The Secrets We Keep, chapter 2
Fall dragged by at an enormously slow speed. I turned 20 in October down in Oakland partying with the boys, then flew back to Minnesota to pack and spend Christmas with Mom, Darrell and Adie.
Two days later I was boarding a plane to Oakland. No more cold, no more frequent cross country trips, and no more ... Adie?
Adie had just stepped on to the plane was heading my way, grinning ear to ear. Once she had settled into the seat beside me, I turned and asked her,
"What the hell are you doing here?!"
She gave me a funny look. "Why do you look so surprised? It's not like Billie didn't tell you... "
"Tell me what??" I spat.
She look at me and the grin was wiped instantly from her face. She had obviously seen something in my expression that she didn't like.
"Oh ... that I ... err, that I'm coming down to help you move!" she said triumphantly.
"Mhm, convincing." I rolled my eyes and turned to the front to watch the in flight movie.
We arrived on time, and in all the hustle and bustle of the flight traffic, I tried to lose Adie in the crowd.
Glancing around the waiting room, I couldn't see Billie. There were old people, tourists, a couple making out, more old people ... wait a second.
I looked closer at the couple playing tonsil tag. They both had masses of thick black hair. My temper rose as I marched up to them. I put a hand on each of their faces and pushed them apart. I glared at Billie.
"Thanks for the warm welcome." I said, venom dripping from every word.
"I, well ... we-" Billie stuttered.
"I saw bloody well what you were doing. Now if you don't mind I'd like some help finding my luggage so we can get the hell out of here and back to the apartment."
I turned and went towards the luggage rack before I noticed neither of them were following.
"Well?" I spat.
Billie looked from me to Adie and back again sheepishly. "Urm, there's been a slight change of plans. Adrienne's coming to live with me."
"Well that's stupid." I replied, "there's barely enough room in that place for one, let alone three."
Adie stepped forward, head lowered. "Well, that's the thing. There's only going to be two people living there you see."
It took a minute, but my brain finally clicked.
"SO WHERE THE FUCK AM I SUPPOSED TO LIVE??" I yell.
Billie cautiously came towards me. He handed me a piece of paper with an address and directions on it. "There." He said.
I glanced at the paper and new exactly who held residence there.
"You've GOT to be kidding."
"He's more than happy to have you as a roommate."
"Well, that's because it's HIM." I replied.
"You're not still mad, are you?" he asked.
I looked at him, fire in my eyes. "Let's just say you've got more to worry about now than what'll happen if you take my ice cream sprinkles." I said as I walked away to retrieve my luggage.
