An Old Friend, A New Love, chapter 1
Teenage friends, memories, love. They go by fast. Usually, you forget what happened when you were 15, right? After almost 20 years, you would think that you grew up and are passed the teenage years. Right?
Wrong.
"See you on Monday, Katherine." Jon called from his cubicle in the office. He smiled and waved at her.
"Later, Jon. Have a good time in New Jersey visiting your parents."
"Oh I will." He laughed.
"Bye, Jon." Katherine walked towards the elevator and pressed the button that had a black arrow pointing down.
"C'mon, c'mon... " She said, tapping the tip of her high-heeled shoes. She sighed, "God damn it get me out of this fucking hell hole."
Ding...
The elevator door opens up, and she walks in and places her black purse down on the floor. "Thank god," she said with a sigh of relief. She unbuttoned the top few buttons on her blouse that was under her grey blazer. "I'm fucking burning in this thing."
The elevator door opens up and she picked up her purse and starts walking out the elevator, heading towards the front door. She gives everyone that she passes a fake smile, and walks confidently out the front door. A cool breeze hit her face and she sighed. "Thank god." It was maybe about 8 o'clock at night, in Berkeley. The sky was beginning to turn into a dark blue. "Oh thank god it's a Friday." The last time she said that was, well... last Friday.
She walked over to her car, which was a black BMW. She opened up the door to the driver's seat, and sat down on the driver's seat, and put her suitcase on the passenger seat. She started the engine, and pulled away from her parking spot. She drove away from the parking lot, and started to head home.
After a few minutes, her cell phone started ringing. "Shit. Who the hell is it now?!"
She went through her purse and found her cell phone ringing like a madman. "This better not be Jon."
She looked at her phone and read, Larissa Roberts. "Hey Riss."
"Hey Kat. How's everything going lately?"
"Good, good. How's everything with you? The kids?"
"I'm great. Kids are good. Being the little naughty kids they were born to be!"
"Just like their mother, Riss. Just like their mother." Katherine laughed a little.
"Hey Kat, do you want to go meet somewhere? Just to catch up on everything? I haven't seen you for weeks and I just had to call you and ask if you wanted to hang for a bit. Y'know, have the old teenagers in us come out a little bit." Larissa laughed loud, and hard.
"Heh?"
"Oh c'mon, Kat. I know you still have your little teenage punk years in you. Even I have to let off some steam every once in a while. 15 years have passed since we were teens, and I still love to wear band tees and shit like that at home. I know even in our 20's we were still wearing those clothes."
Katherine laughed. Larissa was right. Katherine too, would also love to light up a joint after a hard day at work.
"Sure." Katherine softly laughed. "Why the hell not?"
"Great! Okay, I'll pick you up at your house around, 8:30."
"Awesome. I'll see you their."
Kat got bored after a minute or so of driving in a small traffic jam, and decided she would turn on the radio.
... dream and differ from the hollow lies... this is the dawning of the rest of our lives... on holiday...
"Hmm... That voice sounds strangely familiar... " The song had ended and Kat was still wondering why the hell she thought that voice was so familiar.
"And that was the band Green Day... " The announcer had said after the song's ending.
"Green Day... Green Day... Green Day... " Then it hit her. "Oh my god! Green Day! Sweet Children! Billie Joe and Mike! Holy shit I remember them... " Kat's face lit up as she started humming one of their older songs from an album called Kerplunk! The song was called One of my Lies.
She was still humming the song continuously even when she got into her home. She put her purse on the ground, took off her heels, and let down her hair and ruffed it up a little bit. She ran up stairs and had decided to put on some jeans and a white t-shirt. It was a little cool out, so she decided to put on a thin, black sweater. She then combed out her hair until it was almost pin straight. She then put on some heavy eyeliner, just because she had some bags around her eyes because of her job. It made the effect look like it just smudged.
Ding-dong...
Larissa was there.
"COMING!" Kat screamed from up the stairs. She trudged down the stairs and walked over to the front door and opened it. "HEY RISS!!!"
"Hey there Kat!" She came in and gave Katherine a hug. "Ready to go?"
She nodded. Katherine closed the door to her house and locked it. She shoved the keys in her pockets and started following Larissa to her car.
"Damn, Kat. If I have a car like that, I could go anywhere and everywhere." Kat laughed.
"So, exactly where are we going?" Kat still had no clue.
"To this diner. I think it's somewhere in Emeryville. It's a good place to eat. Yummy."
"It's called... "
"Can't Fail Café. C'mon enough chit-chat let's go." Kat slid into the passenger seat while Larissa went around the car to go to the driver's seat. Larissa started the engine and they were on their way.
There was a few minutes of silence in the car until Katherine had spoken and asked Larissa, "Do you remember Billie Joe? And Mike?"
"How can I not? Green Day was awesome. They kicked some major ass."
"They still do."
"What?" She looked over to me with confusion. "What are you talking about? I thought they were done. To think they would be... "
"No. They're pretty big. I heard them on the radio when I was driving home. They sound the same, yet, different."
"NO SHIT THEY WOULD SOUND DIFFERENT!!! THEY'RE THE SAME AGE AS US! THEY STARTED AT AROUND 18 YEARS OF AGE." She turned on the radio and flipped through the stations to see if she could recognize a new Green Day song.
... Coming to you with the latest and greatest, is 101.1 Jack FM... Here's a band that came out with an album called American Idiot that sold in the high millions. Here they are, being the badass punk band they are, Green Day.
They're song Jesus of Suburbia had come on and both girls were silent, listening to the song.
"I told you they sounded dif-"
"Shh... let me listen" Riss said quietly cutting off Kat. They were silent the whole ride to the restaurant, listening to the song. "Damn this song is long." Riss stated. Kat agreed. The song had ended and Riss's jaw dropped. "Oh my god! They sound so, different! But in a good way... but, so different!" It sounded like Riss was hyperventilating.
Kat laughed. "Okay, Riss. Relax. C'mon, we're here already let's go."
"How'd you know we were here already?"
"It says 'Can't Fail Café' over the top of the restaurant." Kat pointed to the big sign.
"Oh... "
Kat laughed. "C'mon loser, let's go." Kat grabbed Riss by the hand and dragged her into the restaurant.
*
Larissa let out a little burp. "I'm full."
Kat laughed. "I think I've had enough for tonight." It was pretty hot in the restaurant, so Kat decided to walk out and get some fresh air. Larissa went to the bathroom to, as she would put it, 'freshen up'.
Kat walked out of the restaurant, and sat down on a curb that had a light over it, so she could see what she was doing. She took out a joint from her pocket and lit it up. She breathed in and let the smoke fill her lungs. A breeze came and she let out the smoke along with the breeze. She looked up and saw the stars. It was a clear night sky, and it was beautiful.
"Katherine?" Kat looked to see who was calling her. Her eyes widened.
"Oh my god. Mike Pritchard? I mean... Mike Dirnt?"
Wrong.
"See you on Monday, Katherine." Jon called from his cubicle in the office. He smiled and waved at her.
