What Did I Ever Do To You?, chapter 4

You can imagine the flight was completely awkward. I had no idea what I should do. So, I watched a father and his two kids as they boarded the plane. They put their luggage in this cupboard kind of thing above your seat, so I did too. Then, they sat down and started talking. I didn't have anyone to talk to, so I grabbed my tape player and a random tape from my bag and started listening.

I felt someone sit down next to me, but of course I didn't notice, because I was too busy singing along to "I Wanna Be Sedated" by The Ramones.

The stranger next to me tapped my shoulder, but I just ignored it. I didn't feel like talking - I was already missing Billie and Mike so much.

Again, I felt a poke in my shoulder, but I ignored it again. The third poke was a little harder, so I finally turned off my tape player and turned to look at the stranger.

"Hi, I was wondering if you could help me with this?" the very handsome guy next to me asked me, referring to his suitcase.

"Oh, uh, sure," I said, getting up.
He was about the same height as Billie, but he had a larger face. I'm not saying he was fat - no, far from fat - but it was rounder and sweeter. He had short, jet-black hair and piercing dark brown eyes, like mine. His skin was a little tanned, but it just looked like he was out in the sun for a whole day. He was drop-dead gorgeous. I couldn't take my eyes off of his arms as we both pushed his suitcase next to mine in the cupboard-thingy.

"So, is this your first flight?" I asked, uneasily stuffing my tape player to my other side as I tried to make light conversation when we were both sitting down again.

"Yeah. How about you?" he said with a small smile.

"Yeah, me too," I said. There was silence for a couple of seconds, none of us thinking of something to say. Then, he spoke up again.

"My name's Jack," he stuck out his hand, and I shook it.

"Holly," I said, smiling.

"So, Holly," Jack said, emphasizing my name. I almost melted, "Where are you headed on this lovely plane?"

"Um, well, I'm headed to college," I said uneasily.
He was a total stranger after all, a totally GORGEOUS stranger, but I didn't want him coming after me with a knife or anything.

"Me too! I'm going to Michigan University! How about you?" Jack said with enthusiasm.

"Same," I said, still smiling, but with noticeably less enthusiasm.

"So, have any idea what college'll be like?" He asked, turning in his seat slightly to look at me as we talked.

"No, but I hear they give you free soap," I laughed.

"Really? Wow, I never thought about that. Yay! I get free soap!" Jack said, with sarcasm evident in his voice. I laughed.

We talked for the rest of the flight, which was much more entertaining than I thought it would be, considering I was traveling alone.

Billie's POV

As we were heading out to my mom's car after we had dropped Holly off, I wondered something.

"Does she really think that we'll forget her?"

I knew that I definitely wouldn't. She was so... perfect. With her dyed fire-red hair and cute little brown eyes, she was amazing. And, I didn't think I could ever get over her, now that I've had a taste of her, and when we were boyfriend and girlfriend about a year after Mike and I met her.
But then she said she liked our relationship better as friends. I've still acted like a boyfriend sometimes to her, partly because it annoys her, and partly because I can't help it. I'm still in love with Holly.

Mike's POV

"Nah, I don't think she thinks we'd forget about her."

"What?" Billie said to me.

"We won't forget about her," I said slowly, and I meant it.

She was the girl I dreamed about every night, the one I thought about all hours of the day, the one I babbled on about when I was drunk. I knew that she went out with Billie for a while about a year after we met her in the cafeteria at school, but I was always jealous. Extremely jealous, the kind of jealous where I wanted to rip Billie's head off and grind it to bits, even if he Was my best friend.
But I wasn't stupid; I didn't tell Billie that I liked Holly. He rambled on about her every time that she wasn't around. He just kept saying how hot she was, but never said anything about her personality.
Personally, I think he only likes her because she's great in bed, although I could be just dreaming that. It's not like we ever had sex. But I do love Holly, in a way she's never known, or a way that I have never known could exist. I just hope one day I'll be able to show her that love.

Billie and I got in the car, he turned it on, and we almost sped out of the airport, for a reason I didn't know.
