The Course of True Love Never Did Run Smooth, chapter 2
*Jen's POV*
Wow. The ceremony was absolutely gorgeous. Mark and Bree really love each other. I'm so happy for them. I hope they stay together for a long time.
"Jen, do you know which way the bathroom is? I really have to go and I can't find it." Bree asked me.
The reception had just begun. Everyone was eating, and the deejay way playing music over the sound system.
"Oh, I'll take you.. follow me." I said, getting up from my seat and walking to the bathrooms with Bre.e. "So, how does it feel to be a married woman?"
"It's awesome. But, I'm not sure if I should change my last name."
"What's Mark's last name?"
"Uh... McGhee."
"Bree McGhee? Uh... maybe you should keep your own name."
"Yeah but, I don't want him to be offended if I don't take his name." She said as we walked into the washrooms.
"I'm sure he'll understand. Oh hey guys!" I said, noting that Sadie, Cathy and Bree's sisters, were in the bathroom, kneeling on the floor of one stall.
"Hey. Oh my God, you have to come here." Cathy said, who was looking at something.
"What? What's that?" Bree asked, leaning towards whatever the girls were looking at.
"It's a box that at one point, contained a pregnancy test. The receipt was taped to it." Said Meg.
"Uh, so?" I said, not knowing where they were going with this.
"We found it at the top of the garbage can, meaning it's recent." Meg added.
"Uh, okay. So, what are you guys doing looking in the trash can?" Bree asked, baffled by the weirdness of her sisters and friends.
"That's unimportant. The fact of the matter is, there was also a positive pregnancy test floating in a toilet. It must have not flushed down properly."
"Huh. Someone's pregnant. That's cool." Bree said, stepping into one of the empty stalls.
"No, but, don't you remember how weird Joanie was acting before? And, she said she had to quickly make a stop at the drugstore while we were getting ready! Joanie's pregnant!" Meg squealed.
"Wait, what? Joanie? I didn't think she was dating anyone at the moment." Bree said through the stall.
"Well, maybe it was a one night stand." Sadie said.
"Maybe." I said. "But, Joanie seems like such a proper woman."
"Well, everyone needs to live a little once in a while." Sadie added.
Bree flushed the toilet and washed her hands. We all walked out of the washroom together, and sat down at our assigned seats.
Soon enough, the deejay announced the first dance between Bree and Mark. They both walked up to the center of the dance floor and slow danced. They were both smiling at each other and whispering. They seemed really calm, which is surprising because they both get really nervous around big groups of people.
Other people started to get up and dance. Sadie and Joe, Joe's parents, Sadie's Dad and one of the caterers, and some other people whom I haven't met yet.
I took a sip of my soda, but someone tapped my arm. I turned around, and there was Mark's brother Michael.
"Hey. Uh, do you wanna dance?" He asked, looking kind of shy. Man, this guy was hot. How could I resist.
"Sure. You're Michael right?" I asked, as we both walked up to the dance floor.
"Yeah. And, I didn't catch you're name before. Something with a J?"
"Yeah, I'm Jen." I said smiling. We got to the dance floor and he put one arm around my waist, and held my other hand in his. I put my free arm around his shoulders. We continued to dance the night away.
*Bree's POV*
*9:00*
Wow. I'm finally married! This is amazing. It's such a cool feeling. I really do love Mark loads. I was so surprised when he proposed. It was totally unexpected.
Well, all in all I'm also bemused, but astonished at Joanie's pregnancy. I've decided, I'm going to confront her.
Joanie was in the bathroom, so I quickly followed her.
"Uh, Joanie?"
"Bree? Is that you?" Joanie said through the stall.
"Uh, yeah. I kind of wanted to talk to you about something."
"Sure. Go ahead."
"Um... so are you really pregnant?"
"What?! I'm not pregnant!"
"Huh? Well then, why'd you buy that pregnancy test?"
"Wait, how'd you find it?"
"Some of the other bridesmaids found the box and the receipt in the trash. The test was floating around in a toilet, and it was positive."
"It was positive?! Oh my God!"
"Wait, do you know who's it is?"
"Uh, yeah. But I can't say. But, the person who needed it told me to get it for her because she was having trouble zipping up her dress in the suite, and the whole pregnancy thing had been bugging her all day. She had to know."
I thought about what she said for a minute, then my eyes widened.
"Wait, her dress was stuck?"
"Yeah."
"So she must be one of the bridesmaids!"
Joanie gasped.
"Shit! Me and my big mouth... "
"Okay. But, you were the only bridesmaid that wasn't with us in the washroom. That can only mean one of the girls was bluffing!" I exclaimed, hopping up nervously. Joanie flushed the toilet, came out, and washed her hands. She then turned to me with a very serious look on her face.
"Bree, please don't snoop around this. I mean, I know it's exciting, but you'll find out eventually. Whoever it is will tell you at some point. I'm just saying, please be careful. Cuz the girl who's pregnant was a nervous wreck when she asked me to buy the test, and she was really scared. Now that she knows for sure she had no idea what Joe will say."
"Huh... Well Joe's a good guy. He'll understand... OH MY GOD IT'S SADIE!" I hissed.
"Damn it! I have got to learn how to keep my mouth shut." Joanie said, shaking her head dismally.
"Oh... Oh my God. Sadie's pregnant... " I said to myself, trying to hold back tears. My Sadie? Punky, carefree Sadie is gonna be a mom? I couldn't believe it.
Suddenly, a voice came from behind me.
"She is? Oh my God... "
I slowly turned around. Someone else knew. This was definitely not good.
I looked at the person who was behind me, and gasped.
Joe's mom.
"Oh shit." I said frantically. "Mrs. Armstrong, you weren't exactly supposed to hear that. I just found out too. Sadie knows Joanie knows, but she doesn't know I know, and now you know so we can't tell anybody. Sadie doesn't want anybody to know." I said nervously.
Adrienne's eyes started to brim with tears, as were my own.
"Uh, I'm gonna head out of here. Please don't let anyone else know." Joanie said, scurrying out of the bathroom.
Adrienne put her hand to her mouth as Joanie walked out.
"I... I can't believe it. My baby Joe is gonna be a Dad. I... I'm gonna be a Grandma. Oh my God... "
Now we were both definitely crying. Me couldn't help but hug. I really didn't know Mrs. Armstrong well, but at a time like this, hugging seemed necessary.
"S-So... we have to promise each other we won't tell anyone." I blubbered.
"Right... So, we're gonna have to keep this a total secret."
"Right... This is gonna be tough."
"Definitely."
*Sadie's POV*
It was the end of the night, and I was getting into the van with Joe. It was late, and we had to get back. I wasn't even all that sure of what time it was. He pulled out of the lot and started to drive down the busy street.
My head was still spinning. I was a wreck. I was so scared. A baby? Me? Sure, I had thought about kids loads of times, but I'm still pretty young. Well, then again, Ramona's got a kid already, and another on the way due in early December. It's early October now, so that's not too far away.
I still can't believe I'm pregnant. Man, the tabloids will be all over this. And what will Joe say? I know he's so happy with the way things are now. He might not be as happy if we have a baby.
Oh my goodness. What if he gets mad? He is known for getting pissed at stuff that 'corrupts his peace', so to say. He really gets mad at birds in the morning, if they wake him up. If a noisy bird bugs him now, I can only imagine how he'll be with a baby.
Oh shit. I can't believe this. I mean, it's just so surreal. There is a living being in my body, and will someday become a human.
Now, I don't want to sound sad. I'm happy! I really am! I'm just scared... and unprepared.
"Hey, Sadie?" Asked Joe, looking at me with squinting eyes. He often squinted when something was bugging him, or if he was contemplative.
"Yeah?" I asked, trying to keep myself together. I didn't know when I was going to tell him.
Joe turned a corner first, and then asked me a question while we were at the red light.
"Sadie, is everything alright? You're acting differently." He said.
Oh shit. Am I really acting differently? What if he knows?!
"No Joe. I'm fine, really."
Joe looked at me with a sort of concerned expression, and then looked back at the road. He started to drive again.
"Okay. Just making sure."
Oh God. I hate lying to him. I hardly ever lie to him. I quickly changed the subject to take my mind off of things.
"Uh, so did Mark by any chance ask you why we're not married?" I said with a forced smile. Joe didn't notice I was faking it or anything.
"As a matter of fact he did. I had no idea what to tell him, so I just told him to ask you." He laughed. God I love his laugh. It kills me to know I just lied to the sweetest guy in the world.
"Really? That's funny. Bree asked me too, and I just spurted out the first thing that came to mind."
"And, that was?"
"That we were afraid of commitment." I laughed. And surprisingly enough, it was a real laugh. It felt good to laugh for real after having faked a happy smile all night.
Joe laughed at that, and made another turn.
"Good one. She probably fell for that."
"Yeah, she definitely believed me."
We were quiet for a second, but then Joe spoke up.
"So, did you see your Dad with that waitress?"
"I did actually. Man, 48 years old and he's still a major ladies man." I said with a giggle.
"Yup. Well, you looked really nice tonight. Your hair is pretty." Joe said, touching one of the lilies in my hair.
"Thanks. You look pretty spiffy yourself. I've never seen you in a plain tux before."
"Yeah, and for a good reason. It's so plain."
"True, but you still look really nice in it."
"Ah, Sadie. Always looking on the bright side." Joe laughed. Nudging me in the arm as we pulled into our street.
Wow... if only he knew what I was thinking now. Not exactly looking on the bright side to say the least.
We pulled into the driveway of our home, and Joe opened the garage door with the remote that was left in the cup holder. The door opened up and Joe parked inside. I got out with Joe as he closed the garage door, and we walked into the house.
I plopped my purse onto the floor as Joe stretched out his arms.
"Well, I think I'm gonna have a bath. Care to join me?" Joe said smiling.
Aw... I couldn't say no to that smile. Despite how crappy I was feeling. Plus, I was still feeling a little ill. Oh well. He'll know soon.
"Sure Joe. I'd be honored." I laughed, taking my shoes off. Joe took his shoes and socks off, plopped them by the shoe rack. He lifted me up off my feet and carried me upstairs. It was always really funny when he did that.
We made our way to our bedroom that had it's own Jacuzzi and a fireplace. Joe started the fireplace up as I ran the water in the tub. I pulled my clothes off and stepped in, as I waited for Joe to get the fire going. It took him a minute, but it was worth it. It was a nice fire, and the bath was warm and filled with bubbles. I turned the jets on, and Joe quickly pulled off his tuxedo and green boxers he had bought just days ago.
He stepped into the bath with me, and sat on my lap leaning back with the back of his head on my left shoulder. I kissed him on the cheek and smiled. He was beaming. He tended to grin madly when we got 'intimate.' I can't blame him. I'm dead sexy.
Oh jeez, I'm turning into my Dad.
Suddenly, the thought popped into my head. Should I tell him tonight? Maybe I could. But, I'd have to wait for a good time. But then again, I could just wait till tomorrow. Yeah... I think I'll wait.
"Sadie?"
"Yeah?"
"Doesn't it squish your boobs down when I sit on you?" Joe asked, but with a joking tone.
"Nah. I sleep on my stomach all the time. It doesn't hurt." I laughed, kissing him again.
Well, that's gonna change. With a giant belly the size of a watermelon I won't be sleeping on my stomach anymore.
"Really? Like, it doesn't hurt at all?"
"Nope."
"Cool."
"Very cool." I added, grabbing a bottle of shampoo. I felt like washing Joe's hair.
I squirted a little bit of the thick green substance into my hand and massaged it into Joe's hair. He laughed when I did that. Joe was really ticklish.
We continued to wash each other and whatnot, until our hands were pruny and the fire was dying out. Joe turned the jets off and unplugged the tub. He got out of the tub and wrapped a towel around himself. He tossed me a towel as well, and we both dried off quickly. I slid into the bed as Joe flicked the lights off. He stumbled back into bed, not being able to see well because of the darkness. He climbed on top of me, and we ended the night off on a good note.
*Adrienne's POV*
I slid into bed with Billie Joe, still astounded by the shocking realization that Sadie was pregnant. This was so amazing. The thought of Sadie being a Mom, and my little Joe being a Dad was just astounding.
I feel for Sadie though. I can't blame her for being scared and not wanting anyone to know. I was really frightened when I was pregnant with Joe. But I found out at the same time Billie Joe did. But for Jakob I knew before Billie Joe. But he was my second child so I guess it was different then what Sadie's going through.
"G'night Adie. Love you."
"Love you too Billie."
I turned over and went to sleep, feeling bad about keeping this from Billie Joe. I'm sure he'd be ecstatic if he learned he was gonna be a grandpa.
I still can't believe I'm gonna be a grandmother. Having a baby that I can play with all I want, but not having to change its diaper or wake up in the middle of the night to feed it... well that's quite the deal.
I still can't believe my little Joe's a daddy. I remember the day he was born like it happened this morning.
Well, I better get sleeping. I have a big day ahead of me...
Dinner at Joe and Sadie's house.
Wow. The ceremony was absolutely gorgeous. Mark and Bree really love each other. I'm so happy for them. I hope they stay together for a long time.
