Christmas Lights In The Middle of August, chapter 5

At first glance Dave could have sworn she was an angel. She wore a simple white dress with a few daises adorned in her shoulder length, light reddish brown hair. She had sapphire blue eyes and a smile that could light up the darkest corner in hell. She broke their trance when she giggled slightly and raised her hand to wave at them.
"Hello, are you guys alright?" she asked with a giggle. The boys exchanged glances and then blushed. Joey held out his hand.
"Peace be with you," he said shyly. She smiled sweetly at him and shook his hand. She repeated the line he had just spoken. She turned to Dave who had fallen back into the trance.
"Is he alright?" she asked Joey. He looked at Dave and laughed. Dave was just staring at her and taking in her beauty. Joey shrugged.
"It's been a while since he's seen a pretty girl I guess," Joey said. She smiled and placed her hand on Dave's which was resting on the pew. Dave's eyes lit up immediately.
"Well, peace be with you," she said. She smiled one more time before turning back around. Right after their short interaction with the girl, Joey practically had to pull Dave down with him to kneel, Dave brought his hands to his chest and interlaced his fingers to act as if he was praying. Joey watched his friend's eyes wander over the back of the girl. The girl seemed to be alone, she didn't look anything like the people she was sitting near. Joey decided to try and pray so he closed his eyes and began rehearsing the Our Father in his head.

After receiving the Eucharist the boys returned to their seats and waited for the priest to finish up and leave the alter. When mass ended the group of orphan boys exited the church along with the many other people who had attended. Joey had watched the girl in front of them leave before them and slip outside, he was pretty sure Dave saw her leave as well. When they finally got out onto the sidewalk they felt the hot sun shining down on them and they had to squint to look for the girl since the sun was so bright. Dave spotted her first, she was crossing the street and headed in the complete opposite direction of the orphanage. Joey knew there was a day like this in every man's life; do you follow your heart and chase the girl or do you be a good little boy like he had always been and go back to the orphanage? Sister Myers and the rest of the boys were already walking away from the crowd congregated outside the church, this was the perfect chance to get away.

Joey looked to Dave who was already looking at him with a smirk on his face. Clearly Dave had been thinking similar thoughts to Joey's. But Dave was more of an action man, while Joey tended to think more than do. Joey motioned for his friend to follow the other boys but Dave shook his head. It was too perfect of a chance, even Joey had to see that. Joey looked back at the group of boys and the bitchy little nun who had kept him on his toes for the last six years of his life. Could he really go back to that when he had the opportunity to run away and be free?

"Dave.."Joey began but Dave cut him off before he could finish.
"No Joey, you go back if you want, but I can't. This is the chance I have been praying for all my life and I'm going to take it before it is too late. You're my best friend but I know how you are Joe. I will understand if you don't go with me, but I ask of you to say nothing if Myers or any other nuns ask where I've gone. I can't go back Joe, not when I have a perfect escape like this," Dave said with a fire in his eyes. Joey had never seen this look from Dave before and there was a chance he would never see it again. Joey nodded and watched Dave run off after his angel. Joey stood still for a moment and thought. Without further hesitation he ran off after his friend, he couldn't imagine going back to the orphanage just to sit and eat a plate of week old chili.
