Ruby is a 15 year old girl. She's pretty, gets good grades and is the star player of her softball team. She has loving parents and an older sister who she looks up to. She had everything going for her. But sometimes life has its troubles. Unexpected troubles. Some of us are better at handling them than others. Ruby is one of the unfortunate ones.

It was a cool Wednesday in April. Ruby and her best friends, Chloe and Adrienne were at the local 7-11 to pick up some junk food and hang out. They saw a couple of boys, about their age, standing around and not doing much else.

"Hey, let's go talk to them," suggested Chloe, bright blue eyes twinkling. She was definitely the biggest flirt of the three. Her straight platinum blonde hair waved in the light breeze as she glanced at the boys.

Ruby, who was just getting over a major breakup, was a little bit reluctant. Plus, she's shy to begin with. Adrienne flipped her dark hair and smiled at Ruby. "C'mon hun. Live a little. What can it hurt?"

"Hey ladies, what took you so long?," asked the shorter of the three guys. He had long-ish green hair and pale blue-gray eyes. Ruby noticed that Chloe had her eye on him. "They'd make a cute couple" she thought.

"Ugh, don't mind him. His name's Tre Cool by the way. I'm Mike and this is Billie Joe". He pointed to a guy with curly blonde hair and eyes that were an irresistible shade of green..

Ruby was immediately taken over by Mike's shaggy, dirty blonde hair and deep blue eyes.

"So, uh... What are you guys up to?," asked Ruby shyly. She always got that way around boys.

"Nothing really. We were just going to head down to the club on Gilman Street. Wanna come?," offered Billie Joe.

"Sounds like fun!," replied Adrienne. She sounded a little too excited to be going somewhere with Billie.

**Later**
When they got to the club, Ruby heard a local band playing and some people arguing about something. Something to do with politics. "I guess that's normal in a place like this", she thought. Then she noticed a peculiar smell. She turned her head and saw a group of teens passing around a joint. She was a little bit shocked at first but then decided it was normal too. She then realized that her friends had gone to the other side of the room as she was standing there watching the stoners like some kind of idiot.

She hurried over to where her friends were standing. The guys were carrying instruments and other equipment.

"Wow, you guys are in a band?", asked Ruby. Then mentally slapped her forehead. "Don't be so stupid!" she thought to her self.

The girls sat and watched as the guys set up their own equipment. Ruby couldn't help but be entranced by Mike. She liked the way his biceps hardened when he lifted the amps, the way his hair moved when he tried to shake it from his eyes. But mostly how his piercing blue eyes glittered in the dim light. She wondered if Adrienne and Chloe thought he was attractive too, or if he thought she was attractive...

***Mikes POV***
Ruby is cute. Really cute. No, more like beautiful. There's something different about her. Her sparkling smile, maybe her kind dark eyes, or her soft brown hair. She's so amazing, I hardly know her, but I just want to hold her in my arms and never let go. I wonder if she feels the same way about me...

"Mike, you okay there?", said a voice from across the stage. It was Billie.

"Yeah, sorry, just got a little sidetracked", he replied and continued setting up.

"Wow, they're incredible!", shouted Chloe, "And can that Tre guy play the drums or what?"

Ruby half smiled. She wasn't really paying attention to anything besides Mike's shy, harmonizing voice. "How perfect can one person be?" she thought...

"Where did Adrienne go?", asked Chloe. Ruby had no idea how much time had gone by.

"I'm right here ladies!" said Adrienne, holding a joint. "Wanna try it?"

Ruby was a little scared to try. She had never done marijuana before. She then decided that it was no big deal and took a drag when Adrienne passed it to her.

Never before had she felt so relaxed and comfortable. She felt like she was on top of the world and she could take on anything. By then, the guys, who said their band's name was Sweet Children, had finished playing. Mike walked over to where Ruby was sitting and sat down beside her.

"Hey Ruby. So what did you think of our band?," asked Mike hesitantly. He really liked Ruby. He never got nervous around girls he liked, but Ruby was different.

"Wow, you guys are amazing. Life is amazing", she replied, still under the effects of the drug.

Mike took a deep breath. "So, I was wondering... Maybe you'd like to go out sometime?"
Ruby sat up straight, replied with a quick "I'd love too" and flopped herself back onto the couch.
