She's A Rebel, chapter 9

Billie Joe was restless that night. Thoughts of his and Laurie's previous conversation filled his mind. He missed her. He wanted her back. Though their relationship wasn't that long, he still felt like he'd known her his entire life. It felt like a part of him was missing without Laurie.

All his memories with her filled his mind. He remembered seeing her with a guitar strapped to her back; the first thing he realized they had in common. He remembered when he took her to his gig; she was so excited and impressed with his preformance. Then, he thought of the song; the one he dedicated to Laurie. No matter what would happen in the future, that song would always be for Laurie and only Laurie.

Billie Joe picked up his Daphne blue guitar. A deformied pick was found on the floor, and he picked it up. He observed the pick, wondering why it looked so messed up. He chuckled to himself, realizing is was from him chewing on it. He began strumming lightly, singing to himself.

"Sitting in my room last night, staring at the mirror.
I couldn't find a reason why I couldn't be near her.
'Cause you're the one that started to make me feel this way.
And every night I'm thinking about the words you'd say.."

He stopped playing; it was too hard to keep going. He felt weak, like anyone could attack him and he'd crumple up. Just thinking about a song written for her was heartbreaking to him. Nothing could fill this gap in his heart. The only thing that could, though, was having his one true love back.

"Come on, Laurie," Lauire's mother pleaded, stroking her daughter's brown hair, her natural red highlight glistening in the sun. "Can't you look the slightest happy?"

"Would you be happy if you were moving from the town you've lived in for what seems like forvever?" Laurie asked, attitude in her voice.

Her mother sighed, "What has gotten into you in the past few weeks? You've been...ruder than usual."

"Oh well, Mom."

"I hope to God a new enviroment will change your attitude, Laurie. You're such a nice, young lady. And, right now, you're not acting like one."

"Well, you know what Mom, I'm sick of it! I'm sick of you trying to make me your 'perfect princess'. I'm sick of never seeing Dad. He's hardly ever home. I'm sick of school. I'm sick of life. I'm sick of everything!"

"Lauire!" her mother exclaimed. "What has gotten into you?!"

Lauire dug her head into her hands, the smell of her kiwi lotion infuming her nostrils. "Mom, I finally met someone that likes me for me, not some pretty faced girl. I finally made a real friend and, I'm gone."

"Who's this friend?" her mom asked suspiciously.

"Billie Joe."

"Oh. A boy, I see.."

"Grow up, Mom! I really like him, and he really likes me. And now, we'll never see each other anymore. Thanks alot." She began staring out the window, obviously meaning she was done with the conversation. Her mother didn't push her luck and dropped it.

Their red SUV pulled up to the curb of the school. Her mother gave Laurie a smile. "Have fun at-"

Laurie slammed the door closed, not letting her finish her sentence. Laurie walked through the school doors, not noticing the usual stares from many of her fellow students.

Her mom sighed. "School," she said, finishing her sentence by herself.

Billie Joe wasn't looking foward to going to school. But, at the same time, he was. Whether Laurie still loved him or not, he was going to get her back. He couldn't go on without knowing she still loved him.

He walked to his locker and began working at his combination. "10-32-14," he mumbled to himself, remembering his combination. As always, books had to fall out. Cursing under his breath, Billie Joe began picking them up. Everytime he turned around, it seemed like more stuff fell out.

"Need help?" he heard a small voice ask. He knew that voice.

He turned around. "Lauire," he said quietly, almost like a gasp. "I...uh...yeah...sure." Lauire smiled and began picking up his books.

She looked up at Billie Joe. "Hey, I'm not your maid, I could use some help," she smiled, showing she was joking around.

That smile. That's the smile Billie Joe loved to see. Her teeth were so white, almost blinding, when she smiled. It was like she had a set of pearls in her mouth. She had the smallest teeth he had ever seen; they were like baby teeth. He fell in love with her smile.

And her eyes. They were the most amazing eyes to Billie Joe. They were hazel, the perfect combination of green and brown. Her eyes looked like they always had eyeliner on, even though a majority of the time, she doesn't. He didn't know it was possible to do that. But, after laying his own green eyes on Laurie's hazel ones, he was proved wrong.

Billie Joe noticed Lauire looking at him funny. He remembered he should be helping her. It was his stuff. "Oh! Sorry! Let me help."

In silence, the books were picked up. Laurie caught Billie Joe sneaking glances at her. He blushed every time she saw him.

When they were done, Laurie stood up and smoothed the creases out of her jeans. "There ya go."

"Thanks, Laurie," Billie Joe said. He smiled, and Laurie fell in love with him all over again. She didn't know why she broke up with him. At the time, it seemed like a good idea. Now, she didn't know what to think.

"Well, uhh, see ya around, Billie." And with that, Laurie walked down the long corridor.

"Laurie! Wait!" Billie Joe yelled. A few people looked, but he didn't care. He lightly jogged to a smiling Laurie.

"Uhh...Laurie...I was wondering if you'd wanna have lunch with me today," he said, rubbing him arm in embarrassment.

She tucked a long lock of brown hair behind her left ear. "Uhh, sure."

Billie Joe wasn't expecting a positive answer. "Great! I'll m-meet you at the w-water fountain right bef-fore lunch," he said, stuttering.

Laurie giggled. He seemed like a typical nervous kid, asking the girl he liked out. "Okay. Sounds great. Well, see you in first period, Billie Joe. Bye."

He felt lovestruck; all over again. He watched her walk away. He watched the way her hips moved side to side; not intentionally, that was just the way she walked. She softly flicked her hair to her side. He was so intent on watching her, it was almost as though she was walking in slow motion. It was actually like time was going in slow motion.

Just as he was watching Laurie, time didn't want to speed up for Billie Joe. He wanted lunch to come so fast, then slow down to as slow as possible. He wanted to spend his life with Laurie, and he was planning on telling her that. He didn't care what the outcome would be, he was going to tell her.

The clock ticked slowly. Tick, tock. Tick, tock. Tick, tock. The clock didn't seem like it wanted to go faster. It was mocking him, laughing in his face. It decided it was going to go slower to torment him. Billie Joe felt like he was going to go insane. Tick, tock. Tick, tock. Tick, tock.

Even though he was in a room with Laurie, he couldn't talk to her. Every second that went by, he wanted so badly to talk to Laurie. Just twenty more minutes until second period, he told himself. For the next three periods, this was how it went on.

Of course, with Billie Joe's luck, fourth period was as slow as it could go. And by then, the clock had been, by far, his worst enemy. It wanted to make his day miserable. Tick, tock. Tick, tock. Tick, tock.

Suddenly, the time jumped forward. What was just 11:13 was now 11:47: lunch time. The bell rung at 11:48 exactly, and Billie Joe was the first to jump up. He didn't bother going to his locker; all he wanted to do was see his one true love.
