She's A Rebel, chapter 8
Tuesday went by a bit rocky for Laurie. The morning was not good for Laurie. Her mother dropped a huge bomb on her. They were moving.
"Mom! We can't!" Laurie exclaimed, still tired.
"Laurie, we have to. There are much nicer homes your father and I found in southern California. And, they are much cheaper."
"I don't want to, mom," Laurie said, tears projecting out of her hazel eyes.
"I'm sorry, Laurie, but we are. We already bought the house."
Laurie sniffed, "When are we moving?"
School wasn't good either for Laurie. All morning at school she had been getting stares from everyone. Everyone figured out that Billie Joe was her new "love interest". They also knew Jimmy was torn about it. Of course, everyone was on Jimmy's side; feeling sorry for him and calling Laurie a bitch. By the end of third period, she was completely uncomfortable. She clutched her books tightly and walked on through the masses of people to fourth period.
Laurie paid no attention to the people in the hallways whispering things about her. She knew it would come sooner of later. But stare after stare, whisper after whisper, Lauire became more useasy. She knew everyone was against her. She began thinking if it was a bad idea to instantly go out with Billie Joe just after her and Jimmy were done.
"Hello, Laurie," Billie Joe said happily. Laurie turned around to stare at his large green eyes.
"Hi," she said distantly.
Billie Joe place a hand on her shoulder. "Hun, is everything alright?"
No, Billie Joe, everything is not alright. I'm torn between you and Jimmy. I don't know if I love you. I don't know if I still have feelings for Jimmy. Maybe this relationship isn't what I thought it would be. I think you're more into this relationship than I am. I don't know if I even want to be in a relationship with anyone right now. I don't want to break your heart, though. I've already broke someone's heart, causing them to harm themself. I don't want you to hurt yourself too over me. I'm moving, also, and you don't even know it. I'm afraid to tell you. I don't know what you'll do. I'm going to miss you. But, I wonder if it's better if I'm moving. Maybe this will prove if we really love each other.
"Um, I have to go," Laurie said, pushing her thoughts away. She walked past Billie Joe without even giving him a last glance and headed to her fourth period class.
Laurie couldn't concentrate in literacy. Her mind was on Billie Joe and Jimmy. She was torn. She knew she screwed things up big. She knew things now couldn't be fixed because they were messed up so bad. She wished she could go back in time and make sure none of this happened. But, then again, she doesn't. She would have never met Billie Joe. But, if she never met Billie Joe, she would still be with Jimmy. Laurie put her head in her hands, a headache was beginning to form.
"Laurie? Are you okay?" Her literacy teacher began walking towards her. The students began to stare, wondering what was wrong with Laurie.
She poked her head up and looked around, "Uhh, my head hurts, that's all."
"Oh, would you like to go to the nurse?"
Laurie shook her head, her locks of hair moving with her head. "Can I just put my head down?"
Her teacher smiled, "Okay. But, if you need to go to the nurse, just get up and go. I'll understand."
Laurie thanked and and placed her head on the cold desk. Seconds after she closed her eyes, she was asleep.
Thoughts of Billie Joe and Jimmy filled her mind again. She imaginged Jimmy and her still together, still happy. Then, she flashed to Billie Joe and her at the moment. They were happy as well. All of this was confusing to Laurie, even in her sleep. She didn't know what she should be thinking. Does Billie Joe make her happy, or did Jimmy?
The fourty-seven minute period ended. Laurie's teacher nudged her awake and told her class was over. Laurie sleepily got up and walked to lunch. She walked as slow as she could, not looking foward to hearing Billie Joe asking a thousand question about what was wrong with her.
Laurie opened the cafeteria doors, the smell of stale spaghetti filled the air. Billie Joe saw her and smiled, waving her over to their table. Laurie sat fown and didn't say anything.
"Hi, Laurie," Billie Joe said quietly.
"Hi," she said plainly. She mind was in another world. Billie Joe could tell. Her eyes looked glassed over, wandering off into what seemed like space. Her lips were pursed, obviously not moving.
"Laurie, is anything wrong?" Billie Joe was concerned about Laurie.
"I don't know, Billie Joe," she said, still staring off into space.
"Laurie," Billie Joe began pleading. He took her hand into his and stared into her eyes, not caring if she looked back or not, "Please tell be what's wrong."
He had no response from her. Tears looked like they were starting to form in her eyes. Billie Joe felt hurt. Something was wrong with the girl he loved, and she wasn't telling him what it was.
"Lauire," he began again, "what is wrong? I wish you would tell me. I want to know what's wrong with you."
"Billie Joe," Laurie started, "do you love me?"
"Of course I do, Laurie. Why would you ask such a question? You know I do."
"If I moved out of town, would you still love me?" She asked, still not looking him in the eye.
"Yes, Laurie, of course I would. I would call you everyday. I would visit you as much as I could. I would try and take you to as many of my shows that you could make. Laure, what is wrong?"
"Billie Joe, if I was moving, would you break up with me?"
Billie Joe was beginning to worry more and more with each question she asked. "No, Laurie, I wouldn't. Laurie, talk to me. Please. I want to know what's wrong."
"What if we never talked anymore? What if I never returned your phone calls? What if I never made it to your shows? And what if I didn't answer the door when you came? Would still love me then?"
"Yes, Laurie, I would." That got a smile out of Laurie, causing Billie Joe to smile, too.
Laurie's eyes darted quickly to Billie Joe's. "You really love me, don't you Billie Joe?"
Billie Joe nodded, "I do."
"Billie Joe, if I broke up with you, would you hurt yourself?"
"Define 'hurt yourself'?" he asked, getting suspicious again.
"Like, cut yourself, want to die."
"No, but, I would be very depressed."
Laurie folded her hands on the table, "Oh."
Ten minutes of silence went by, Billie Joe was not too sure what to say.
"Billie Joe," Laurie said breaking the silence, "I don't think we can see each other anymore."
"What?" Bille Joe was taken back.
"I'm moving, Billie Joe. My mom is moving to southern California and wants me to come with her. I don't think we'll see each other as much. I'm sorry. I didn't know how else to tell you. Please don't hate me."
Billie Joe was swallowing back tears, "I don't hate you Laurie. I still love you. Why can't we see if a long-distance relationship will work out?"
"No, Billie, I don't think it will. I'm sorry."
"When are you moving?"
"Next week."
Billie Joe didn't know how to handle the situation. The one person he ever truely love just said they were done. "Can we still be friends?"
Laurie weakly smiled, "I'd like that."
Billie Joe managed a smile, for Laurie. He knew she really didn't mean to hurt her, but it did.
"Well, goodbye, Billie Joe."
"Bye, Laurie."
Laurie picked herself up and walked towards the door. She felt horrible. She wondered if she should have done that. She also wondered if she should have told Billie Joe that she was moving tomorrow. She didnt know why she said next week; it just came out. But, she can't solve it now. She already dumped too much news on Billie Joe. Laurie hoped she did the right thing.
Laurie couldn't take possibly seeing Billie Joe in any of the last four periods, so she called her mom and told her she didn't feel well. Luckily, her mom believed her and picked her up.
In the car, Laurie was silent.
"So, Lauire," her mom began, "excited to start a new school in two days?"
Laurie sighed, "Sure, mom."
"I can't wait to see the new house."
"Yeah," Laurie said monotone, "neither can I."
"Mom! We can't!" Laurie exclaimed, still tired.
"Laurie, we have to. There are much nicer homes your father and I found in southern California. And, they are much cheaper."
