The Course of True Love Never Did Run Smooth, chapter 15

*Joe's POV*

I stood over the stove, watching the French toast I made sizzle in the pan. I was making breakfast for Sadie. It was Mothers Day, and I wanted to make this day special for her. Sadie was in bed and probably wasn't going to be up for another ten minutes. Her alarm went off at nine.

Not only was it Mothers Day, but it was also the release date of the People Magazine featuring a spread of Sadie and me with Fiona and Jon. I had woken up early to drive over to the 7-11 to pick one up. I hadn't looked at it yet though. I wanted to look through it with Sadie.

I turned the stove off and plopped the toast onto a plate. I tossed the pan into the sink, but soon regretted it as it banged against the metal of the sink loudly. Luckily Sadie probably didn't hear since the bedroom is three floors above the kitchen.

I slid over to the fridge, quite enjoying wearing socks on the slippery linoleum. I grabbed a carton of orange juice and poured a glass. There was a little bit left so I drank the rest straight from the carton.

"Joe, that's gross."

Sadie's voice made me jump. I didn't hear her come downstairs. I tossed the carton in the trash and wiped my mouth.

"Yeah I know. Happy Mothers Day." I said, kissing her while managing to grab the plate off of the counter.

"Joe that's so sweet... "

"Yeah I know. That's what I'm here for." I said, as she sat down at the booth. I grabbed a fork and knife for her and took the magazine with our spread in it from off of the fridge and plopped in on the table so we could look at it. I scooted beside her as she put her fork down for a second. The picture on the cover was of Sadie and I standing on an Oakland street corner in the rain. I was holding up an umbrella, and we were wearing our signature bizarre clothes as usual. Sadie was wearing giant, round, white sunglasses and a red and white polka dotted dress. She was wearing a matching scarf tied around her head. I was wearing a white suit with a dress shirt that matched Sadie's dress, and identical sunglasses. The picture had turned out really well. In big bold letter at the top of the picture, it read,

"Hollywood's Most Fabulous Couple Introduce Their Latest Project...Twins!"

"Oh man, I'm so excited," Sadie said opening the magazine to the page that showed where all the different articles were.

"Me too. I'm glad we didn't have time to look through the pictures. Surprises are fun."

"For sure. Great toast by the way. I didn't think you knew how to cook anything."

"I don't. I had to google a recipe."

"Why doesn't that surprise me?" Sadie laughed, turning to page 14, where the first picture was for our spread. It was of Sadie and I sitting in our backyard by a tree. Jonathan was on my lap, and Fiona was on Sadie's. There was big article about the twins, and how Sadie and I are getting used to two new additions to the family. It talked about how they were premature, how Tre and my parents are liking grandparenthood, and a little square on the bottom that said 'Interview with Sadie and Joe on page 22.'

"These are good." I said, flipping the pages. The twins looked nothing alike. Fiona had straight, light brown hair and green eyes, and Jonathan had black curly hair like mine, and eyes that were just as dark.

Sadie was about to reply, but was cut off by the phone ringing. She picked it up and put it to her ear.

Sadie's POV

"Hello?"

"Morning Sadie. You look hot on the cover of that magazine."

I laughed. It was Ben.

"Thanks Ben. What are you up to today?"

"Uh, I'm flying to Carson City today to visit my mom for Mothers Day. I'm staying until Thursday. But before I go I wanted to wish you Happy Mothers Day."

"Aw, thanks man. So, how's working for Ralph Lauren treating you?"

"Uh...I actually got laid off last week. They had too many designers so they got rid of a few."

"What? Are you serious? That blows man."

"Yeah. So I'm looking for work now. I'm thinking of applying at Nygard."

"No. Don't work for him. He's an ass. Work for me."

"Wh-what?"

"I like your designs. Work for me."

"Are you serious Sadie? I mean I can just find a job somewhere else and-"

"Dude...it's a rough world out there. I'm hiring you because I trust you and I know you have talent."

"I...holy shit Sadie are you serious? You're hiring me?"

"Yes Ben I'm hiring you. You start work on Monday. I'll call my secretary and tell her to get you an office."

"Oh my God... Sadie, you seriously just saved my ass. It's so hard to get a job in this industry. Thank you so fucking much!"

"No problem Ben. I gotta go now. Talk to you soon okay? I'll email you the dates I want designs in."

"Okay. Thanks again Sadie. See you."

"Bye Ben."

I hung up, and looked up at Joe. His head was resting on his hand and he was smirking.

"What?"

"You're too nice you know that?"

"Well, why shouldn't I be?" I asked with a laugh. I sipped my orange juice and shut the magazine. We had seen all the pictures. I'd read the article later.

"So, has your Dad called you and told you anything about Live 8 this week?" Joe asked.

"Nope. Has yours?"

"He said he got us tickets to see the show. Most of the family's coming since they haven't played together for so long."

"Alright... But we can't bring the twins to a rock concert Joe."

"Well can't you just get someone to look after them?"

"Joe, they're still only a couple of months old. I don't really trust anyone enough to leave the twins with them. I mean, maybe family... but they're going to be at the concert, so I'm going to have to stay back. I'll just watch the concert on TV."

"Sadie, why can't you just get Ben to look after them or something?"

"Joe, you don't know Ben like I do. Kids scare the shit out of him. Plus, I'd have crazy separation anxiety from the twins."

"But I look after the twins all the time while you're out."

"That's different. You're their Dad."

Joe sighed and scratched his head.

"Sadie it's just one day that they're gonna be looked after by someone else."

"A lot can happen in one day Joe. Two kids are a lot to handle."

"Sadie why are you being difficult? I mean, you've got to know someone who you trust enough with our kids. If not I can just find someone."

"No Joe. Alright? The twins are still young and I don't feel comfortable leaving them with some stranger friend of yours."

"What, you think I'd leave them with just any old guy from the office?"

"Well I don't know! Just, go to the concert and I'll catch it on TV. I'm not going okay? I just really don't feel like arguing about this."

"Sadie everyone really wants you to be there."

"Well they're gonna have to deal with it. I'm sorry Joe but you know how worried I get about leaving the twins."

Joe groaned and pulled his fingers through his hair.

"Okay... fine."

"Thank you Joe," I said, kissing his cheek. He sighed and kissed me back. I smiled and sipped my juice again.

Joe and I had arguments here and there, and they were hardly ever major ones. Just little spats usually. We usually made up soon afterwards.

*Tre's POV*

I sat in Billie Joe's basement with him and Mike. We were rehearsing a new song that we were going to put on the upcoming album.

And yes, we had decided on making a new album. It felt great to be playing together after such a long break. But it was a break that was definitely needed. All this time apart had sparked up some brilliant ideas for songs that Billie Joe had conjured up.

"Okay so, we've changed the opening chords from A, E minor, A, F, to A, E minor, B flat, F," Billie Joe confirmed.

"Yup," Mike and I said in unison.

"Okay, cool. So, I don't know. We ready for Live 8? We've only been practicing these songs for two months...I'm not sure if that's enough time."

"We'll be fine. It'll be a really good show. The set we decided on is good," Mike said.

"Okay...so, call it a day then?"

"Sure. Let's split," Mike said, as we got up. I had gotten laryngitis so I wasn't talking much.

Mike and I left, and got into our cars. Before I went home I was going to swing by Sadie and Joe's. Sadie had lent me a book and I was going to give it back. It was so good I had finished it in two nights. I couldn't put the damn thing down.

I turned the volume up on my cd player and proceeded to drive down the busy Oakland streets, in hopes that Sadie and Joe would be home.
