A Fork Stuck In The Road., chapter 1
The bus came to a halt at my stop. I climbed out of my seat and walked down the isle to the front of the bus.
"Thanks," I murmured to the bus driver, as I stepped of the bus.
I walked a couple of feet from where I was standing, and put down my schoolbag. I got my MP3 out of the top pocket of my blazer, picked up my bag, and set off, walking down the street. The sun was out, and it was really warm for four thirty in the afternoon. Five minutes later, I had reached my house. I lived with my family: my mum, dad, and my younger sister. Our house was actually pretty big; we were well off.
I pulled my house key out of my bag, and opened up the locked door. I walked into the foyer.
"I'm home!" I shouted to no one in particular.
"Errmm... sweetie?" I heard mum call from the dining room, "could you come here for a minute?"
I put down my bag and made my way to the dining room. Seated at the dining table were four people; two of which I couldn't identify, as they had their backs to me. The other two were my parents. I was surprised, as dad rarely got home before seven.
No one at the table was talking, and it didn't seem as though the two other people knew I was in the room.
"Em... ." My mum trailed off.
At the mention of my name, the two strangers quickly turned around in their seats.
I almost had a heart attack, right there and then. Staring at me were two people I recognized as Billie Joe Armstrong and Adrienne Armstrong.
"Oh my god" I whispered, not moving from where I was.
I looked back and forth between Adrienne and Billie Joe.
"What the... what are... " I couldn't get the words out.
"Em," my dad said "we have something important to tell you. Sit down"
I remained where I was.
Dad sighed.
"Like you already know, this is Billie Joe and this is Adrienne," he said, pointing to them in turn.
Both Billie Joe and Adrienne smiled nervously at me.
"Right... " I said, try to understand the situation.
"Well, urgh, I don't know how to say this... ." Said dad
Adrienne stood up.
"I'm your real mum."
I just stared at her. The all look at me trying to see my reaction.
"Errmm, no, I'm sorry, but I already have a mum." I said finally.
"I'm not your real mum, I'm your step mum." My step mum said. By now, I was feeling really weird. I had just been told that the person who had helped raise me, the person who I thought was my mother, was just some random stranger.
"I'm sorry, we should probably start from the beginning." Adrienne said, sitting back down. I could tell this was going to take a while, so I pulled up a chair at the end of the table and sat down, never taking my eyes of Adrienne.
"Seventeen years ago, Billie and I had a bit of a rough patch in our relationship. He was constantly in the basement of our small house, and I was working all the time, because we were short on money. Then, in May 1989, my aunt died. She used to live in Australia, so that was where the funeral was being held. I came down here, and after the night of the funeral I went to a bar by myself. I met Simon," she said, referring to my dad, "and we talked for a long time that night, and I learned that he had just broken up with his girlfriend of four years. We both drunk a lot that night and, um we, well. . . ."
She trailed off. Luckily I could put two and two together. I toyed with the idea of pretending that I didn't understand what she was talking about, but I decided against it.
"Yeah, keep going" I said.
"So I went back to America shortly after that, and found out I was pregnant, with Simon's child. I told him and said that we couldn't raise a child at that time. Your dad had just got back with his ex girlfriend, Kirsten," she said pointing to my now step mum, "and proposed to her. They were in a far better financial state than us, so we agreed that I would have the baby, and give it to them." She finished, looking at me.
All of a sudden in all dawned upon me; it had all been a lie. My parents had been lying to me my whole life, and my real mum never wanted me.
"So you thought, after all these years you could just suddenly waltz back into my life?" I shouted at her shakily.
"No, em, I-" Adrienne started to say, but I just got up and ran to my room, slamming my door shut.
"Thanks," I murmured to the bus driver, as I stepped of the bus.
