An Old Friend, A New Love, chapter 4

"...So yeah, we married around '92, and we had kids." Billie ended his conversation. Katherine and Billie got the courage to finally catch up with each other.

"I see... " Katherine said nodding, gathering up all the information she was given. "Well, I got a job as the editor-in-chief for the East Bay Express, I guess I'm making good money. I've been here ever since." Billie nodded. Ever since. He knew what she meant. She meant ever since they were together. Even though they haven't seen or talked to each other, as soon as they met, everything that they had done in their teen years, had began flowing through their heads.
They had a moment of silence, until Katherine spoke up. "What was that song you were playing on the guitar, before, when we were inside?" She threw away the rest of her cigarette. Then Billie threw out his.

"It's called Extraordinary Girl. It is on the American Idiot album." Katherine nodded. "Well it's about this girl, and y'know... well, the whole American Idiot album is like a story. About this kid, the Jesus of Suburbia. He's y'know, like the king of his 7-11. And what this story is, is about him, kind of like, him growing up, and what he's going through. Like he meets St. Jimmy, which can also be kind of like the other side of him, or a friend, whatever. And he meets this girl, Whatsername, who is the Extraordinary Girl."

"Ah... I see. That makes sense. I hate asking this, but do you think I can have a copy of your CD? It just sounds so interesting. Sounds a lot like my life was."
"That's what other people say. That this album reminds them of their life. But better yet, I can play for you. I'm sure Mike will want to, and Tre I can force him down into his drum seat. Or he'll just go by himself. You never know Tre, y'know? He's random. Way too much energy." Billie laughed. So did Katherine as she looked up into the clear, ocean blue sky, with only a few clouds dotting the sky.
Continuing to gaze at the moving clouds, she replied to Billie's offer. "I would love to hear you play." She looked deep into his green eyes.

"I don't ever want to talk to you!" Katherine said with her 10th empty can of beer in her right hand, flinging it to Billie. She was so drunk and her dark brown hair was messed up, looking curly, but still messed up. Her blood-shot eyes were huge, and her face was beginning to turn pale.

"What the fuck, Kat! I can't take this anymore! Stop being drunk all the time!" Billie threw the empty beer can that was thrown at him down on the ground, and walked out the door of her house. Katherine stood there, watching her last glimpse of his long dark brown-red hair, and young green eyes slowly disappear from view...

Katherine shook her head and her smile that she had given him had quickly disappeared. Letting out a small cough, she stood up, and walked inside the house. Billie sighed, and slowly got up, and followed Katherine. Walking down the stairs to his music room, he sees all of his friends sitting around each other still chatting, except for Katherine who was still standing at the bottom of the step.
"There you guys are! What took you so long?" Mike asked as he went to Katherine and kissed her cheek. She gave him a week smile, and went to sit down in her chair.

"We were just catching up." Katherine said with a smile, looking up to Billie. Billie nodded, and continued to walk down the steps.

"Uh, Mike, Tre?" Billie called out. They looked over to Billie. "Katherine wants a taste of American Idiot. Why don't we play Kat and Riss some songs?" Mike and Tre thought about it, and looked over to each other and both nodded.

Mike and Tre looked over to Billie. "Sure. Why not? It'll be fun!" Tre jumped off of his chair and walked over to his drum set. He began to start practicing.
"Yeah, we're off tour, and I would love to play again." Mike stood up, and walked over his bass, and put the strap over to his shoulder.

"Yay!" Larissa cheered. She fixed her chair so that she would be facing the band. Katherine sat down next to her. As Katherine fixed herself, she looked over to the band and saw them discussing about songs.

They got into their positions, and prepared to play. "This song that we are going to play is my favorite song on American Idiot. It's about Whatsername, kind of writing a farewell letter to the Jesus of Suburbia. It's called Letterbomb."
"What are they talking about?" Larissa asked with total confusion.

"Long story. I'll explain it another time. Shh. Let's let them play." A few seconds after Billie began playing his guitar, and a few moments later Tre came in with the drums. A few minutes later, Billie ended the song with only his guitar playing. Both Katherine and Larissa stood up, clapping, cheering, and jumping up and down. Billie stepped away from his microphone, and began bowing. Mike followed. All Tre did was stand up from his chair and began cheering like the girls. He felt as though he was once again in concert.

"Thank you, thank you." Billie laughed. "Okay now we're going to play a song that I had written about my dad. It's called Wake Me Up When September Ends." Katherine and Larissa both sat down. They knew that it was serious, because Katherine was there when he heard about his father. She was trying to comfort him. They sat down and paid very close attention to the song.

"Summer has come and passed,
the innocent can never last.
Wake me up when September ends.
Like my father's come to pass
Seven years has gone so fast.
Wake me up when September ends.
Here comes the rain again
falling from the stars.
Drenched in my pain again
Becoming who we are.
As my memory rests
but never forget what I lost
Wake me up when September ends."

Katherine and Larissa watched the guys play the song, wide eyed. The song was absolutely amazing.

The song had ended, and their was only the remaining echo of the instruments. Both Katherine and Larissa were glued to their chairs, their jaws dropped. "That... was... amazing." Katherine said, coming out of her trance. She looked over to Larissa, who was still staring at the band with amazement. Katherine snapped her fingers in Larissa's face, and Larissa shook her head. She looked over to Katherine, with her eyes wide.

"Oh my God." She turned to the band, waiting for her judgment of the song. "That was...amazing!" You could see the band let out a sigh of relief.

Katherine stood up and went over to Billie and asked him, "Bathroom?"
"Uh," he started, and looked up that stairs. "Go up the stairs go turn right and down the hallway. The door should be open." Katherine nodded, and headed in the direction of where Billie pointed.

Katherine walked out of the bathroom to see Jake sitting at the counter in the kitchen.

"Hi, um, Katherine." He waved to her. She waved back and headed towards the stool next to him. "Can I ask you something?" He said as he watched her sit down next to him. Katherine nodded. She sat down on the stool, and turned herself and gave him all of her attention. "How do you and that other girl no my dad?" He finished up the last of his few chocolate-chip cookies and his milk.

"Well, when your dad was still a little boy, maybe 9 or 10, right around the time his dad died, he was one of my closest friends. So was your Uncle Mike."
"Oh..." He said looking down at his hands. "Are you my dad's girlfriend?"
Katherine laughed. "No, of course not. He has your mom."
"I know. I guess that was a stupid question." He smiled.

"I saw you and Uncle Mike hugging. Do you love him?" Boy this kid was curious.
"Well, I haven't seen him in quite a long time, but I can tell you that, we're closer now more then ever." She gave Jake a smile and began to head towards the basement.

Walking towards the steps, she heard Jake yell, "So is that a yes?!" She looked over to hi, winked, and walked downstairs.

*

Katherine walked over to the front door, "Thank you so much for playing for us, Billie," She said with a smile where the edges of her lips almost reached her ears. "You guys are still the best."

Billie smiled and thanked her. "Oh, wait." Billie Joe ran up his stairwell and everyone waiting at the door had heard a door swing open and hit the wall behind it. Katherine raised an eyebrow. So did everyone else.

"Thanks for letting me stay for a little, Adie," Katherine said with a huge smile on her face. They gave each other a hug.

"Yes, thanks very much. We had such a wonderful time and your children are adorable!" Larissa said once Katherine had let go of her hug. Then Larissa had hugged Adie. They became good friends. Mike and Tre were standing behind the three of the girls talking to themselves.

"Wow, it's really cool that you saw Kat at Rudy's." Tre said smiling. "And Larissa, too. I mean she's just amazing." Tre said looking over to her. Mike raised an eyebrow, questioned.

"Yeah, I was happy too. We had such a great friendship that when I saw them, I decided everyone should meet again and then we'd have the friendship again, y'know?" Tre nodded. He understood and he remembered the memories that all of them had shared. They watched the three girls chatting, and then heard the pounding on the stairs, and then saw Billie running down the stairs. He reached the bottom, and was gasping for air. In his hand, he held a CD, that was colored black, and on it was a white hand, that had a grenade that was shaped as a heart.
"Here," he said catching his breath and handing Katherine the CD. "Oh shit. Let me get Riss a CD!" He started to head up the stairs again, still trying to catch his breath. Then his wife held onto the collar of his shirt.

"Honey, let me get it. Okay?" She gave him a smile and winked. Billie nodded.
"Damn I'm out of shape." Billie said with his breath finally normal again.
"That or you just have a really messy room!" Mike put his hand on Billie's shoulder. "Which is probably the real answer because it took you forever just to get a CD!" He had a smile almost reaching his sideburns, and everyone else couldn't help but laugh too.

"Ha ha, Mike! You're so funny!" Billie laughed sarcastically.
"Here you go, Riss," Adie said coming down the stairs. She smiled and handed it to her.

"Thank you very much." Larissa gave them a very big smile.
"Well, I guess we should be going now. It's almost 9:30. Larissa's kids are probably looking for her, and I am kind of tired." Katherine said.

"Yeah. I've been coming home late since yesterday, my husband might wonder and my kids might worry," She gave a wry smile. "My husband has been coming home late for the past few weeks. So I think my kids are home alone."

"Well, okay then," Billie said and then pulled open the front door. "Get out of my goddamn house!" He chuckled and held the door for everyone. Tre went up to Billie and gave him a hug.

"I love you shnookums!" He laughs and then walks out.
"Dumbass... " Billie said to himself smiling.
"See ya, Bill," Mike said and walked out the door and waited for Katherine and Larissa.

"Bye Billie! I'm so glad to see you again! Keep in touch, okay?" Larissa said hugging him.
"Of course! Of course, Riss. Bye." She walked out the door.
"Well..." Katherine said, smiling. "I guess I'll be seeing you around."
"Yup..." He said as he scratched the back of his head. "Well, bye." He gave Katherine a hug. She walked out the door, and the door closed behind her. Outside it was dark, and the stars were gleaming and dotting the sky. A full moon hung over them, and it was cool out. It was a perfect night. Katherine walked over to Mike and he hugged her. They held hands all the way to their car, and Larissa followed.

"Well, you guys, I'll be going somewhere else now. Bye!" Tre hugged Katherine and then Larissa. "See ya Mike." Mike waved to Tre. Tre walked into his car and turned up the music. It was some rap song. He made the volume really loud and pulled down the window. He gave a peace sign and started nodding his head up and down.

"Fo shizzle mah nizzle, bitches!!! WOOHOO!" He sped out of the driveway and quickly turned right and his tires made a screeching sound. Everyone laughed. That was always something Tre would do. He's the comic out of all of them. He was the guy that would just make you laugh. Of course, he did just that. But not only was he the clown of the group, he can act normal, too. He can be very loving and understanding when he wants to be.

"Well, there goes Tre." Mike laughed. Mike stared straight into Katherine's eyes, and he smiled. Slowly, his lips touched Katherine's. They held on to that kiss. Behind Mike they heard a loud cough. They turned around to see Larissa tapping her wrist and her toes. The two of them laughed, and Mike started to shuffle through his pant pocket for his keys. He unlocked his silver sports car, with the hood of the car gleaming under the stars. Larissa opened her door and jumped in, and got comfortable in her seat. Even though in his car it was almost impossible to feel uncomfortable, no matter what way you sit in it. Larissa sat back and let out a sigh, and watched as the Mike sat down in his black, leather seat behind the wheel and Katherine sliding into her passenger's seat. Mike started the car, and began to pull out of Billie's driveway. They had a fun day, and they promised to keep in touch with each other, if they don't see each other often.

Larissa gave directions to Mike for where to drop her off. They kept on arguing about where to go. Mike said that if they went the opposite way of where Larissa wanted to go, there would be a shortcut to her street. But Larissa was whining saying that it was busier where Mike wanted to go. But Mike had always replied saying that he was the driver and he will go the way he wanted to go. They had to pull over to the side of the road twice just to finish their argument. Katherine was sitting watching them, laughing.

After double the amount of time it should have taken them to get to Larissa's house, they finally got her home. She said goodbye and goodnight to the rest of the people in the car, and walked to the front door of her house. She opened the door, and Katherine and Mike only heard screaming from a man, her husband. She closed the door, and they heard her scream back.

Mike sat back, and just took in what he heard. "What was that?" He looked to Katherine with a worried face.

"Um... " She sat back in her chair. "I won't keep this from you. Even if I did you would have found out anyway. Larissa met this guy, Eric. And the thing is, Eric, he drinks, a lot, maybe too much. They went to a party -this was after we lost contact-, and y'know, they... " Mike figured it out. He nodded and said to continue. "When she found out she was pregnant, they were both excited. They started raising this one kid, and both of them were doing well as a parent. Very happy, and feeling great that they have a child. After maybe 3 years... Eric had began to drink more. Everyday, he would come home later than the night before, and she wouldn't know what to do. She would take care of the kids for the whole day. Whenever he did get home, the kids would be asleep, and they would start yelling at each other. She would wonder why he was late, and he would give some lame excuse. She dislikes this guy, sometimes. But a lot of times, when she sees him playing with her kids, she realizes that he's a great father. But unfortunately she only sees that every once in a blue moon. She just wants to stay together for her kids. So now, she's raising the kids, and hoping he'll do part of his job, so she can have some fun too, like today. She had tons of fun today. I don't usually see her as happy as she was today. Besides when it just us two, y'know?"

"Yeah...I get it. Poor Riss. I really wish I could do something about it." Mike sighed and began driving towards Katherine's house.

"Yeah...me too. I've tried. But she wants to handle this by herself. So I stepped back. I'll let her handle it." The rest of the drive was silence. Katherine's fingers were laced between Mike's, and when Mike pulled up to Katherine's house, they stayed inside the car. Mike sighed, and rested his head on the window. He was extremely tired. Katherine leaned over and kissed Mike on the cheek. "Tired?"
Mike nodded. He straightened himself in his seat, and then looked over to Katherine and said, "Wanna come to me house?" Katherine smiled. She nodded her head. "Well, then... " Mike started his car again, and they drove towards his house.

*

"Well, this is my home!" Mike opened the front door to a house maybe a little bit bigger than Katherine's. Her eyes went wide.

"Wow... " When you walked into the door, you see a small closet to your left, but to your right, you see a room with one wall almost all covered with bricks, and at the bottom of the big wall, you see a fireplace. In front of the fireplace was a rug that looked as soft as new fallen snow. Next to it was a white leather couch, that looked as comfortable as soft pillows. The room has been lit by a dimmed lamp, and the silent fire that glowed in the whole room.

"You like?" Mike asked as he closed the front door and hung up his jacket in his closet. He helped Katherine take off her sweater, and he hung it up in the closet as well. She walked over to chair that was cushioned, that was facing the fireplace, and she sat on it.

"I could fall asleep in this chair!" She felt the arm of the chair, and the threads of the fabric the covered the cushion. "Amazing... "

Mike walked over to where Katherine was sitting, stood in front of her, and leaned his hands on the arms of the chair. "Not as amazing as you." Katherine stared into his eyes, as blue as the sky on a clear day. His face was brought closer to hers, as she snaked her arms around his neck, and softly touched his lips with her own. She stood up and pushed Mike slowly to the couch, never letting go of him, and Mike sat down on the couch, and she sat down next to him. Then his tongue slowly slipped into her mouth. She let his tongue and hers wrestle, when she forced her hands up his shirt, and lifted the black t-shirt up and over his head. She threw it on the ground. She let go of his kiss, and she put her hands on his shoulder. She gave him a sly smile.

"You've had a long day..." She gave Mike a smirk. "Wanna take a shower?" He gave an evil laugh. Katherine laughed too. Mike stood up and led Katherine towards the bathroom.
