She's A Rebel, chapter 2
"Hun, you're gonna be late." Laurie's mom leaned herself on Laurie's door. Laurie's mom looked at her daughter's room. "Uhh, Laurie, what is up with these walls?"
Laurie slightly closed her closet door to see her mom, "What? What's wrong with them?"
"They're....black." Her mom had a look of disguston her tan face. Looking at her mother's tan skin made Laurie observe hers. It was pale. She never really liked sun-tanning. All you got out of it was looking darker, and comparing how darker you were to the person next to her. All her friends wish she would tan, but she refuses. She tells them that "she doesn't tan, she sunburns". After that, her friends leave it at that.
"So? It is my room."
"Yes, but I work for you to have these walls."
Laurie sighed, thinking of what to say as a comeback. Her mom noticed.
"Whatever. Laur, we're going to be late. Now come on." Laurie sighed and mumbled to herself. She got in the passenger's seat of her mom's red SUV. Laurie loved her mom's car. It was a car she'd like to drive when she was older.
"Mom?"
"Mhh?" Laurie's mom mumbled as they were driving.
"Can I put some music on?"
Her mom smiled, "Sure honey." Laurie smirked and pulled out her Ramones CD.
She remembered the day her friends asked her what her favorite band was.
"The who?" Andrea said cocky.
"The Ramones." Laurie said. She was beginning to get annoyed.
"Uhh..you're joking. Right? I mean, only freaks and losers listen to that kind of music. And you're neither one of them." her other friend, Kimberly, said to her.
Laurie instantly regretted even mentioning The Ramones. She smiled and began to laugh her best. "Yup. I'm joking. Ahh..I almost got you their Kim."
Kimberly didn't look like she believed that Laurie was really joking. But she shrugged it off and the trio walked to lunch.
In the car, Laurie put on "I Wanna Be Sedated". Her mom looked from the stereo in the car to her daughter. She had a puzzled look on her face. Laurie didn't notice. She was too busy listening to her favorite band. Her mom couldn't take the music anymore. She was hoping she would put on a pop song. She quickly reached for the power button and turned the music off.
"Hey!" Laurie exclaimed, "I was listening to that, mom!"
"I'm sorry honey. I..uhh..have a headache."
Laurie rolled her eyes, "Whatever."
A few minutes later, her mother pulled into the parking lot. Laurie jumped out of the car, taking her guitar along with her.
Laurie had been taking guitar lessons for a bit over a year. She never told her friends about her guitar; she didn't think they would understand. All of her friends were into cheerleading. They loved it. Laurie never really thought of it as a "sport". To her, it was a way for skinny girls to flaunt themselves to horny boys in the seats, who had their eyes fixated on only them. Of course, she would never tell them that. So she kept her opinions and interests to herself all the time.
As she was walking towards the door, she turned around and looked at her mom. "Uhh...mom? I was wondering..."
"What is it, dear?"
"Well...the lessons aren't too far from home. So, do you think I could walk home? I've been in need of some exercise."
Her mother looked like she was thinking, "Umm..well..I guess it's okay. But if you more than a half hour late, I'm going to look for you. Okay? So stick on the main roads incase of that."
Laurie smiled, "Okay, mom. Thanks! Bye! I love you!"
"I love you too sweetie." With that her mom drove off, heading for home.
After her lessons, Laurie started off to her home. She felt a bit wierd walking home by herself, but she wanted some time alone. She was always bothered by someone where ever she went. When she was home, her mother would bother her constantly with questions on her whole life. At school, her friends and Jimmy would talk and talk to her; half the time Laurie wasn't even listening. So finally, when she gets this time of nothing be said, she feels peaceful and relaxed.
Laurie was getting closer to her house when she saw someone walking towards her. She couldn't tell who it was because they were too far away. The figure came closer and closer. Laurie bagan to notice something different about the person; their hair. It was blue. She smiled, knowing who it was. When the two were face-to-face with each other, they stopped walking.
"Hey Laurie."
"Hey Billie Joe. What's up?"
"Not much." Billie Joe noticed Laurie's guitar on her back. "You play?"
Laurie looked at her guitar. "Yup. I'm just walking back from lessons."
"Oh. I play too. How long you've been playing?"
Laurie shrugged, "Like, a year and a few months. You?"
"Since I was ten."
"Oh. So six years?"
Billie Joe nodded. Laurie smiled, "Cool!"
"Yeah. My dad gave my Blue right before he passed away."
"Oh, Billie Joe, I'm so sorry."
"Billie Joe shrugged, "It's okay. I'm better than I used to be about his death."
There was a bit of silence between them, neither one knowing what to say to the other.
Billie Joe broke the silence, "Ya know, Laurie, you're not what I expected."
Laurie was confused. "What do you mean?"
"Well, at school, you seem like this prissy princess. Ya know, one that plays by the rules. You seem like, I don't know, the most popular girl in school. And, you don't seem like the type of girl to be playing guitar. You seem like-"
"-The cheerleader type?" Laurie cut in. Billie Joe nodded.
"I've heard that alot. Not just from you, Billie Joe." Billie Joe smirked at her.
"Umm..say Laurie? You don't listen to just pop, right?"
"Actually, I don't listen to pop at all."
Billie Joe was a bit shocked. "Do..what do you listen to?"
"Well, my favorite band is The Ramones.."
"No way! I love them!" Billie Joe said happily. "Okay. Well anyway...I'm having a show with me and my band at Gilman Saturday night. Maybe you wanna drop by there."
Laurie heard of Gilman but didn't really know where it was. Laurie told him her dilemma. "Oh! No biggie! Me, Mike, and John'll take ya if ya want!"
"Sure! But..uhh...who's Mike and John?"
"Mike my best friend since like, the fifth grade. He plays bass in the band. John is our drummer. He got us some street cred to start playing at Gilman. Now we're regulars there."
"Oh. ell, let me see if I'm not doing anything and I'll let'cha know tomorrow at school. Is that okay?"
Billie Joe smiled, "That's fine. See ya tomorrow, Laurie!"
"Bye."
Laurie walked home as fast as she could. She wanted to ask her mom as soon as possible. She wanted to go so bad. Maybe Billie Joe will give her that confidence that she needs if she hangs out with him. When she got home, she went straight to her mom.
"Hey hun. How was lessons?"
"Fine. Uhh..mom? I have to ask you something."
Her mother finished folding a shirt and placed it on the bed. She looked up at her daughter. "Okay."
"Well, I met this kid, Billie Joe. And he has this band. And he is hoving a show this Saturday and wants to know if I can come. So..can I? Please?"
"Absolutely not. I don't want you listening to that kid of rubbish."
"Mom! It's not "rubbish" it's music!"
Her mom had a stern look on her face. "Not in my house it is. Now go to you room. You are not going to that show Saturday."
Laurie gave her mom a 'look' and headed to her room. She sat of her bed and stared out of her window.
"I don't care what she says. I am going to that show." Laurie was determined to go; and she would do whatever it takes to go.
Laurie slightly closed her closet door to see her mom, "What? What's wrong with them?"
