that Billie Joe had been peaking from behind the curtain, trying to see me naked. I turned my body so that he couldn’t see anything.
When I was all dried off and dressed, and so was Billie Joe, we went out into the courtyard. Billie Joe was always on watch by the guards here for some reason. They never took their eyes off of him. I asked Billie Joe why they did this, and he said that it was just because they admired his looks and wanted him deeply, but I knew that he was joking!
“Could you continue your story from the bathtub? he asked.
“Um...not right now. It’s sometimes hard to talk about. I answered.
“Why? I thought that it was a good story.
“Well, it doesn’t keep up with that routine of ‘good’.
“Oh. Hey...what do you wanna do?
“What do I want to do? Billie Joe nodded. “Well, I want to escape this place. I want to be with Derek.
“Well, basically everybody, including myself, has tried to get out of this place, but none succeeded.
“Well, they don’t have my mind. They are all mental.
“I’m not mental.
“Then why are you in here?
“Because, it’s better than jail! he shouted and then ran away from me. I chased after him and found him sitting next to Mike on a bench, watching Tre stroll around in his wheelchair. I sat down next to him, but he didn’t say anything to me. He just keep on cheering on Tre as Tre went as fast as he could from one side of the sidewalk to the other.
If Billie Joe wasn’t crazy, what was he doing here? And why was he acting like he was? Something that I might not find out until he would warm up to me. But the fact that he mentioned jail is a mystery to me.
