Adeline Street, chapter 16
Billie progressed over the next couple of days. He started walking a couple of days later and did really good. The bruises healed rather quickly and he became as crazy as he ever was. "Man, I wish they would let someone bring my guitar. It's been 6 days since I played it," he said the night before he was to be released.
"Well, you can play the shit out of it tomorrow night," Mike said, clapping him on the shoulder, which made him wince a little.
"Not completely healed there, buddy," he said through clenched teeth.
"Oh sorry," Mike apologized, taking his hand away.
"You haven't said much, Kayla. What you thinking about?" Tre asked.
I looked up. I had still been thinking about the dream. I had been since that night and every time I saw Billie, it just made it worse.
"Nothing. Just a song," I lied.
"Yeah, I can tell when you're thinking hard," Billie smiled. "You start digging your nails into your palms."
"Huh?" I asked. Sure enough, I looked down and my palms had small semi-circle shaped marks in them.
"Oh," I rubbed the spots and put my hands in my pockets.
"You ok?" Mike asked.
"Yeah, fine," I said.
Billie didn't buy it. He never did.
"Hey, you guys mind if I talk to Kayla alone for a second?" he asked.
"You got one second," Tre said, holding one finger up in Billie's face.
Billie pushed him away and smiled. "Get out, Frank," Tre turned his pointer finger to a middle one and walked out the door. Mike followed.
"So what is it?" he asked.
"How do you always know?" I asked, staring down at the floor, trying not to make eye contact.
"We've had enough bad experiences to know when something's not right," he said, taking my hand again. I remembered the slightly labored breathing in my ear when he was kissing my neck and I got chills.
"So what's wrong?"
I felt sweat rising from the back of my neck. I sighed.
"Well, it's a dream that I had the other night."
"About?"
I felt his hips grinding against mine.
"You."
"Me? What happened?"
I felt the taste of his kiss on my tongue.
"You and me."
His eyes grew big. "What did we do?"
I heard his sexual whisper in my ear. 'Are you a virgin?'
"I think we were about to have sex," I finally said. My ears were ringing. He looked down my hand then back up at me. He leaned over and kissed me again, cupping the back of my neck. His tongue massaged against mine and I felt the intimacy I felt in my dream. He pulled away.
"You wanna have dinner tomorrow night?" he asked.
I looked at him and tried to joke. "I have dinner every night."
He smiled. "I mean just you and me."
I looked down at the mattress. Billie picked my chin back up.
"I just wanna talk more about this, ok?"
I nodded and he kissed me quickly on the forehead. "You wanna bring Mike and Tre back in?" I asked.
He shook his head and lay back on his bed. "I think I wanna get some sleep. I'm just ready to go home."
I nodded and kissed him on the cheek. I walked out to the parking lot, reliving every element of the dream and what happened back in the room. I knew he had more planned than just dinner and I was not expecting what I got.
I woke up the next morning and went downstairs to find a note from Adrienne.
Kayla,
I need you to pick Billie up from the hospital today. My sister-in-law is having her baby so I had to fly to Minneapolis. Joey and Jakob are at school and they come home at 1:30 today. They have a short day.
Thank you so much!
xxAdie
I sighed and drank a Smirnoff before I got dressed and drove up to the hospital. Mike and Tre were outside, smoking.
"Where's Adie?" Mike asked.
"Her sister-in-law is having a baby. She's in Minnesota. She told me to get Billie."
"Cool," Tre said, stomping out his cigarette. "He's dying to get out of here."
"I would, too," I said, following the guys upstairs. "Is he awake?"
"He was when we were up there, but he was bushed. He didn't sleep good last night."
"Why?"
"He said something about having a dream, but he didn't tell us what it was."
My eyes grew big. Maybe it wasn't about me.
We walked into his room to find him, sure enough, asleep and fully dressed.
"Billie," I said, shaking him awake. He looked up.
"Ready to go home?"
"Since the first day I got here. Where's Adie?"
"Tanya is having her baby. She went to Minnesota."
Billie rubbed his eyes. "Ok."
He got up and we got his bag. We checked out at the desk and Mike and Tre headed to Mike's car while Billie and I headed to mine.
"So I heard you didn't have a good night," I said, flipping through my CDs.
He looked over at me and then looked back down. "Yeah."
"Was it me?"
After a second or two, he nodded.
I sighed. "Why do we keep doing this?"
"I don't know. It's weird. I mean, you're 17. I'm 34. And married."
"Yeah," I agreed.
"We'll worry about it later tonight. We can take Joey and Jakob over to Mike's and go to O'Charley's and have dinner."
"Ok," I said and cranked the car, sliding a CD into the player, trying to change the subject.
Pretty Fly for a White Guy by The Offspring came on. Billie started laughing.
"You have strange taste in music."
I laughed and started singing. He began to sing with me and we started dancing and head banging.
We stopped at a stop light, still dancing and singing. A woman in an SUV and her teenage daughter were in the car next to us, staring.
I started to roll the window down.
"Don't you dare!" Billie said laughing.
I rolled it all the way down and turned it up. I looked over and waved, so did Billie. The girl's eyes grew big and she started talking excitedly to her mom.
We laughed at her and I looked at the clock. It was 1:20
"Guess we better go get the boys. They get out early today."
Billie nodded and we continued to sing. The song went off and White and Nerdy came on.
"Man, are we seriously gonna pull up at their school blasting this shit?" Billie asked.
I made a fake thinking face and nodded and he laughed. "They're gonna kill you."
I turned the volume down a little and pulled into the parking lot and watched for the boys to come out. The bell rang and Joey got to the car and I turned the volume up.
"Oh my god, unlock the door!" he said, semi-laughing.
"Sorry, it won't unlock!" I said, pressing the lock button over and over. Billie had his head in his hands laughing.
"Open the door!" Joey screamed.
I finally unlocked the door, unable to breathe from laughing at the look on his face.
He leaned up on the console between me and Billie.
"You know I hate you right?" he smiled. I gave him a half-nelson hug.
"Aww! I hate you too, Joseph!"
We drove home singing Weird Al and making fun of Joey. He was such a good sport like his old man.
We spent the day just lying around and at about 7 we dropped the boys off at Mike's. We got to O'Charley's and were one of only a couple of people there.
"What do you want?" he asked, looking down at his menu.
"Dunno. Never eaten here before."
"Never? Even before you came here?"
"Nope."
I found something that looked appetizing and chose that. We ordered then sat and talked about everything from my childhood to his crazy days before Green Day. We never talked this much before.
"So Mike shit in a pot and put it on her stove?" I asked, completely being able to imagine Mike doing something like that.
"Yeah. That girl had a job the next day," he laughed. Our eyes met once again and my face got hot.
"You're food, sir," said the waiter, breaking Billie's gaze.
"Oh, thank you."
"Mam," the waiter smiled at me.
I smiled at him and we began eating in silence. We finished and Billie paid for our meal.
"You wanna go to the beach or something?" he asked.
"Sure," I agreed. We got back in his car and drove down to the beach. We walked down the steps to the seaside. The moon was bright that night. I got a chill from the sound of the waves crashing against the rock, spraying chilly mist on my face. Billie wrapped his arms around me and rested his chin on top of my head.
"So what happened in your dream?" I asked him, keeping my eyes on the water.
"We were at Mike's for dinner. Adrienne went home early and Mike fell asleep. We went upstairs and well..."
"We had sex?"
"Yeah."
I could just imagine it. I remembered the feeling of ecstasy I got when he would kiss me and I suddenly wanted to feel his hands on me again. I tried to shake off the feeling but he must have felt the same way. He turned me around to face him and he kissed me passionately. I melted into his arms and ran my hand up the back of his neck. He pulled away slowly and looked into my eyes.
"Wanna go back to the house?"
I gulped. I knew it was coming. But I nodded. He kissed me and led me back to the car. We got back to his house and he grabbed 2 Coronas and 2 cigarettes.
"So are you planning on getting me drunk first?" I joked.
"Ha! You don't even know what I'm gonna do," he grinned and took a sip of his Corona. I shrugged and did the same then took a drag. He took my cigarette and put it out and placed my drink on the table. He started kissing me and I returned it, wrapping my arms around his neck. He lay down on top of me and began kissing down my neck and unbuttoning my top. He sat me up to where I was sitting facing him in his lap and slid my shirt off and he did the same with his. He was slightly toned. He ran on the treadmill and it was pretty obvious. I cupped the back of his neck and kissed the soft spot beneath his jaw bone. He made a very nice sound in his throat.
"Tell me something," he said, running a finger up my arm.
"Hmm?" I asked, still kissing his neck.
"Are you a virgin?"
I felt chills run up my spine and the memory of his soft whisper popped into my head. I looked up at him and nodded.
He smiled, "You sure seem to know what you're doing."
"I've been through the motions before," I smiled sensually. The hunger in his eyes grew and he pulled me closer to him, grinding our hips together briefly.
In that brief moment all of the sexual tension and confusion released itself and something happened that I partially regretted. I looked into his eyes about 10 minutes later, breathing heavily. He was doing the same. He kissed my forehead and rested his head on my shoulder.
"You ok?" he asked.
"Yeah," I said softly. "You?"
"Mmhmm," he responded tiredly. I couldn't believe what I had just done. I don't think he could either. A dream is one thing. Actually living the dream is another.
"We should get dressed and get the boys," I recommended.
"I'll get 'em. You can rest if you want."
"Ok," He kissed me again, got up off the couch and put his clothes back on. I did the same.
"You forgetting something?" I asked as he was about to slide his boxers back on
"What?" he looked down. "Oh." He was still wearing his condom.
I laughed. "I'm going to bed," I kissed him on the lips and grabbed my half empty bottle of Corona and headed up stairs. I lay down, my body aching with pleasure. I had a text message on my phone.
"Hello sweetheart. I just heard one of your songs on the radio. I couldn't stop thinking about you so call me when you get time. I love you."
It was from Luca. I had completely forgotten all about him. I lay back on the bed and tried not to start crying. I was gonna have to tell him. I was gonna have to face Adie sometime as well. I had gotten more than I had bargained for and it would only get worse.
"Well, you can play the shit out of it tomorrow night," Mike said, clapping him on the shoulder, which made him wince a little.
