Bury Me In Black, chapter 6

Who knows how long she was in there waiting. An hour? Maybe two, even three possibly. But they told her to go home many times. They kept telling her that there was no point in staying and she should leave her phone number with the person behind the counter on her way out. But she couldn't. She didn't have a phone and they would have no way of contacting her. So instead she just sat there and waited. She would have waited even if she had a phone, she couldn't bear the thought of leaving Travis there.

Finally the doctor came back out. "Look, it seems like your friend will make a full recovery. As long as he avoids head knocks he should be alright." Kelsie let out a huge breath of air. She was worrying so much that the damage would be more severe so she had stopped breathing for a minute. "We will have to keep him overnight to make sure there are no late effects. You may see him now."

And with that she jumped up and sprinted into the room earning herself a few evil stares from the hospital staff. As soon as she saw the familiar shape of Travis her face lit up. She ran over and hugged him tight into her body. She sat down beside him in silence. A comfortable silence. Neither of them had to speak because they already knew what the other would say. Kelsie was only allowed about ten minutes and then she was pushed out so Travis could get some rest. Kelsie smiled and did a small kind of skip.

Where would she go now though? She didn't know this area at all and didn't know what to do. She sighed, wishing she could stay in one of those comfortable beds in the hospital, as much as she hated the place. Anything was better than the gutter at the moment though. She spotted an old bundle of rags in a small alleyway and walked over to them. She shrugged and sat herself down against the wall, using the rags for back support and the rest to keep her warm. She sat there for a few hours watching the people coming and going, not wanting to sleep. Finally she couldn't keep her eyes open any longer and she fell asleep.

She hadn't dreamt often since she had left home originally. But that night she did. Her and Travis were back in the playground again. On the swings, faster and faster, higher and higher, until...

BANG!

But this time he didn't get up, and no one came to help...

Kelsie woke up in a cold sweat, breathing heavily and shaking. She stood up and walked back to the hospital. It was still early in the morning and she knew Travis wouldn't be awake, but she couldn't stay there any longer. She felt like she had to be closer to Travis otherwise something would happen to him and she would never know. She propped herself up against the outside of the hospital building and tried to get comfortable and go to sleep. But she couldn't go back to sleep now. She was too awake. Instead, she sat there wide-eyed, once again watching life pass by in front of her.
